A super days racing from the GTSA club. After lots of water had been put on the track in the days leading up to the meeting, the racing conditions were almost perfect. The meeting kicked off with the 250cc Solo class, and after the heats and with so many winners, the final looked absolutely wide open. The fast starting Tim Greig did battle with Russell Little, Luke Harris, Richie Knight, Charlie Wood, Karl Bedingfield, Austin Riches, and Hayden Watts, but who would come out on top in a terrific final?
The 500cc Solo's was run on a round robin basis with the top 10 point scorers going into the final. Charlie Powell had looked the class act in the heats, but could Arran Butcher, Alfie Bowtell, Chad Wirtzfeld, or local favourite Martyn Sturgeon spoil the Powell party?
In the 350cc Solo's, Cameron Taylor was a class apart, and surely nobody could stop him from taking victory in this class, not even the experience of Paul Hurry.
The GT140 class saw some of the closest racing of the day, with Kevin Gwillam doing battle with arch rivals Ian Clark, Mark Scopes, Wayne Broadhurst, and Steve Newsham, but with improving riders Max Broadhurst, and Luke Wicks also putting up some great performances through the heats, we were all set for a cracking final, and it didn't disappoint.
Three riders stood out in the Upright Solo's, Jason Prynne, Tim Mount, and Tim Curnock, closely followed by Mike Dowling, Martin Adams, and Brian Winslow. The wide riding Prynne was certainly the fastest in the field, but could he beat the much tighter riding of Mount and Curnock?
Some absolutely fantastic action all through the heats in the LH Sidecars, with British Champions Michael & Tim Phillips looking unstable in their first couple of races, but with Martin Cuff/Colin Clark always looking fast, and both Josh Penfold/Dan Woodbridge, and Tommy Penfold/William Naden also looking quick in the heats, with only 6 places in the final, which 6 crews would fight out the final? The Holland crew are improving in leaps and bounds, as are the crew of Danny & Harry Hill. The action was certainly fierce through the heats, and the final was one not to be missed.
Last of all was the 1000cc RH Sidecars, and they rarely let themselves down, and they certainly didn't here. As at most meetings, the crew of Mark Cossar/Gareth Williams are always the crew to beat, but there are some fast improving crews now. Matt Fumarola/Andi Wilson are right back to their best, Michael Austin/Vinny Branch are improving at a rate of knots, as are Dale & Jordan Fish. Former Masters Champion Paul Whitelam with Richard Webb in the chair rarely miss the finals, but the crew that is on everyone's lips right now, is that of Terry Saunters (former passenger to Rob Wilson), and in the chair for this meeting, Carl Pugh. Swapping with Mark Cossar through the heats the fastest time of the day, could Saunters pull off his first victory over multi British Masters Champion Cossar? Not something many have achieved. In a final that had the crowd screaming, we were treated to something that those who were there, will not forget in a hurry, and what a way to end a fantastic days racing.
