I really enjoyed and appreciated this review. Ryan remained objective about this car despite his affinity for Tesla. The action shots of driving were helpful to me in seeing how the car responds. I have not enjoyed my Tesla experience and am anxious to unload my 21 Model 3. This car is a definite contender.

I maintain the electric cars for a major rental car company for the rental car center at PHX. I’ve grown to dislike the Tesla 3, but enjoy every moment I get to spend in a Polestar 2. It feels more like a high performance car as opposed to a glorified golf cart with a tablet stuck to the dashboard.

Interestingly I've just had this car delivered in the UK. Yours shows 78Kwh battery and 335KW power. Mine ordered Feb 23 and delivered this week is 82Kwh and 350KW for the performance version (also with new front gille). It seems like you've got the old motors and old battery on your review car. The performance version here is: Range 342 - 367 miles (WLTP) Power 350 kW / 469 bhp Torque 740 Nm / 546 lbf-f 0 - 60 mph 4.0 sec Single motor WLTP is 406 miles

The refreshed Polestar 2 long range rear wheel drive has 406 mile range WLPT which beats most of it's rivals. The refreshed Tesla Model 3 has no indicator & wiper stalks which will put off some buyers. The Polestar 2 is also a hatchback which makes it more practical than the Model 3 sedan.

I appreciate your review as you understand that there is more to an EV than EV-specific metrics. Some reviewers say that one car is bad because it's not as efficient as a Tesla. That's like saying a BMW 5-series is worse than a Honda Accord because the Honda is more fuel efficient. There are more aspects to cars, whether an EV or ICE, and people have their own individual preferences and know what matters to them. Thanks for an interesting review!

  • @benjaminsmith2287

Yes. You got it right when you say Swedish company and offshoot of Volvo. So many people I read say Geely makes this car when they don't. (And by that I mean creates, not assemble in a factory, the car) Geely owns the company, Volvo, that makes this car, but they themselves do not make the car. The good thing about Geely is they've pretty much left Volvo alone and financed them to make Volvos, but a lot of people seem to think they've taken over Volvo which is not the case. At any rate, Volvo did design this Polestar. It's the Volvo Concept 40.2. Starting from the Polestar 3, those are Polestar designs (based on the Precept). However, Polestar and Volvo designs overlap and share. You're the type of Tesla owner/fan I like. You love what you do about Tesla but can appreciate qualities of other makes. This is a solid review. Per interior size, the Polestar 2 isn't built on a dedicated platform so it has some of the drawbacks of an ICE car. The 3 and 4 will be huge inside, at least for passengers.

Agree! The rear hatch is also a lot better for large boxes. The Pixel headlights with matrix functionality is awesome on dark roads! 360 camera is also something I wished my Model 3 had. Both are in the pilot pack upgrade, but even without the Pilot and Plus upgrades it's still a very good car imo. Btw, I'm 1.85 cm tall and managed to sit in the rear seats with 1-2 cm clearance above my head. The middle seat not so much though but not really an issue for me.

I have a Tesla Model 3 and I'm trading it for a Polestar 2 this year. It feels like an upgrade in most areas. The regular car aspect is appealing to me even though you get used to Tesla being an Ipad on wheels. Proper stalks for lights, blinkers and wipers, seat heating, mirrors, etc it a positive. I also prefer the normal door handles and such, and it has slightly more ground clearance. I like the plastic protection around the wheel arches and rockers (Tesla Model 3 has issues with paint chipping in those areas and also is a bit low on uneven surfaces). I'm sure there are some things I'll miss from Tesla like the Sentry mode and Dashcam, but overall this car seems better to me.

Hey Ryan, great review! I’ve been driving a Polestar 2 for two years and 98,000 kms in Canada and I only have good things to say. One thing that I appreciate versus the Model Y my wife owns is the accurate range it shows in the screen and the benefit of having Google maps which makes a big difference in choices of ways to get to places and accuracy in destinations. I know is subjective but the driving experience, the seats and quality perception is better with the Polestar. Charging at home is way slower! You may have missed the wiper fluid for the front lamps to show the Apple car for both screens. Cheers!

Interesting. When I test drovec the Polestar 2 (the previous version) I found both the rear doors and the rear occupant space very cramped. It also came oin these "packs" downunder which made things like a heatpump part of a $AU6K package. Things like the full driver assist were alsoin an optional pack. So it got quote expensive, quite quickly. The changes sound very positive.

When I was comparing this with a Model 3 earlier this year the most marked advantage of the Model 3 to me was space. The Polestar felt a lot more cramped (probably in no small part due to the smaller windows and huge C-pillar) and legroom in the back was objectively less, in spite of that low seating position of the Tesla. On the other hand, there's the hatchback utility of it, so both seem to have trade-offs. I actually got a Model Y in the end because the budget allowed for it. That budget still wouldn't have allowed for a similarly spec'ed Polestar by the way, which is something worth noting as well. On the plus-side, it seems they've made some real progress from their Volvo Infotainment-architecture. I used to have an XC60 and the digital dash/infotainment functions in that were clearly very much an afterthought. For example, to switch between views on the digital dash, you had to go into settings on the main screen. The only thing the "change-view"-button on the steering wheel did was change from your average speed or distance traveled to the average mileage of your trip.

