2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition First Drive

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

GMC might have the ultimate midsize truck in America... For the moment, since we all know a new Tacoma is coming by the end of the year... While we wait for the new Taco and the Ranger Raptor the GMC and Chevy twins battle the Jeep Gladiator for top of the heap. With a standard 2.7L turbo, front and rear lockers and AEV upgrades like a winch capable front bumper, the Jeep has stiff competition. Which is right for you? Well, that depends on what you want in a truck..

Alex and Travis, Do you think it is odd that GM is investing so many resources in the Off Road pickup market yet completely ignoring the equivalent SUV space where Wrangler, 4Runner and Bronco are earning $Billions? 🤔

I don't think they're completely ignoring it (AT4 currently exists for the terrain, acadia, and Yukon) but if I had to guess I think they're trying to put their resources in the market that has more space. The products you mentioned are the gold standard, and it was a bold move for Ford to throw the Bronco in the ring, but imagine what it would take for GM to put something forward to take on the Wrangler. -Travis

@@AAutoBuyersGuide I would imagine one good look at Ford's Bronco profits would be sufficient inspiration for GM to get back in the ring.

The Ridgeline (and Trailsport) would have had a lot more difficulty completing this trail but you're spot on, it's not something most people will do. This package is not an inconsequential upgrade from a standard 4wd package, but if you liked the truck and didn't need the works you there are other options (like the standard AT4). -Travis

Thanks for comparing it with the Gladiator. I've been casually shopping for an off-road focused truck and I think the Gladiator and the Canyon/Colorado are my top choices if I decide to go midsize since I need an actually usable back seat. I wish you could get the GM engine in the Gladiator. It has so much more torque than the pentastar, and I'd be using it at high elevation so the turbo is a benefit too. One thing to keep in mind about the Gladiator Rubicon is that the base price doesn't include an automatic transmission or a hard top, both of which are $2k options. Of course Stellantis has a ton of cash on the hood of the remaining 2023s right now...

I just ordered one, so I can tell you that the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV MSRP is $55,895 + $10,100 = $65,995.00 for the base AEV edition + other options.

What's up with that antenna? What's wrong with the classic shark fin antenna? Will the truck even fit in a standard 7ft high garage with that?

Curious about headroom? Based on some videos it looks like a 6'4" guy would be brushing up against the headliner? I am actually 6'4"+1/4inch - often have headroom/comfort issues in smaller vehicles🤕😖!!

If this ends up being around $70K would it be unreasonable to consider the Rivian R1T ($73K+) as a competitor? It's highly capable offroad, is a midsize, and beats it in a bunch of metrics.

@@AAutoBuyersGuide I live in the snow belt. If I'm not changing over from snows to summer tires twice a year, then I'm rotating twice a year. I'm sorry, but I simply see no reason for 34"+ tires other than bragging rights. They are heavier, more expensive, reduce performance, increase stopping distance, reduce fuel economy, worsen ride due to increased unsprung weight, use up more space (because the spare can't fit in the normal location). All of those disadvantages for what? So you can climb over a curb at the mall?

Leaving aside an emotional purchase I'd still go with a full size F150 or GM Product over these incredibly overpriced mid sized offerings. So far no straight up Ranger attack against this tho unlike what Ford did with their Bronco versus Jeep. Glad demand for this and the Jeep offerings are still crazy amazing tho!
