2024 Cybertruck First Look! | It's Quirky, But That's Probably OK

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

For the first time ever, Tesla finds themselves in an unusual situation wit the Cybertruck. They aren't first in this segment, and in many ways the Cybertruck lacks any kind of clear advantage. It's not the most efficient, nor the longest range, nor the fastest charging, or the option with the biggest cabin, biggest frunk, largest bed, etc. What it does have is style. Like it or not, the Cybertruck is about extremes, about style, and about the promise of rapid fire software updates. Oh, and then there's that charging thing...

    Amount of smudge marks at @6.57 makes the case for having actual buttons, at least for most used controls. One of the least appealing things on any Tesla, and some of the newer vehicles from other manufacturers

    There are lots of smudge marks…but they’re not well seen when driving the vehicle. I notice this typos thing typically, but in the 16 months I have had my M Y, the screen smudges haven’t bothered me once. I do keep a microfiber cloth in the center console and wipe them off once per week or so, but they haven’t been a problem. In fact, since there aren’t dozens of physical buttons, each with dust surrounding them, it’s way easier to clean with a few wipes of a cloth, instead of having to find a way to get in all of the nooks and crannies around actual buttons. It’s kind of like trying to clean a gas stovetop versus a clear glass electric or induction stove top. One has a thousand pieces and angles to get at, and the other is just a smooth piece of glass.

    I agree with you and timeout. It should have camera mirror, putting it in the screen is not as good. They are being cheap on a truck that costs 80 to 120 thousand dollars. I think they would have been better off with a more traditional truck with the things that actually make this truck interesting which are the 48 volt system, the steer by wire and the 4 wheel steering. I suspect the seats have to be closer together and away from the door because of how this truck is assembled. The seats and carpet are mounted to the battery pack, and then the whole thing is loaded into the vehicle from underneath. So the seats have to be able to clear the frame rails at the base of the door when they are being installed.

    After all the buzz and hype around the very unique design of the Tesla cyber truck, is it really useful as a work vehicle? Or is it really for those who are more into projecting a certain image of themselves? I’m still quite leery about the stainless steel external finish, as I have a sneaking suspicion that it is going to consume an enormous amount of time to keep looking good and what is it going to look like in two years time? One other point is that given the 5+ year development period for this vehicle, how the hell is it that FSD is nonfunctional after paying for it upfront.

    The cybertruck has less maintenance and easier to maintain than the lightning. Hepa filter is in the frunk and way easier to change out. Lithium ion 48v battery that lasts forever vs 12v lead acid on the lightning you have to change out every few years. And no more door dings on the cybertruck. The HFS has a higher pren than 316L marine grade steel , so you will never see rust from the steel except the rotors which are just like any other vehicle rotors that are made of cast iron.

    @@EVBuyersGuide Wes, lead Cybertruck engineer, said on X the alloy used on Cybertruck “has a PREN value higher than 316L "marine grade"”. So should owners be concerned about the panels rusting?

  • @EVBuyersGuide

    @EVBuyersGuide

    Ай бұрын

    @@ericy.2108 There are a TON of different stainless grades and Tesla won't give us specifics. I'd have to cut a piece off and put it in our SEM to do EDS and EBSD on it to say what it is, (we don't have a portable XFR right now), but they have said it's a 300 series stainless alloy. All stainless will "rust" over time as the chromium passivated layer can be chemically or mechanically removed exposing layers of the alloy where iron is nor well alloyed with the other elements. However in a practical sense corrosion is nothing more than a cosmetic worry. The Cybertruck may get rust spots if you live near the coast or in an area where you get salted roads, similarly to stainless steel silverware in a dishwasher occasionally getting small rust spots and pitting corrosion. Small rust spots, if they do occur and are not some kind of iron oxide blowing in the wind (or pollen) can easily be scrubbed off. Longevity wise, recycling is a greater concern for SS than corrosion. Also, the aluminum unibody structure will oxidize and fall apart long before the body panels will. This is the condensed version of the tale, we may or may not do a video on it as it's a niche topic. Long and short, stainless steel will get small dots of corrosion depending on the environmental conditions. This is especially likely along the edges of stainless sheets like at the edges of doors. I have seen limited evidence of this, but nothing easy to quantify as nobody has let us cut up their Cybertruck yet. Also: it should be expected and IMHO isn't a big deal. It's like buying a car with a matte paint job and being surprised it's harder to clean, etc.

    WOW, it looks so cheapy inside considering this is a $60,000 to $100,00 truck. Elon must be spending all his money on stainless steel. I expected something a bit more "luxury" inside, you know, something you want to be in. Imagine showing all your friends, they see the "cool" outside then show them the inside. It looks like a prototype that was rushed to market without much thought. I didn't really want one before, but after seeing it more, I definitely don't want one.

Especially something as simple as wiping down a touch screen. This is an archival video that will be viewed maybe for years and years. It's really not that hard to spend a few seconds making things presentable and to try to make a product (your videos) a little better.
