2024 Asus Zephyrus G16 Ultimate Review! RTX 4090 10+ Game Benchmarks! 240 hz OLED Display Test!

Ойындар

Here is my detailed review of the 2024 Zephyrus G16 with RTX 4090 (115-125W), QHD+ OLED 240 hz, Ultra 9 with 32 GB of RAM. I am very excited to check out the new CNC milled aluminum chassis and test out the OLED display. I am also very curious about thermal performance given the new thinner design. If you want to check prices, here's some links where the G16 can be bought: go.magik.ly/ml/20t0t/

I see the CPU temp is around 80-85c in this video, but I heard of people with the G16 having their CPU temp over 100c just from idling. Is this a serious issue? Does it have to do with the tri fans versus the vapor chamber cooling setups?

it would be cool to see your g16 4090 tests with 175 watts of cast vbios from scar 16 2024 (do not forget to do an undervolt, put a limit of 150 watts in afterburner and similar things) Furthermore, try to change liquid metal to kryosheet, it also would be very interesting tho I saw on the Reddit who that turned such, but I would like to see everything in video format

This is a review unit from Asus, so I don't think they want me flashing the VBios (I have done this before, but on the Scar 15 2021, I think). Maybe if it was my own laptop. It can be hard to trust reddit posts sometimes--they may not be monitoring temps/actual wattage/boost clocks, etc. If you swapped in the 175W vbios, you'd probably just run into thermal throttling non-stop somewhere around the 130-150W range, even with max fans. Also, a 60W boost to the GPU would help performance, but it would also put the VRMs at risk if looking for long term use, imo. A good way to fry the motherboard potentially.

Great review! Do you think 60 fps locked games will have good motion without motion blur in game settings on this display? And could you try Ark Survival Ascended too as it's one of the most demanding games out of there? First question is important to me so if you can answer it would be awesome for me deciding whether I would buy one or skip for other models. I just want a good motion clarity on 60 fps content. OLED panels seem to have lowest response times so I thought getting one would serve me good.

Even though it had fast response times on 240hz, image was getting pretty blurry under 75 fps or something. So I thought I had to get an OLED laptop to solve this motion clarity issue with how game feels at 60 fps because of having near instant response times.

in my testing, setting the display mode to optimus increased my cpu time spy score to 12500+ best time spy score so far- overall- 17053 gpu- 18088 cpu- 12880 there seems to be an issue where optimus is increasing cpu performance. this performance increase was very dependent on settings and I was using Ghelper to stop asus services which seemed to have an impact on cpu performance. putting it in optimus, making sure gsync is full screen only, using g helper to stop asus services, seems to give the best performance. any variation of these settings seems to cut the cpu score in time spy from 12500ish to 11500ish. also did a 150/250 overclock on the gpu and that score was with cpu boost on efficient aggressive.

@@coreyhunter5404 alright, do you think this machine is worth getting for oled panel? In my country this is the only oled model that is advertised as gaming and equipped with pretty decent cooling hardware and I am really sick of lcd motion when playing games (everything becomes blurry especially with low fps) but does not provide top notch performance levels. Furthermore, did you encounter any QC issues that Asus has been going through last year like famous coil whine or dead pixels on the screen? One last question or wish if you can call it, can you try limiting your fps to 60 in helldrivers and disable motion blur in game settings then tell me the smoothness of motion you get? In theory motion should look as crisp as static image when you are not moving your camera as oled panels do have near instant response times. I've tried DS: Remastered (60 FPS) on Asus Vivobook OLED and it was amazing. Not sure about this panel though so I need a confirmation.

@AkaruIez if you're looking for essentially an ultrabook that can play any game with a beautiful screen, this is the computer to get, in my opinion. It does get hot, but it works within the thermal limits of the components. With this much power in such a thin laptop, you're going to get heat, but it seems managed well. The 4080 and 4090 versions have a different cooling system that gets rid of the 3rd fan for a vapor chamber, so keep that in mind. I haven't noticed any QC issues with my unit, but asus is a large company, and people don't tend to post about how perfect their machine is. From looking around before buying, it appears every company has QC issues haha. But no coil whine or dead pixels that I can tell. I did set the screen to 60hz and helldivers to 60fps and it still looks amazing. I'm not a fan of motion blur myself, but I'm also not too picky, so take that into account. I imagine most oled screens should perform the same, but I'm not sure.

If you disabled motion blur in game settings and still getting amazing motion clarity at 60 fps that's just too good to pass, I'd drop performance for good motion in my most played games any day of the week. I guess I'll go for 4090 one too as it has best thermals as you said, I hope I don't regret my purchase as I pretty much regretted getting a 4090 Legion since it was poorly optimized for 60hz content.

