Amazing that you found your way back after all that - sometimes we have to just take the journey even if we come back home in the end. Got my first Leica (the M6) this past May and I’ve never looked back. Feels so good when you find the camera for you (and can finally get it!)

Swapping through many cameras to find ur self is normal. I did it too this year and once u cleared up that doubt in ur heart, u have piece and can fully concentrate on creating. That feeling of missing out on something is real and clearing up that feeling is even better.

Leica M cameras are an enigma. They have so many limitations compared to something “normal” like the Sony A7RV with much the same sensor as the M11, yet Leicas are so much fun to use in spite of all their antiquities, we just keep going back to them. Happy New Year, Matt!

Happy new year Matt and congratulations for the book to come. It is useably a painstaking work of love. [By the way, for the few I have seen: interesting compositions, great tonality (better than your project in the paper mill, if I can get some feed back on that (tone and composition seem to have taken a second role given the circumstances and probably stress).) I am also mostly a 35 mm user: I found and unobtrusive 35 f 1.5 (size of my summicron and almost same max aperture as a summilux) that is now constantly on my M10 mono [Ican send you a few tests I did at f 1.5). As you I have kept my M6 (bought used in 1989 ;o), but with the rising price of film and the difficulty I have now to find my favorite developer (Kodak X-Tol) I am not really using it. Added that to the fact that I would have to scan mines as a 17" wide printer has replaced my wet darkroom (more convenient, more flexible, demanding less of my time (setting up and cleaning)) and frankly with today's baryta papers I defy anyone to tell me which is which 2 feet away! All the best for the next year.

Matt, love this video. You’re showing mature growth as a creator and photographer. I’ve gone through a similar journey with my kit and have learned to only buy gear that’s funded by the sell of my existing gear. I’ve settled on the M system as well, after shooting Fujifilm for nearly 10 years, with the LUMIX S5II and now my new Nikon Zf rounding out my kit. All of these cameras share my Voigtlander M Ultron and APO lenses. Autofocus is just not my thing. I almost always have two cameras with me; one with a wide angle lens, and one with a medium telephoto. A favorite lens on one camera is not an issue! Currently, I always carry the Leica Q, and either a 90mm f2.0 summicron on the camera du jour, or a 70-200 f2.8 if needed for an event. The 90 is butter. Although I am a strong believer of composing in the frame, I can’t wait to upgrade to the Q3 and occasionally take advantage of post cropping.

Thanks for sharing the Leica Journey, it is helpful to hear about your experience and learnings!. I am a 35 guy as well, it's a versatile middle ground for 28/50. I got back into street photography this year, and the zone focusing on 28 and wider views to get more in with blind shooting was a "new discovery" for me. With the M11 sensor, cropping in is an option, so I did order the 28 cron with close focus, we shall see how long the novelty wears off. My thought is it can turn this into a M11Q, which adds versatility as an everyday carry. All the best for 2024!

It takes discipline to stick with a simple setup. It's so tempting to try new things. The problem for documentary work is that it becomes inconsistent. I shoot nikon. 24mm, 135mm, and sometimes a 50mm. I shoot tri-x pushed to 800. I develop in Rodinal. That's it. No more gear ...

“Liked!” I enjoy your “rambling.” Please do produce more rambling. 🙂 Happy New Year @ 2024! Yes, it does make sense to have more than one lens, in one’s favored focal length(s). I have a Leitz 3.5cm f/3.5 Summaron, a Leica Elmarit-R 35mm E55, a Zeiss Distagon 35mm f/1.4 ZM, a Voigtlander Color Skopar 35mm f/2.5 II, and, finally, a “Re-Edition” Steel Rim Summilux-M 35mm, acquired in that order. The latest one probably will put the summaron and Color Skopar out of business, but, lenses do not eat much, so, there is no hurry to send any of them down the road. For what it is worth, a budget way to have close-focus with a 35mm Leica lens is to acquire a M-Adapter-R, and the version of the Leica-R 35mm Elmarit, the one with the E55 filter threads and sliding hood, which officially spec’s as focusing to 0.3m, but which actually focuses as close as ~0.2m. (If I am mis-remembering details, I will soon add a reply to correct myself.)

  • @rexgigout1472

    @rexgigout1472

Well, another reason to keep the Summaron or Color Skopar is because they were very inexpensive, and are both tiny, so can be used in riskier situations, with less anxiety, rather than taking the Re-Edition Steel rim where angels fear to tread.

I don't regularly get rid of old camera gear, so I still have a bunch of Nikon film and digital bodies and lenses. I also have a bunch of digicams. I feel the lens thing, I used to shoot exclusively 50mm over the past 2 or so years. I explored an 85mm f/2 on my FM2 and was pleasantly surprised. I ended up keeping the lens, and now have tried a 35mm, and recently the 80-200 zoom. I've found myself shooting in that 80-100 bracket almost all the time now. I think there is a stigma around whether or not to shoot with a single lens in the community, and I used to be one of those people. The 80-200 hands down is the best decision I've made in a long time. So yea don't be afraid to explore more focal lengths.

