I also got this set besides the new recycle truck. I also don't like how there's that one row of studs on the front. I might modify so the arms for the bucket/forklift arms forward and give it better headlights and taillights. But yeah,when was the last time Lego did a Construction stand alone set? It's been ages. Even with the nick picks of this one. I had to have it and did enjoy building it.

The only thing in recent memory is maybe the mining & demolition. But I would consider them to be separate themes from Construction. It was an enjoyable build though, but definitely needs some mods if you're planning to keep it long term

I already modded mine quite a bit. I didn't like that 4 stud wide front bumper either, so I shifted everything stacked together above that level, one stud forward. I raised the front one stud higher, which allows the front loader bucket to lay flat on the surface. In the back I gave the backhoe vertical rigger lifts to stabilize it. Also, added a 2x3 bucket for the back. Regarding the forklift attachment, I made it wider as it I thought it looked too small(it can still lift the seating area as I brought the seating legs one stud in on each side). Last, I gave the front hood a smoke stack with an angled piece pointing downward. For a later time I might also mod the roof lighting and add side mirrors.

To be exact, the last time LEGO did a stand alone backhoe, was back in '92 with set 6662. Set 6686 was the original back in '84!