The 2024 RWD model is definitely the smartest buy (which I now own) and not slow at all for a single motor model. As much as the Dual motor is awesome to drive, it's not worth paying that much more for quite a bit less range and a slower charging speed and I could never complain owning a RWD car with 361 ft-lb torque lol otherwise it's basically all the same anyway I love these perspectives from someone that mostly does reviews of one specific brand, it shows the open mindedness and appreciation for what's out there

Ryan totally agree about interior space. I recently was in one for an Uber. I am 6 feet tall and the in the rear seat it is very low and was very comfortable, I banged my head on the getting in as I was not aware. As well, I thought the interior materials and plastics were very cheap, I was not impressed...

I'm 1.85 cm tall and managed to sit in the rear seats with 1-2 cm clearance above my head. The middle seat not so much though but not really an issue for me. But I get it if you are taller in the back. I guess I am tall in the legs, not back.

The charge amperage is for home charging only. The app selection is great but you have a few music options like Spotify. There is also a KZread app which you have to set to the lower screen resolution to work. I wish that there was there was a drop down indicator for changing songs or whatever. It show the volume why not everything else. The gauge cluster doe not show estimated arrival time . The performance package should come with a awd to rwd eco mode!!

I drove a '21 P2 last year. Dunno what you heard, but the HK was very nice. As impressive as the Volvo S60, S90 and Saab 9.5 HK systems I previously had. Is it as sweet as my mix suite JBL LSR8328s? No, but it is a car stereo. BT is a limited bandwidth transmission. USB is considerably better. I played M4A from my phone as well as my server 1500 miles away. The only change I made was a dip in the mid freqs. But if one is looking to get 95db with exaggerated bottom, you can get that too. I listen at 85 no matter where I am. Except if it's AC/DC. I was in bumf'k and had no trouble finding L2 charge stations for free. L3 station$ took ~30m to go from 10% to 80%. L2 about 3 hrs. Home 110v about 8 hrs. It's a very nice car and comfy enough behind my 6' seat for another 6' human. Best part, passing a 55mph semi-tandem in a 2 lane 65mph zone at 85mph in 2 secs. Not only did my spouse giggle, but so did the road. The only thing I was a bit uncomfortable with was the tiny rear window, but I got used to it pretty quick. Tempting to buy or lease except for the way insurance companies bill for EVs in general. If only there was a Euro investor/owner for the NEVS.

Interesting, this picture is completely different in Canada. The Model 3 RWD Standard range price is 57K and the Polestar 2 RWD Long range is also the same price making the latter appealing especially with the lower interest rate with Polestar. I see a 3k discount with TM3 2023 for current inventory and no eta for the 2024 Highland. Both are illegible for a 12k discount in Quebec (after tax).

I have both. A Polestar 2 dual motor and a m3P. Tesla is still more fun to drive and quicker but the Polestar has won me over with the build quality, central display, a very good one at that with the ability to show even Apple's map in. Pilot assist, charging and software including the app, are no where as good as Tesla. All in all I like both . Did I mention build quality ?

So many good features, a really good blend of ICE controls with EV and a great review but lacks what I've heard as one of the biggest knocks against Polestars and that's the service network. I'm in NW Illinois and my closest service centers are in Detroit, Minneapolis or Columbus OH. Given Polestar has some set maintenance schedules that they want done at the service center and I don't believe they offer on-site like Tesla, this pretty much disqualifies it for me, as that makes for possibly multiple long road trips, just for service.

Excellent review, snappy and to the point! That being said, you didn’t discuss charging speeds, and only touched a little bit on the charging network, and the ability to charge at home at reasonable speeds. All of these fall short compared to Tesla and for this reason, I would not spend so much on polestar . Still one of the best competitors at this time. Tesla still wins.

Before I bought a MYLR I tried out the PS2. I loved it. But the Polestar 2 is not meant for people above 6ft tall. Every time I got into the PS2 I would bang my knee on the center console. The problem is so prolific that any PS sales associate you talk to will tell you that the center console is the most common compliant they hear. You can just search Polestar 2 knee pad and confirm what I've said. Also the price of the PS2 vs Tesla and the supercharger network just kills the value of buying a new PS. I still love the PS2 more than any Tesla but being 6ft makes this car impossible as a daily driver.

I'm the same height as you - I hired one for a week driving around New Zealand - I had no issues with the console or the room in the driver's seat - my home car is a BMW M140i so I like a smaller, rear wheel drive vehicle with good dynamics and a bit of power. I buy the car to be driven, not be my loungeroom on wheels.

I have a 2022 Polestar 2 and 2022 Model 3. Polestar has a smoother ride and I like the exterior look but I’ve had so many issues with the infotainment freezing/lagging and the vehicle not recognizing the keys or drivers. The polestar even drove without any keys and left me stranded! If the 2024 is anything like the 2022, I’d stay away.

I’ve rented a few Polestar II’s at Hertz and felt very cramped in driver’s seat due to console. Also, this massive console was very poor for storage. I’m not a fan of its old-school door handles. Increased range in this 2024 model is a big plus over the 2022 I was driving.

I wish it had been an option when I bought my Model 3… but I probably would have still bought the Model 3 - I can’t forget my business dealings in China and thus couldn’t justify the price given China’s low wages. not a big fan of voice commands especially when you are not alone. it requires you to interrupt who you are speaking to which is very rude. and when you are alone it requires you to interrupt your music which is also very annoying. so in the end i use it sporadically when i’m alone and not listening to music, radio or podcast
