2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV / Righting Wrongs

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV combines old and trustworthy components with modern tech to make for an SUV that's just as competitive as the RAV4 Prime or Sante FE Plug-in hybrid, however you can also buy one without traveling, joining an indefinite waitlist, or selling your soul. I think it could be compelling enough to pull people away from traditional suvs/wagons like the Subaru Outback, Toyota Venza, honda CR-V and many more. I'll need it for longer to determine that (are you reading this, mitsu?).

Thanks for the review! -- I bought my 2023 Outlander PHEV (SEL Premium) 10 weeks ago - local dealer (Columbus, Ohio - USA) had 7 Outlander PHEVs on the lot. I got mine for $1,200 UNDER MSRP and the dealer gave me $31,500 for my 2018 Acura TLX -- I paid $18,000 plus tax for the Outlander. I have driven 2150 miles - have used 27 gallons of gas total (79 MPGe). I am plugging it in every night for my daily commute and weekend errands. I have taken 2 road trips of 300 miles round trip each; got 37 “mpg” using “Normal” hybrid mode for these trips. It feels "luxurious" inside -- premium leather, panoramic roof, 360 camera, power folding side mirrors, heated steering wheel, heated front AND rear seats, hands-free tailgate, head up display, Bose speakers AND massaging front seats! If I take a longer drive, I will have no "range anxiety." Plus, the Outlander has a 10-YEAR WARRANTY. ONE BIG NOTE: the owner's manual clearly states that the 3rd row is ONLY for people under 5' 3." I do not need a 3rd row, so I "tri-fold" it. This opens up a HUGE, DEEP storage well. And, I can stack duffel bag items on the folded 3rd row! The RAV4 Prime may have better overall mpg, but the 18-month wait and $12,000 "dealer adjustment" are outrageous. One local dealer wanted $65k for loaded Prime with MSRP of $52k. I did not consider Kia or Hyundai brands -- "Kia boys" have stolen 3,000 of them in my area (and assaulted drivers in the process). This is a real issue. Lastly, my home solar panels will be installed in 2 weeks. I got a level 2 charger in my garage 3 weeks ago. The Outlander PHEV is the PERFECT choice for me in 2023. Final note: 2 local dealers now have 20 Outlander PHEVs on their lots with reduced financing deals and added discounts off MSRP. Availability, luxury, value and price -- a great vehicle to "step into" electrification!

Back of the 3rd row seats folded on top of the seats which are on top of the floor. I stack the duffle bags on top of the "ledge" this creates. Note: I turned off the rear seat warning detector since no people "sit" in the 3rd row@@histyler

"legs, or self respect" nice In all seriousness, I think this is gonna be my next ride. Either get a year end deal on a 23 or perhaps hold out for a 24 (I have a lease that expires in Sept 24 but I can buy it out anytime). Very impressed by this and while it's sort of a unicorn, it is exactly what the doctor ordered for me (rarely need to drive more than 50-60 km at a time, but often have a lot of gear and need the space of a bigger SUV). Add on the fact that you actually procure one, pretty damn great.

I've had my 2023 Outlander PHEV GT for 5 months now. Never have I received less than 75 kms per charge and usually 84 kms per charge. This includes a combination of city and highway driving. EPA is far too low ball in their estimates as they did not familiarize the tester with the full use of the car functions. Also on Normal mode I get 6.4 litres per 100 kms. But there are so many different methods to receive high fuel economy with this car that the reviewers can't evaluate when having the car for a short time. Highway driving over 80 kph will use more battery power but when decelerating at speed on an off ramp the regeneration using the advanced cruise control with the one pedal driving or simply the one pedal driving recoups battery power exponentially. I have received as high as 104 kms on a single charge by driving very conservatively with very light pedal use from 0 kph, one pedal mode and ACC. Phenominal. Try that in a Rav 4 - not possible as I've tried. The most a Rav 4 will get is 66 kms - exactly what EPA says. Not this car. Much better. My car came with Nexen Roadian tires which gives 5/5 rolling resistance - the best available currently. Don't understand how Australian Mitsubishi towing allows 3600 lbs while in NA only 1500 lbs. Beyond sense. I understand battery replacement under warranty will take place if below 67% but very unlikely due to the liquid cooling and heating in winter of the battery pack. This is one fabulous car and it is NOT a Nissan. Chassis is 60% Nissan with some lengthening and complete interior redesign but complete ICE, electric power train and electronics are Mitsubishi. Superb warranty - best in the business. My only regret is that I didnt get the GT Premium but spouse didn't like the colour. She loves the front end as do I. As far as the third row is concerned it can accomodate short adults and children simply by using intelligence when managing the front and mid seating. But this is not a third row vehicle but a 5+2. This car has a powerful heat pump for heating and cooling - far superior to that of Kia and Hyundai where the ICE is always in demand for heating and cooling. Only the Rav 4 has a weaker heat pump by comparison. Buy this car and be amazed!

I actually use the 3rd row for tailgating as you can adjust the back part to become the bottom part to where you can sit on it. You’d be sitting on the headrest but it’s actually pretty comfortable

@keyner111 Mitsubishi are the only car manufacturer who has the rights to patent for direct drive PHEV. Mitsubishi PHEV ICE matted with a generator that transfers power to the battery to power the electric motors. Just like a Pure EV. All other phev's on the market uses transmission to transfer power, so ICE has to be running constantly. Mitsubishi ICE only runs when the battery requires charging, hence why it does use more fuel on long journeys but its more efficient in town driving and also technical more reliable due to less mechanical components.

That's cool. It's a good thing we have choices. That said, have you ever driven an EV? The difference is much more than just how you fuel it up. Ignoring any environmental pros and cons (fossil fuels vs rare earth elements), the driving performance of an EV (and this car in particular) has been mind blowing for me. The silent ride, the instant torque, and the added weight (which is balanced out by that torque) make for a very pleasant driving experience. If you're a cheapskate, once you see and experience the impact of regenerative braking, you really start to get a sense of how much of that expensive fuel you're putting into your car (whether it's gas, diesel, electricity or propane) is discarded into the air as heat when you slow down. I'll personally never buy another ICE powered car.