I still use my Leica M8 as my digital Leica M, mostly with a Minolta 40mm M-Rokkor, sometimes with the Leica Elmarit 28 mm Asph. I was several times thinking about to update, but why, do I really need more than 10 Megapixel... Try to keep your Leica M11 for ten years as I did with my M8!

I have always wondered how the Fujifilm xpro3 compares as a more affordable but similar experience to the M system and whether these systems are good all rounders for both personal work and client work. Thanks for always putting out great videos Matt they always are a joy to watch! Happy New years! May this coming year be a good one for you and the family!

They may look similar, but the experience is quite different. I’ve used many Fuji cameras (incl. all versions of the X-Pro) and they’re great cameras and certainly make more fun than i.e. a Sony. However, the X-Pro line is basically an X-T with an off-centre viewfinder. The only similarity with a Leica M is the OVF, but compared to an M10 or M11 the X-Pro OVF is really mediocre and the MF experience is far worse. The upside of the X-Pro is that it’s a nice retro looking camera with great flexibility. It can do everything an X-T3 can, but with better looks. The M requires you to dedicate yourself to it. You need to learn to shoot with an M and many people just can’t afford that dedication. The IQ of an X-Pro is very nice and for most people more than enough. But when I print the images of my M10-R with a 50-Lux, there’s no comparison. Just…wow…

I literally just sold all of my gear (Sony A7R5 and Q2M) to finance an M11 P and a 50mm Summilux ASPH. With old eyes and shaky hands, this camera will be a challenge, but that is what I want. Watching your channel has certainly been a part of that process. I’m looking forward to what the new year brings. Any hints, tips, or techniques you have for the M cameras would make for a great video. Especially for a newb like me. Happy New Year.

If this is your first rangfinder, try sticking around middle apertures to maximize your hit rate, especially with a 50mm. If your eyes aren’t what they use to be, there are some great rangefinder photographers who “feel” where the focus range is by the feel of the placement of the knob or focus ring. F8 with focus distances at 3ft, 5ft, or 10ft, and you’re there.

HNY…! Love the Leica Ms, my film ones and my M8 & 240… my favourite lenses are the 40 2.0 and the old 35 2 (VII/III). Mainly use them but also others sometimes, got a full range from 21 mm to 135mm, whereas the 75 summarit has surprised me a lot. But if I hit the streets it’s mostly the 35 2 on a camera and the 75 2.5 or 90 2 in the bag. The 40mm I love with hp5!

Thx for sharing your thoughts. I have not yet bought a Leica... but I worked my way through Nikon to Fuji APS-C (XT20, XPro3), then Fuji GFX and finally the Hasselblad X1D and X2D medium format cameras. That said, I picked up a Minolta XE5 a while ago and my digital cameras were used less and less. I finally sold my X2D and lenses and then again before a trip to Turkey, I decided to get a Fuji X camera again -- I ended up with the fastest version, an XH2S. It is technically great, the 26MP are plenty enough, and I like the output but I do not enjoy the process that much. The AF-C nails it and with up to 40 frames a second (crazy!). Cannot wait for my Minolta to come back from repair... a part broke on a trip to China. *sigh*. So I guess it is part of the creative process to explore -- and since it is my hobby and not my job, it is "ok" to lose some money on the way. Happy new Year and all the best for your book project!

M11M + Lux 35 is an awesome > $15000 combo : 🌵/ Not many of us can afford it unfortunately. Few years ago I sold my M 240 for a A7RIII. It was my worst photographic experience ! Currently I shoot M262 (my third M) + 28 F/2.8 + 50 F/1.4 for 95% of my pictures ; more and more in B&W. M is not a dream camera for everybody. However in Ukraine “be safe” means stay at home during curfew and run to a bomb shelter as soon as you hear an air raid siren in the middle of the night. Russians just launched yet another drone and missile attack on Ukraine and many people won’t live to see 2024. Stay safe!

Happy New Year, Matt. What you describe is imo the real benefit of Leica. The ability to switch systems and adapt lenses, while always getting great results. I’m a professional fashion/beauty photographer, based in Switzerland and a few years ago I sold all my different cameras and lenses and bought the SL2 and SL2-S to complement my personal M7 and M10-R. I use the SL2s for professional work and even those ‘workhorse’ cameras give me more fun than all the previous brands I used. I can easily adapt my gorgeous 75 Lux-M or my 90 APO-M or use a Q2 monochrome. All have a similar menu and button lay-out and all give that great IQ. I now have a limited set of cameras and lenses, but I can combine them based on the needs for a shoot, my personal mood or whether its personal or commercial work. We host frequent workshops in our studio and experience first hand how much gear people carry around and how that affects their abilities to free up their minds and ‘focus’ on photography rather than contemplating and discussing gear. Everyone should try it once: one camera, one lens for one year. It helps advancing your photography.