It's for people that need to carry their laptop around with them every day to class/around the office/house. If you don't have to move your laptop constantly, I'd recommend getting a full power RTX 4080/4090 if possible. At least this Zephyrus G16 also undercuts some of the other premium laptops such as the Blade 16 and Alienware X16 R2--so that helps make up for the lower power limit GPU as well, in terms of price to performance. Thicker = cheaper = more powerful, but is a lot less portable for someone who can't be bothered with a 9-12 lb carry weight (with power adapter/cable)--and who might want to carry a smaller backpack with books/papers/etc, which requires a thinner laptop like this one.

I disagree. The G16 is still very big. In fact, it is just that they don't want to engineer more into it. Look at the Razer Blade 16 and Legion 9 they are kinda the same dimensions, yet pack a full powered 4080/4090. The 4060 and 4070 is still a scam imo, even after so long, Nvidia still hasn't bothered to uncap the 100w limits on those, yet their performance is at best 10% more than their predecessor, but commanding a huge price hike. But who knows, it might be a small bump in performance either way. MSI Stealth 18 is advertised with a 150w 4080/4090. And that pc is slimmer. How come Asus is not at least put it at that wattage?

There were bound to be compromises made to make a laptop thin and light in terms of performance. One really important consideration is that the speakers are really good. They are almost as good as the Macbook Pro 16, which are considered the best speakers that you can get on a laptop. The big thing that I think needs to happen is that Intel needs to step up its game on CPU efficiency. The performance per watt is really bad - and that is reflected in the battery life of Windows laptops.

No. If money is not an issue, the Razer Blade is still the best thin and light gaming laptop. The G14 & G16 will thermal throttle very fast during gaming and not to forget it has soldered RAM so you have to choose the 32GB option. Its basically a Creator's laptop masquerading as a Gaming laptop.

@@fardrives Not only that, mid-tier specs in the RB16 will outperform the top-end G16 b/c Asus put pretty underpowered components into this laptop. It works great as an "ultra portable" thin and light, but a 95W 4090 and i9 Ultra card will perform noticeably worse than a full powered 4080 and an i9 14900HX.

@@fardrives The Razer also has big issues with throttling. The issue I don't trust with Razer is long-term reliability. They've had some high profile failures in the past.

The problem with these ultra thin laptops are when it comes to gaming they will thermal throttle very fast. This is basically a Creator's laptop disguised as a Gaming laptop.

A 4060/4070 with 32GB would have been perfect. Asus locking the 32GB to the 4080 (at least in the US) is such a scummy sales tactic.

Eh for a $3000 gaming machine, mediocrity at gaming and low'ish brightness is not acceptable. I'd look at a full power TDP option, this feels like a luxury portable notebook for light business/work tasks. Maybe next years revision will be worthy of the ROG branding.

Imagine all the flexing by the YT community if Apple released a new gen Mac with CPU worse than the previous year! Of course, it is everyones fav, Intel, that year-after-year have mediocre performance gains and gets a way with it. Glad Apple did their own thing and revolutionised chips. Intel has closed a bit but this year is a sabbatical and probably not a good year to upgrade despite over-positive reviews. Especially with the price increases; it is at a point where Macs are now competitive with Windows premium machines when comparing as a pro machine.

Tbh I think they botched this year's G14/16, like instead of a powerful productivity/gaming laptop it suddenly became what the Dell XPS Ultrabooks should be at(don't get me started with that). Seems like theyre trying to beat the Macbook Pro lineup. It's sad to see 120W on a 4090 which is like a 3060 with Dynamic Boost but then only 20W away from a 4050/60/70 100W voltage limit. Or maybe I just love the '23 Zephyrus G16 (i9,4060,QHD) that I bought last year idk.

Man you're exaggrating, it's not 3060 with max power. It's fairly bit of better than 4070 mobile and a bit of behind 4080 mobile.

RTX 3060 average Timespy GPU score is 8200. RTX 4090 at 115-125W (Zephyrus G16 2024): 17,068 As you can see, the 4090 in the Zephyrus G16 is literally double the performance of what you are claiming.

My bad! Maybe comparing it to a 3060 was exaggerating it. I was just referring to the *slight wattage difference between the RTX offerings on this model.

DO NOT get this laptop if your MAIN reason is to game. It WILL thermal throttle, it WILL have a lot of endurance issues for gaming. Soldered RAM means you HAVE to get 32GB of RAM. If you're casually gaming but more focued on real world applications this is a good laptop.
