SL55 AMG REVIEW IS OUT!

BMW 8Series M850i (V8 Twin Turbo) XDrive with 523BHP costs 105K USD and 115K for the convertible. M8 Competition with 617 BHP is 135K USD. What the hell is Mercedes thinking on setting that price for a 4 cylinder.

to get money out of ignorant individuals....they would come up an extra $30k minimum for each sale. Selling 10 of these gives them 300k profit. Selling 30 of these gives them almost a million dollar profit..

No one who has an 8 series really likes an 8 series. Both cars are status symbols, but ppl do like sl cars. Plus, they aren't competition

I love this model. Because it’s only RWD available. Seems like a classic, fun roadster. The best of the bunch if you ask me. Maybe the engine should’ve at least been a 6 cyl.

Perhaps with a tune and some exhaust upgrades, it will be a lot more exciting. That 4 cylinder has great tuning potential, but for the price you may as well get the SL55 with a nice V8 rumble.

£30,000 extra for a rumble is an awful lot of money. I don’t care how many cylinders it’s got. It’s a nice looking car and 185 mile an hour from a 2 L engine is no slouch

Looks great. I owned a 2012 Z4 for a while with the 4 cylinder engine and it was plenty for fun cruising in a sexy car with the top down. 0-60 in any car under 6 seconds is pretty quick to do so safely. This is a beautiful, refined, quick car.

Only way im buying a 4 cyl SL is if it revs to like 8000, otherwise I see no distinguishing characteristics even if it is the engine from the A45

Well, not everyone can afford the other two models. The fact they are getting that hp out of a 4 banger is brilliant. Of course, we would like a stronger engine, but if all you can swing is fore this, go for it.

@The Weekender I have considered that. The SL interior is what is getting me. I own a Mini and the interior of the M40i is very similar.

It´s a great Roadster! I am not worried about the engine. Dont´t forget: It still has round about 400 hp (381 + 14 electrified turbo boost), runs in 4,9 sec. to 100 km/h and goes up to 275 km/h topspeed! That should be more than enough power for 90 % of the rest of the cars on the street. And at least: It ist a Mercedes Benz SL AMG!🙂

This dude must be a hundred years old.

I just looked at one yesterday, the sticker price here in Massachusetts was $115k for a 2023.

Wow, I knew about them, I just never thought anyone had actually bought one. I would never.

i dont think there fake. they just go off in the cats! i have a cla 35 and it use to sound like that till i cut the res and muffler off. Its really loud now.

My SL 63 is glorious.

The recorded audio doesn't really do the engine sound justice. I've driven one without the piped in audio and it really sounds exotic and awesome. Just could be louder.

It is a SL 300 with AMG badge.

Ich glaube dass der Wagen ein Getriebe Problem hat. Du sagst ja selbst, dass die Übergänge von 1 auf 2 nicht sauber sind. Auch beim Launch rutscht die Kupplung, was Du als „kicks in“ bezeichnest. Irgendwas stimmt da nicht.

Great review 👍It's a great looking car for sure, but the sound is really disappointing for an AMG (I presume the new C63S sounds like this too which is a shame...).

@@Moscarblog Ah that is a shame. The C63 should have an angry V8 growl, 4 cylinder doesn't suite it in my opinion.

To be fair it doesn't sound like a 4 cylinder, it has more of an fart-ish sound, quite a crap package for an Amg, 😢

Looks quite nice. Don't see the point of reintroducing useless back 'seats', which counter the reduction in weight of the fabric hood. Personally would much prefer not only a straight two seater but also a retractable hard roof. Plenty of power from the I4 for this type of car. However, sounds awful, and needs a 6 cylinder, IMO. Also, pops and bangs don't suit a gentleperson's GT. I'm 59yo and just because one day you find yourself older desn't mean you no longer know anything about cars and don't want a nice sounding engine. Why buy a car like this if you don't care much about cars? All older people were young once, and all young people will hopefully reach old age. That said; what most older people don't want is excesssively loud and unrefined sounds or annoying pops and bangs coming from their exhausts, particularly when they are fake. IMO, it was a mistake to transition the SL to an AMG model, to get rid of the hard roof, and to add useless back seats. In so doing, Mercedes alienated most previous customers, and the prices of the new SL range also excludes most previous customers, even those who may not care that much about the powertrain in the base SL43 model. As far as the jerkiness of the gear shifting between first and second, it's a characteristic of dual clutch transmissions, and this seems to be particularly badly programmed. Anyway, I'd now choose a base 911 C2/C4 Cabrio over this. The AMG SLs seem aimed at a largely different demographic than the previous Benz SLs.

