I've seen so many people (including myself) wanting to go out and find books they're interested in for themselves and not because they've seen it recommended somewhere & I love it!! I'm so excited to find books I'm genuinely interested in without being persuaded by somebody else's thoughts on it ♥

So glad you met your booktube consistency goal because it means we got to watch all your vids throughout the year too hehe 💖 what you said about only reading books with some sort of buzz really resonated - I feel like for me it comes from the “always be optimizing” impulse that I’m trying to unlearn. Last year was my first year of Bookstagram and I found myself reading a lot of buzzy books and having a fine time, but overall was left wanting. This year, I want to follow my own tastes and more backlist and I’ve already had a great reading month!

What if you combine the goal of "finding favourite authors and reading backlists" with the goal of "reading books that aren't being talked about". For example, a lot of people are talking about Sula right now, but Toni Morrison has several other books that aren't being talked about as much. Then you can dip your toe into reading books that aren't being talked about as much, while still reading authors that you know are good or that at least you already like. I wouldn't worry about not being able to find other opinions because I've found even obscure local authors have at least a few reviews on goodreads :) And for what it's worth, I usually don't judge someone for liking a book that I thought was bad/dumb - especially if they're able to articulate WHY they liked it. It's fun to see books I've read from someone else's perspective that's different from mine. I'm sure most other readers feel similarly :)

i love that idea!! idk why i didn’t think about that, but thank you so much for sharing! the example of toni morrison you gave would work for perfect for me too because i have some of her books i’ve been meaning to read & one of them is actually one i haven’t heard too much about (god help the child)! i’ll have to sit & think of some authors i could do the same with. & it’s so funny because i also never feel that way when i hear other people’s thoughts on books i might not have liked/didn’t work for me. but for some reason, i get in my head about it when it comes to me! thanks again for your comment, i appreciate it!! 🥹❤️

love the goal of reading more backlist offers from authors you've loved. and rereading! I really feel you on the wrap-ups -- most daunting, but also useful. my ideas (for myself as well): quarterly wraps with shorter thoughts and/or monthly fav wraps where I only talk about a few books that really stuck out

Just found your channel 😊 ah we have a few reading goals in common! I like to discover underrated books (on booktube) by browsing my library, second hand book shops and I have this annual tradition with my bf where he buys 2 random books for me - usually books I’ve never heard of before but he thinks I’ll like them :) I‘m also so bad at revisiting authors I previously loved. I’m doing a project right now where I’m reading from authors I’ve given 4 or 5 stars to before, hopefully I’ll find more books to love (and maybe a video will come out of it😊)

That’s really interesting to hear about feeling intimidated with reading a book with no hype! I think it makes sense that there may be a combo of people pleasing and the comfort of a plethora of reviews! Esp in regards to if a book/author has any possible problematic things other people know about. When I see a book I don’t recognize my mind goes more to oh I’m out of the loop! Like I get nervous mentioning I haven’t heard of the book and someone being like “where have you BEEN” which is funny to think about bc I feel like I get that all the time with things outside of books and that doesn’t bother me at all 🤭

I absolutely LOVE when customers pick up books that I've never heard of and tell me they're just getting it because it caught their eye and sounded good to them! not to be dramatic but you're kind of cheating publishing when you do that and not just go off of what is being pushed in a store or what you see on booksta - those titles are chosen by marketing teams to really showcase not necessarily because they're amazing but because people think they're going to sell
