omg never thought world championships would be held in my hometown, so happy! for people coming, please educate yourself on how to be a good tourist and respect our home!

I cant believe that "THEE" world championships are coming to my home! I'm literally screaming my head of! I'm just like... AHHHHH! I've been here my whole life, my family lineage has been here there whole lives! And I could have never thought that my favorite... No, My literal dream! Is coming right here! You know what, I better get ready, and I better train... Cause watch out Pokémon, The representative for Oahu, Hawaii is coming! (haha, but no seriously, cant wait to start my first season. while the well-wishes to those affected in lahaina are appreciated, you guys do know that honolulu is on a separate island right 😭😭 while i have complicated feelings on hosting events of this caliber in the islands, given the constant impact of tourism on the QOL of residents and kama‘aina, the 20 years of pokemon fan in me is still extremely excited! gl to those grinding out their entry requirements (also please donate to the maui food bank and other certified charities!)

@@ArceusDX Especially since that it's announced, it means they got permission to host. Similar to how they were able to have worlds at Japan this year when a year ago, the border was still closed to tourist at the time of announcement.

@@BJGvideos the hawaiian government (which is mainly ran by wealthy transplants, not the native ppl whose families have lived on the islands for centuries) is the one encouraging it bc they get paid from the rich businessmen on the mainland who run the hotels and events. let me break down the full scale of the problem how it works is companies run by businessmen who dont even live on the islands are allowed to buy up land which native hawaiians have lived on and cared for for centuries, force the natives off it (which often leads those natives they forced off to be homeless bc all other housing is either reserved for the wealthy tourists to rent or is occupied by ppl who keep moving to hawai'i from the mainland) and then build resorts which then allows them to receive money from a place they don't even live. on top of that the wealthy businessmen who own all the resorts have ways to get out of paying all the taxes they owe to the hawaiian government (which they already don't have to pay as much as the native population bc of the government giving tax cuts to encourage more wealthy people to come to hawai'i), so they don't even put all that much money back into the local economy like people claim they do. but the ones that do get paid are the wealthy transplants who run the government, because their salaries get paid first (and a lot of them steal the money that gets set aside for actual improvements in local infrastructure). on top of all that the wealthy people who move to hawai'i often end up leaving soon after (six months to a year, maybe a lil bit longer) because the tourism industry leads to shortages of clean water, a lot of pollution, overcrowding, and generally just an unpleasant atmosphere to live in long-term. this leaves the native people to do most of the work on the island cleaning up after careless tourists (either while working at resorts, hotels or other tourist traps for very little pay or literally having to clean up beaches, roads and forests for free just so that there isn't more pollution in the land where they live). hell, the amount of litter + the water getting used up by tourists + the heat of climate change drying everything out is part of what's encouraging the fires to spread in lahaina. if a native person is lucky enough to be able to afford to open a business they have to compete with large companies that move onto the island (big stores like walmart or target, restaurants like mcdonald's or burger king). native-owned businesses typically end up collapsing because they have to price their goods an services way higher than those big businesses do just to be able to break even, which leads to the tourists typically choosing to buy from the big companies instead of paying for the better-quality goods and services that natives have to offer (handmade jewelry, local food, handmade clothes, etc). this isn't even getting into the ways tourists can damage sacred spots that they're told not to go, disrespect the native people (native hawaiian woman get harrassed or assaulted at much higher rates, native hawaiians in geenre have higher rates of going missing, being murdered or physically assaulted than others on the island) or the ways they break things they don't own because they think of the islands like a giant playground. it's all of this that's leading the native hawaiians to protest tourism and big businesses on the islands, which they've been doing for years now (hell, they've been doing it since before the pandemic, which caused even more issues with tourists bringing in the virus....). the government is goin against the will of the people.

As a native Hawaiian (who also lives on Oahu), I never felt so endeared my entire life... *And yes, to any other native Hawaiians out there. (Mainly to those on Maui) You have my full condolences on your homeland's recovery.*

Hawaii needs all the love and support it needs right now and in the future moving forward. I know this was filmed before, but an announcement for an event like this can bring even a little bit of joy and happiness to people dealing with so much despair and loss.

Knowing event planning, they likely had this booked for over a year, the announcement of it was just unfortunate timing.

I’m so excited! I’m gonna start my first full Pokémon tcg season as a senior. This will also be my first worlds I’ll be attending if I get at least 450 cp. I hope to see you all there, and prayers for the people in Hawaii and I hope they recover before worlds starts.

The tournament is a YEAR from now, anything can happen in a year. Plus this was probably planned months or years advanced, they couldn’t possibly predict the disaster. You see if we think logically , we find answers.

Of course right as I move from Honolulu to do graduate school yall go there. Hahaha have fun and a hui ho!

This seems wildly irresponsible on the back of the Maui wildfires, which are already slated to be some of the deadliest fires in US history. We don't even know the full extent of the damage yet. To say nothing of the politics of Hawaiian tourism, which I won't speak on since I don't fully understand them, this announcement could've waited. (inb4 "maui is another island:" it's all hawaii. and just because its maui this year doesnt mean it wont be oahu or something else next year)
