2024 Gathering of Nations: Derek Mathews intertribal family meeting mirror speech

If you appreciate the video is condensed to only show what happened. Do a thumbs up.
At the 2024 Gathering of Nations powwow, Derek Mathews delivered a speech. This is the speech in its entirety including the silence at the end. He urged indigenous communities to engage in introspection, advising them to “look in the mirror” to uncover solutions to their challenges, particularly concerning his powwow.

As a member of the KIVA Club, we had been asking The Matthews to produce receipts of the scholarships they gave over the years and they refused to do so even though the scholarship was a criterion of their initial contract with UNM and why UNM gave them student organization pricing for use of the Arena (PIT). Their contract with UNM ended not because UNM was trying to steal money. It ended because UNM decided that since The Matthews did not want to produce receipts for these scholarships, UNM was no longer going to give them the student organization pricing. Therefore the new contract was as an outside contractor and The Matthews refused to pay that amount so The Matthews did not renew their contract with UNM.

This is false information. Kiva club never asked Gon anything. As matter of fact. The scholarship was never contingent on a contract. Also when gon place money from each year's event into the scholarship foundation held by the unm. Gon made recommendations to the unm foundation department to administer the awardees. Another fact. Gon received recommendations from the unm native American student services director each year. The awards in part were based upon those recommendations.

What dah, Northern Cree, get special recognition. What about some of the other drums? I'd like to know how that Drum tie was judged? How did Northern Cree get 2nd place when they weren't even in the Drum contest tie breaker? Also, this guy need to keep them bad thought's outta our circle. He even calls it a holy place, 'what is his problem and look in the mirror'. Why them arena directors and MC's let him talk like that in our circle? Who cares if he's one of the people that run this powwow. He ruined the powwow and needs to learn respect. Them head staff should've done something. SMH 😌 😌

Hmm… not sure who this guy is and judging by the response from the audience. Many were thinking the same. But yeah, the arena is not the place to vent social grievances.

His pow wow is expensive!! Right from parking to getting in the door, he makes natives pay and spend all they have.. that’s his scheme.. most pow wows run by real native people don’t charge like his does
