You should utilize the stationary elevated engine idle control feature. No one should be at idle speed for 30 minutes. Elevated idle will improve air conditioner and alternator charging performance, improve oil pressure, and reduce soot build up in the engine. It's also useful for cooling the engine after pulling heavy loads. Ford has made this feature available to ambulance builders for decades for the reasons I just mentioned. Using elevated idle negates the 30 minute timer you mentioned

we got a 19 powerstroke at work that had a 5 minute idle timer and the only way to keep it idling was to hit the break pedal but if it was regening it would interrupt and start over again but it would never fully regen.

My dad bought a 2022 f350 dually. He put 50k miles in one year and I can say it has had absolutely no problems whatsoever. Thank you though for reminding me why I don't want a diesel I don't drive enough to keep it happy

I just took delivery of a 2024 F350 SRW Platnium Tremor HO. The 30 minute idle now can be switched off. It resets after each start, it also will automatically start idling higher “800-900 RPM” after 5-10 minutes of idle. I live in Texas as a home builder, this truck will for sure see some idle time. I also have the Pro Power option with generator mode so maybe that’s why. I got the truck to tow an RV, if the idle becomes a problem it will likely have some part fall off.

That’s why I love having a mechanical key in my XLT. Never shuts off

My company car escape is the same way, even though it’s a hybrid. You can void it by hitting “ok” at 29:50. It will idle indefinitely after that.

Set parking brake and high idle should still work with 23s

I have a 2017 f250, it has the same idle timer. If I turn on high idle it will run until I turn it off. I often sleep in the for work and I haven’t had any problems since I started using high idle. I live and work in the south so with 90° nights at 100% humidity I’m not sleeping in that truck without the Ac on.

You gotta go get them to program in operator commanded regen so you can do it yourself..unless you already have. I had this enabled until I deleted mine at 30k miles.

Hello, you should look into Archoil fuel additive or Maxmiler from Pittsburgh Power. I drive a T680 with a PACCAR and run the Maxmiler no emission problems. Keep up the great videos.

I’m sure the idle limit can be shut off one way or another. Regardless, its an extreme inconvenience for a hotshot truck.

I would love it if you tried a F450. Better radius turns etc. I am still a Cummins guy but have been eyeing a Ford F450 for ages

Do you have the Aux switches? If so hook up a resistor for high idle to Aux 6. The resistor determines the RPM. 1200 or so is a good high idle that keeps heat in the cab in winter and should cut down on some of the plugging up issues. BD Diesel makes a selectable knob high idle switch as well. Not sure if they have one for the 23s yet but I’m sure they will soon.

I believe the epa might have something to do with the whole idle scenario even 10 wheelers are the same

My 22 HO Cummins gets to 25% and does a regen whenever I hook to a trailer even if I don’t pull it just seems the trailer plug makes it think it’s pulling

I wouldn’t worry about it. They aren’t actually fully clogged until over 150-200%. These new trucks actually have a fuel injector in the exhaust to burn off the soot. Allows much better regens without having the engine run at high rpm and dumping fuel in the cylinders on the exhaust stroke. Much better setup on these trucks in terms of emissions equipment

I had the dealer completely shut down the idle timer on my 22. I would assume the 23 would be the same. You can also shut down auto regen in the settings so you can control when it runs.

Not sure if it's the same but on my 18 F150 powerstroke a timer comes on the gage cluster screen warning me that my trucks going to shut down in 30 seconds and I can press OK to keep on idling. If I know I'm going to be idling for a long time there's a setting in the gauge cluster screen under Settings> Advanced Settings> Vehicle> Auto Engine off which I can uncheck to keep idling

I have a 2021 F450 platinum powerstroke and at about 30-35 a message pops up on the gauge cluster asking you if you want to override auto shutdown. You push “ok” on the steering wheel and it will run forever.

Small gas generator in the back, a A/c is cheaper to run at stops than idling your main engine .

i had no idea this was a problem. my 22 450 hasn't had one message or anything come up about the dpf. i've got 16k on it now, probably because it stays at a lot higher rpm for longer durations and the tendency of me flooring it may help it clear out

There is a way to turn that option off, at least my 2020 does have it but you have to do it after every restart I found mine on instrument cluster in settings

I wonder if setting your cruise will disable that, such as running a PTO

what's the consensus on letting a new diesel with all the dpf, def crap on it, idle intentionally 2 to 5 minutes in order to let the turbo "COOL" down when the truck has been worked.. Seems like a good practice.

My 19 ram HO stayed at 0% til 70k miles til i deleted the truck . Everytime i check it was 0%. Idk maybe i miss it when it went up. But regardless soot will build up in ur intake elbow n grid heater. Ram reccomends cleaning egr system every 60k n maybe sooner if you dont pull heavy with it.

If you do a lot of 10-15 minute driving, you bought the wrong truck. In forescan you can delete that idle timer. If you use the PTO high idle mode it doesn’t trigger the timer. You have to set up the mode to an outfitter switch. Either way no modern diesel should be left to idle. ALWAYS high idle

Forescan works on 23’s just ask Aaron at Powerstroke Tech. He’s on KZread.

