Interestingly I’ve gone the other way - having owned an S1000XR since they first came out, I’ve moved to a 1300GS. Loved my XR, but the engine loved to rev and much of the enjoyment came at speeds beyond the legal limit. While the GS can be very quick, it doesn’t need to revved hard to be enjoyed.

I have a 23S 1000 XR never really noticed excessive vibrations. You know you’re right the motorcycle it’s in line for that does rev pretty nicely, but nothing uncomfortable or bothersome on long rides. That in-line for is just amazing. Nothing beats an in-line for for sound and pure enjoyment of the ride is an amazing bike and all the bikes are owned. It’s my favorite.

I completely agree with your observation about in line 4s, and is the reason I bought one, and also have a Z900RS… Now, the original exhaust sound on this S1000XR does not do justice to the engine (thanks Euro 5!!!) so that’s an adjustment needed right away (check pro-race). For long trips, I also recommend changing the visor (check MRA). These small adjustments go a long way in making it an almost perfect bike (there will never be such a thing as a perfect bike 😂)

You should try Yamahas CP4 flat plane crank engine (R1 or MT10), the sound of that is something else when it’s been decatted.

Rode one of these back to back with the gs in 2022. Overall ergonomics were vaguely similar but don't let the basic physical appearance fool you. The gs has a more relaxed riding position and feels less busy while riding. The additional horse power doesn't mean much to an old gent like me.

In 2023 I was sure to pre-order the MXR, but then the final version was announced by BMW and it turned out that there are 5 things missing, which are definitely a deal breaker to me. As soon as it stops raining here, I'll consider getting the 2024 (or the 2025) SXR (M Package) with those nifty new rims and the 200mm rear tyres on them.

Nice initial review Andy. I’ve got a 2022 XR and must be one of the few who doesn’t have a complaint about either the vibes or the seat. Came from an r1250r and it really put some excitement back in my biking. Not really much choice in this sector other than the Multistrada and the Suzuki GX so think I’ll be ordering another XR.

Nice bike and excellent review, as ever. I have to say though, I'm very happy with my 'GS for the road' - my '22 R1250RS. The fabulous shift-cam engine is plenty quick enough for me. She is relatively economical, as well as being all day comfortable two-up, and fully loaded. I don't see me going back to an inline 4, and definitely wouldn't swap the shaft drive for a chain.

"if you're not going to go off road why would you buy a GS?" It's a similar question that those who hate SUVs ask. In reality the GS is a terrible off road bike for all but the most capable riders. Both the GS and XR have always been road bikes - the GS prioritises comfort and two up ability and the XR prioritises performance. They're both great bikes, I look forward to buying a second hand one in 10 years!!

You can easily take the GS off-road in Europe and US as there’s many flattish dual-track and un-made roads to have a go at. Probably include Cumbria in that. For the average UK green lane I’d think there are more suitable bikes available.

On the subject of the GS never going off road & consequently the ridicule the GS rider sometimes gets? what about the the sports bike rider with race leathers & the hump backed jacket who never go on the track? The bottom line is you pay for what you like & like what you’ve got, everyone to their own. But I do like the new s1000XR. I test rode one a couple of years ago & the seat was a killer, looks like that’s been sorted out. Great review as always. Thanks.

As someone who considered both bikes I can tell you why I ended up with the 1300GS: -seat height. I have a 31” inseam and with the adaptive ride height and low seat get the GS down to an 800mm seat height. Considerably lower than the XR -weight distribution. The weight on the XR is higher than on the GS, and pulling it off the side stand makes it feel heavier than the GS. -vibrations. It’s still a vibey engine, certainly compared to the smoothness of the GS. -power. I just don’t need more power than the 1300GS, and the extra 25hp are up high in a place where I seldom tend to go. I’ll take the torque. -looks. Sorry, the GS is better looking to my eyes. The small front wheel with the tall bike looks awkward to me. -having said all this is, if I was a sport rider looking for comfort, then the XR would be very appealing. Good review, thank you.

Great review, thanks! I rode the RS1250SE last week (absolute fantastic) then the GS1300 (smooth-as-silk ride but clunky quickshifter and engine braking). I tried the S1000XR 3 days ago and I’m still exhilarated by it. Incidentally, the quickshifter is sublime even 1st-2nd gear. My plans for long-distance European holidays have been put back by a couple of years, so I’m going for the thrill of the S1000XR for the next year or two. All three bikes are fantastic - horses for courses, as they say.

I had a 2017 s1000XR and truly loved riding it. The only down side was not really getting the full potential of that motor. Almost impossible to be in the +7k rev range without breaking every speed limit in 3rd gear. I moved to a GS. More suited to my cruising style now and opens up a few gravel roads to venture down. Perfect world would be to have both.

I love the styling of the machine, perfect for me being 6 foot 3 I just feel in proportion with the bike and also very comfortable. I ride a MT09 SP and love the immediate pull when you twist the throttle. Something this bike lacks when I test rode it. You need to properly wind it up before you feel the full power and the theatre of noise which is superb. The GS has the benefit of the torque and having immediate usable power when you need it and also it’s shaft driven which is better for touring.

The GS feels too good. Too polished. It does everything and in a way I felt it was taking away from the riding experience. My dealer called it a bit soulless. With the XR I have to work more. Plan more. And have the Jekyll/Hyde option. I also feel the road much better because of the lack of a telelever suspension. Much more fun for my purposes.

Thinking that since the beginning I have looked at getting an XR and always opted for something different thinking it is time to get the XR and see if that was what I was supposed to have purchased the entire time. Hmmmm

Came from an 1200rs to an XR and Im very happy to have done so. The inline 4 engine with super elastic gearing and a smooth quick shifter is a total grin compared to the tractor like, short geared, awful quick shifter of the boxer engine. I hated the sound so much I could only ride with ear plugs.

It's not just chain maintenance. Shaft drive removes the bother of rear wheel alignment, which I have found to be a pain in the chopper, on both belt and chain drive motorcycles. Shaft drive deletes all that misery, for a small loss of power through the drivetrain on a vehicle that already is blessed with an excess of power to weight.

Another great review. There is a lot to like about this bike. For me the GS would be the one I would pick. At 64 the lower center of gravity is a +. The other thing I look for in a touring bike is the range. Most of the riders I know on 1 liter sport touring bikes start looking for a gas station at 150 miles. Having a 200+ range gives more choices when planning my trips. I live in the Western US, and I have done trips where you need at least 200 miles of range. That being said I would love to see how the XR compares to the new Suzuki GSX-1000GX+. They both have a similar style with a more upright sitting position.

Chain drive, so not for me. I've had a few 4 cyl BMW as loan bikes whilst my own bike has been in for servicing and I just don't like the engine characteristics; they are too "busy" for me 5,000 RPM at 70 MPH? The continuous drone from the exhaust at similar speeds was quite tiring, the previous models were quite vibey too. Yes the power comes in with a whoosh at higher revs, probably great on track, but too frantic for me on the road.

Flipping epic. I'm 54 and I grew up on sports bikes, including bikes that would now be considered sports tourers. I can't stand ADV style bikes, and whilst I've had bikes with V twin, parallel twin and triple, there is something about an angry 4 cylinder that is addictive, although you do have to be going quite rapidly. What is it with GS owners and shaft drive? It’s heavy (and more unsprung weight), has more driveline lash, sucks up more power than a chain, if it has an issue or fails on a trip you’re screwed and the maintenance on modern chains is next to nothing. There’s a good reason there are so few shaft drive bikes nowadays.