Thank you for your great comment! I would 100% recommend getting the SL55 or upwards. The V8 just has that more luxurious feeling and that stronger masculine sound. A 911 Base Model is also a perfect alternative to this. You can basically turn the pops and bangs off by switching off the exhaust button, when switched off you will have nothing pumped in. @@acjohn6995 Where is this 4-seat insurance thing an actual reality? Insurance is based on risks, so your driving record and age mainly determines your risk of an accident, combined with where you live/drive, which is part of the risk of an accident equation, but is mainly a risk of theft, which combines with where it is stored overnight (and some models of car are much more likely to be targeted for organized theft than others). On top of that it's how much the car is worth and how much it costs to repair. The new SL is approximately twice the price of the previous SL. And then there's that soft-top, which is a greater risk of theft. Also, consider the average age and occupations of the typical SL buyer, certainly of the previous generation. So, no, generally speaking, it's not an insurance thing.

Cool Review, cool car and luxus too. I think it is too expensive you can get a 2.5 5 cylinder in a 75k Cupra Formentor VZ5 with 390 ps (hp). But it looks in the interior so good i love the design

The pops and bangs are really coming from the engine. The Engine Sound gets only enhanced. It's the answer of the car manufacturers to do something against the US/EU/RestOfWorld regulations, that cars have to get more quiet on the outside...

The car is very nice. However I feel for $110,000 USD it should have an inline 6 or V6.

As a 61 year old man, I was surprised to be told that people my age (50-60 ) accept less from my £100K+ just want cruisers and don't care about performance? Pretty ageist comment I think! For the record people my age grew up driving cars that if you braked hard on a bend you might kill yourself. Cars had no 'driving aids' to compensate for crap driving as they do now and we grew up actually having to drive cars rather than the cars driving for you as they do now. This is very visible when on the road nowadays and seeing all these 'racing driver' young guys (and gals) who very obviously don't have a clue how their cars work and are totally reliant on abs and stability control etc. They're only going fast and not falling off the road because the onboard electronic systems are a lot more intelligent than they are! As a Merc cabriolet V6 driver, I wouldn't put this kind of money out on a four cylinder although it's got quite a bit more power than my current V6- that is an age thing! I like V6's and the snarl they produce but there's no denying a V8 sounds great. But in many models the extra power/£ isn't worth it, specially in the Merc range up to 2020 which is where I buy. With a background in the motor industry I'd never buy new, that's for mugs and the obscenely wealthy. Fewer comments about age, sex, orientation etc please? At 61 years I've learned that we're all different, all unique and all entitled to live the life we choose as long as we don't hurt anybody- and old guys don't just cruise!

Don’t underestimate the knowledge of old men. Some of us drove and still drive very fast sport cars.

I‘m 100% not underestimating old people. Most supercar owners I know are obviously old. But there‘s a certain group of old people that just bought a 100.000€ Plus SL 450 in 2018 and those are the people targetted for this

I seriously can’t believe they put that engine in that car. I wouldn’t touch it, they did the same stupid thing on the C series cars. If they wanted to go there, create a car not AMG and sell it for less by Mercedes. Years ago they sold the heck out of S class but today they get a fraction of those numbers. They started to build all these different models that all look the same. The A and C cars are junk, and sell 7 different SUVs? I got sick of dash lights coming on that cost 500 bucks a shot to turn off. O and let’s talk about resale? If you have any of those over 100k don’t plan on driving it, you get nothing for them.

My Golf R 8 also 2lt is bigger, faster , less hp and sounds better. Why?!

Total waste of space and resources by Mercedes. A 4-cylinder doesn't go into everything.

Poor review. You shifted it manually the entire review so we know nothing about how the transmission behaves. You said its for cruising but never let us see it cruise or corner and never mentioned how it rides and handles at all.

The cruising aspect would be to boring to include in the Video. Stuff like cruising I test outside the Video and tell you about it in the video. I shifted manually because the Auto transmission isn‘t the best behaving in this car. I‘m sorry that you weren‘t satisfied and I will take your criticism and try to improve. Thanks for watching

My father just bought this car for the exact reason you mentioned, he’s 78 and doesn’t want to deal with a V8 anymore or the gas expenses. I tried to talk him out of it but the $50k price savings was nice too