I mean if you read the manual you'd know Ford clearly states that at 29 minutes idling it would do a 60 second countdown to shut off the truck. Overriding it is simple. Once it pops up just click dismiss shut down and it goes for another 30 minutes. As long as you hit ok the vehicle will stay running 😊

Dumb feature. Stuck in a blizzard on the oilfield and can’t get any sleep got to wake up every 30 minutes to make sure I don’t freeze

the question is Is the dpf really getting that packed that fast or does the computer want you to think that it is? L5P idles for 45 min. if the key fob is in the truck 15min. if its in your pocket, there is a $200 high idle switch that solves that but nobody orders it

Idle timer can be turned off in FDRS.

30 minutes is the standard idle time for all of Sync 4 equipped vehicles, like yours. Including gassers.

Somebody else asked the same question but I’ll ask the same thing in a more “technician” type of way. As a diesel technician, I typically see DPFs that just need a good regen cycle but for some reason 17+ Fords seem to have the biggest issue with idle & clogging. Do we think the sensor itself could just be getting coated excessively causing the high readings? Or is the computer simply “guessing” almost like a switch that runs @ a threshold and once it hits that threshold it triggers a “dummy light”?

It’s not clogged up. It will regen on its own once it gets to a certain percentage. The previous generation trucks didn’t have the exhaust filter gauge. Idling any of these diesel trucks with emissions for extended amounts of time is not good. Just drive it!

Put it in neutral and apply the emergency brake should override the 30 minute shut off. Just guessing.

Proof will be when it's working for a living.

@@1hasbeen531 you’re correct. A lot of the older guys buy these trucks and baby them. That’s the worst thing you can do with these new trucks. Work the truck hard and you won’t have emission issues.

What about keeping in neutral with p brake engaged? It might circumvent the time. Also in commercial applications you can get the certified clean idle, can this be done on more personally equipped trucks

They already make a/c units that run off 12/24v meant to keep the cab cool overnight so I dont see why this won't be a possibility. My point is, knowing how troublesome idling these engines are, maybe it would be a good idea if the manufactures would make an APU option wether fuel or battery. Thanks for your info, in any case.

Does the engine even rev high enough for all of the exhaust gases and soot to work through properly? I feel like that 10 speed keeps the RPM's too low. Not sure of your gear ratio either but I don't think it would make a significant difference with a 10 speed.

Run Adf 600 oil in it with a fuel catalyst & your regens will stop.

All modern trucks seam disappointing. I think the 15-19 Powerstroke deleted or a 15-18 ram is about the best you’ll get for a reliable solid truck. My 17 deleted powerstroke has been a beast. Just an f250 I’ve treated like a 450. Deleted and have only had to change manifolds in 179k needs U-joints in front end now. Other than that. Just run rotella t4 summer t6 winter. Truck just goes

my 18 ram 3500 reg cab dually has had a few electrical problems in 30k . x2 wire harness rub through and shorts and hcu for abs . I am on 2nd one and that one is bad cant get one till sept.Just ordered a 2023 f350 reg cab dually hope ford is better!

My stock 22 ram SO had 28k in the first year i dont think ive ever seen the gauge go up but i have an hr drive to work 4-5 days a week both ways and half is all highway. No issues yet fingers crossed i do tow the horse trailer a couple times a month sometimes more wait and seee i guess

completely normal what your seeing regarding the DPF filter....every diesel has been doing this for past 10 years, Ford just got transparent and showed people whats been going on behind the scenes.

If you don’t tow often with these new diesels the omissions will kill it. They gotta get hot.

They simply make the idle timer 30 min max on all vehicles unless you select to keep it going at 29minutes or leave it in N, also I'd bet there is a delete option if you look in the computer because the cab chassis trucks don't have it

No modern diesel does well with long idles and short trips. This video is an example of what happens when folks buy a diesel but don’t drive them like a diesel. When used as intended with 20K on the hitch and foot to the floor driving on a regular basis you won’t have problems with the DPF.

Ford has a forced regen function for this reason. There more sooty than Cummins at idle.

I can't imagine idling a DPF equipped truck for 5 minutes, let alone 30. I live 150 miles from the Arctic Circle and use an 800-fill down sleeping bag when I need to take a rest. I stay warm, and the DPFs on all my diesels have been trouble-free. I don't idle to warm up, and I don't idle because I'm a pussy and my toes might get cold. If the truck is not under load, the truck is shut off. No issues with the DPFs

Need higher rpm cruising around town .. doing 45 sitting at 1050 rpm is no good thanks to 10speed transgender

Don’t understand what the whole big deal is when idling. You don’t get soot when idling. You get soot when fast heavy throttling.

My understanding is the truck (engine) does not create enough heat when idling to burn off any soot in the filter. When pulling loads, they create more heat and don’t clog filters as soon.

Well maybe it’s the 3 motors that he had rebuild or get a whole new motor for his 22s RAMs. They all have issues. There isn’t a vehicle made that doesn’t break.
