We drove the new 2024 Kona 2.0 and 1.6T at our test track, and share our first impressions on the driving dynamics of the standard and turbo versions, redesigned infotainment system, and how it stacks up against its predecessor. How does it stack up against leaders in the subcompact SUV segment like the Subaru Crosstrek and Honda HR-V? Will the EV version fill the affordable electric car void? Later, we talk about why some driving positions feel "off", and the importance of a symmetrical driving position for a vehicle's driving comfort.

A year ago, I bought a new 2023 Kona SEL with the 147 HP engine and the CVT. It has all the power I have ever needed. I never notice the CVT that tons of reviewers dislike. It came in the very bright "Wave Blue" paint, so it's easy to find in the parking lot too. I'd get another one, too soon now though!

Unfortunately, the dealers are throwing on the extras at greatly inflated prices, making these vehicles much more expensive than they need to be.

I think it sucks that I've been paying for Consumer Reports for approximately 5 years and many other people have released video reviews on KZread test driving the Kona yet Consumer Reports released 2 videos just talking about what they "think" the Kona will be like.

17:41 that's so funny because my driving instructor was always telling me he wanted my hands at that exact position Mike is talking about, which is about 11 and 1 o'clock. But he also instructed me to not use my thumbs and to just "hang" my hands from the top of the wheel without wrapping my thumbs around the rim of the steering wheel. He was very specific about this. I've never driven that way though LOL.

The reason you see folks with both hands at the 12 O'clock position is because on a long road trip, it's an easy way to do a back and shoulder stretch without letting go of the wheel.

Glad to see Keith Barry back on the show! It looks like Hyundai left out glossy plastic panels from the interior. It’s about time that trend begin to fade! One thing I’d like to see from this channel (and publication), with respect to EV testing: in addition to EV range, please also discuss and publish observed efficiency. Miles/kWh or whatever metric, anything! If you publish observed mpg for Nissan 400Zs and Chevrolet Corvettes, then the least you could do is also publish EV efficiency.

I'm leasing my 2nd Kona (2019, 2022), both the Limited series. I enjoy my Kona VERY much and only issues have been the DCT and the infotainment (usually just the navigation) goes squirrely on occasion. I would consider another one when this lease is up (it would be a 2025 model) IF I could afford it. I may want to buy out my lease at the end of next year or lease another depending on interest rates and prices. I'm glad they got rid of the DCT but the same engines? The 1.6 Turbo is fun to drive but when I test drove the non-turbo, it was a dog.

UPDATE: Went to my dealership for an oil change; sat in a Kona Limited AWD (yellow? Yuck!) but I did prefer the look and feel of the interior (side mirror cameras! Ventilated Seats! Heated steering wheel! All standard with the Limited trim) OVER the cheap-looking interior of the Corolla Cross Hybrid, which I also sat inside and felt the seats were too narrow. Sorry Toyota, but your engineers went on the cheap and your hybrids don't even have a SPARE TIRE !? I'm getting a 2024/25 Kona Limited AWD in RED and keeping my loyalty with leasing Hyundai #5!

The hesitation off the line is the only real problem I have with my 2024 Kona Limited. I am honestly confused and would love to hear the Hyundai engineers reasoning for tuning it that way. Sometimes it takes over a second to even get moving, which I am not used to being a mostly EV driver. I love how high the car is and the AWD is fantastic. Great car, but seriously what the hell is up with the hesitation? 😅

instead of just a pure EV, which MOST people won't want.....Hyundai shoulda made a hybrid for this.....a gas model with 20ish MPG is weak and outdated for this size segment

AGREED. I CANNOT STAND a rectangle gage cluster and a round steering wheel. No one can see all the info and add being tall and part of the screen is useless. People may make fun of me for the analogue gage cluster but at least I can see everything.

Smaller is better when you have limited room in front of your house to park. Manufacturers keep trying to super size their vehicles and the smaller versions sell like hotcakes.

I found all 2012 GM seats miserable. WIDER PEOPLE !!! I am a big guy and many seats are too narrow and bolstered. IT IS AWFUL .....Car seats have become more bolstered and narrower (I think it is to keep occupants farther away from the door for crash testing) It has really compromised comfort for wider people.

Other reviewers I've *watched drive* the new 1.6T didn't complain about lag. Hyundai just held a launch event with nearly every auto journalists (except CR apparently). I think he's overstating it a bit. Of course you'll have a little turbo lag. Go watch for yourself. There is a hybrid in every other market. This was designed as a EV first then ICE added afterwards. TOYOTA by far has the worst information screen in the business. period! New Prius and EV have it. You can barely see through or over the wheel. #Awful
