2023 Dacia Sandero Review: Still a bargain at £14k?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

When the latest version of the Dacia Sandero first went on sale in the UK at the end of 2020, prices started from £7,999. Fast forward to 2023, and a combination of changes to the model lineup and a series of price adjustments mean the Sandero range currently now starts from £13,795. That's an increase of 72%, and might cause you to look at the Sandero in a different light.
In this video, CarGurus UK editor Chris Knapman takes a fresh look at Dacia's supermini to see if it's worth its higher asking price, while at the same time looking at the logo updates made for the 2023 model year.
With prices of rival models also have risen over the same period, the Sandero is still among the UK's cheapest new cars. But is it still good value?

The CarGurus verdict
The Sandero has always been a popular car, and this latest one improves things in every single area. It’s better to drive, cheaper to run, better built, and is available with more luxury equipment. It also delivers those classic Dacia trademarks of having loads of space for a laughably small price.
Chuck in the fact that the previous car’s slightly goofy appearance has been replaced by sharp lines and coherent details, and it even looks the part. Granted, cheap doesn’t always equate to value, but in the Sandero’s case, it most definitely does, and to astounding effect.
Pros
Very cheap to buy
Roomy and practical cabin
Affordable to fuel and insure
Cons
Modest safety standards
Stingy list of standard kit
Basic fit and finish

Having owned one for the last year I would recommend anyone looking to buy a new car of this size and price range (and above come to that) to test drive one. I am very pleased with mine and think they make alot of sense. Maybe others will be pleasantly surprised too. Given the generous equipment on offer including A/C, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, reversing camera and sensors, LED dipped headlights, keyless locking/unlocking and more, it offers tremendous value and with nice touches of a leather feeling steering wheel, chrome (plastic) and cloth inserts together with precise steering and gearbox, it doesn't feel cheap. It's good to drive and whilst the 1.0 999cc 3 cylinder turbo engine does not have immense outright performance, the low down torque and smoothness of the engine together with the light kerb weight makes it feel surprisingly lively and enjoyable down a B road. I don't think you can compare any new car with a secondhand one as on value, the secondhand one will usually win, but if you are looking for a new generously equipped car, with proven Renault mechanicals that comes with the peace of mind of a 3 year warranty that can be extended until the car is 6 years old for as little as £420 then very worth consideration. Also unless Dacia have changed it, the spare wheel option is a full size 15 inch wheel with a tyre fitted that has a speed rating above the maximum speed of the car. It is not a space saver/restricted to 50mph. The biggest criticism I have is the tyre/road noise which is due to the lack of noise insulation. It's not horrendously intrusive but is the area that creates most noise. The standard Sandero (non stepway) are fitted with very good premium tyres, Bridgestone Turanza T005, Auto Express Winners no less so there is nothing cheap here. Mine (non stepway) has a 6 speed gearbox. It is a shame if they have changed this to a 5 speed in the latest changes. Still a lot of value in this brand and car in my opinion

Just bought mine 2 weeks ago automatic 1.0 expression, cost just over £16,000, traded in a 7 year old low mileage skoda for £6500 so worked out less than £10,000 for a brand new car. So far im delighted with it drives nicely and all these negative points that have been mentioned i never even noticed. I only travel about 5000 miles a year and this car will do nicely for a few years. A no brainer to buy for me a good value for money car.

CarSnobs UK. What else can you get as good as this car £15.5K I don't know what car genos expect for the price, Soft touch plastics and then pay an extra 5k for something no one will ever touch again apart from once in the showroom. Soft touch and chrome bits only really costs a few hundred pounds in manufacturing terms but put them in a car with a heavily marketed badge made for snobs add 5K to the asking price and the average car gerno will love it. That's why the Sandero is the second best selling car in Europe. They are not for car snobs, as over there they just take a car for what its meant for, to do get you to you destination in some form of comfort and as cheaply as possible and screw what your neighbours think as they wont care one bit anyway..

I'm honestly quite miffed at all the reviewers that keep banging on about the price no longer being "cheap and cheerfull". Oh really? What competition does Dacia have with the level of comfort and options that are available for the price?! What? Price is still a major factor and Dacia is still the the champion of price-comfort.

Had our new Stepway Prestige over a year, had no issues whatsoever. This was the top of the range in white and ordered Jan 22. Price was £14,500. Crazy over £16,500 just a year later. I laughed when in the video the expression Sandero is almost the same price. The top of the range Stepway is a lot more comfortable than those lower down the range.

'Cheap and Cheerful' no longer but an honest review. I guess it is up to individuals to decide whether they want a basic, not as refined car or pay a bit more and get some refinement. It may all come down to what purchasers can afford but I find that cheaper cars are usually not looked after as well by owners after a couple of years; maintenance and servicing is often overlooked as interest wanes so the value for a second owner is often not there.

For future I wonder how easy would it be to remove that screen and put something aftermarket in. Seems like it is placed in a great position to do so if it can be unscrewed and just taken out and replaced, which would be great for people who would buy the car used later on, to replace the screen with better and more responsive tech. Seems like a great placement to add a screen also with a dashcam built in (if it does not have it already) in future but maybe it is not that easy to remove it?

I bought a new stepway 11 months ago - cheapest new, sizeable, auto I could find in Ireland (we are penalised by VRT so it was €24k+). The swift has a tiny boot. The problem is that a 2 year old alternative (kia eg) will not be much off its own new price given the state of the market at moment. Also for new - the next car up - say the clio is 32k auto - that's > 30% more. Some people just want a car to get around.

I agree with you that this car range has now lost the value brand image especially as this newer model has crept up in price by thousands in only a short time. Despite the tech updates and features if you examine it closer the safety equipment is way behind other brands as reflected in ncap score and as you say the overall fit and finish is cheap in some areas. Dacia is going the same way as Skoda has recently, yes improved cars and put in latest gadgets to attract a younger clientele but at what cost? They used to be the vw group value arm but at todays prices not sure how they see themselves and Dacia appear to be on the same path with the Renault Group.I still, have a sales brochure for the sandero stepway model from 2013 and the top of the range Laureate with the diesel engine was £10795 on the road. Yes its 10 years ago but if Dacia keep having price increases the equivalent model to that one will have almost doubled in cost.

Citing a price 'increase' of 72% is more than a tad disingenuous, for comparing the past and present Sandero base model is like comparing an apple and an orange. In addition, all car manufacturers have been leapfrogging their prices over each other in the past three years, meaning that their prices can look steep or reasonable compared to others, simply dependent on the point in time you look. Review this Sandero again in 6 months and the price might look much more reasonable.

Given the loss of 6 speed and the price rises 3 year warranty it has lost its key value selling point might be a better buy nearly new, in fact an older 6 speed dual fuel is probably the way to go for a lower cost quite new car. The Suzuki Swift is a lot more appealing as a new car with the longer warranty just the 5 gears holds it back a little.

Iv just ordered one after my ford cmax decided its time to die, now this was the cheapest option and unfortunately need to wait 2 weeks to get the bottom range as was the fastest option (not happy at all with it but couldnt wait for sept for the better version) a few things i noticed after buying and watching the videos and looking on the comparisons is the lack of fog lights ? this should be standard in all cars tbh, the media system and back cameras i can just install myself so not to much issue ( finance be dammed) and ofc the manual back windows (what are we cavemen lol) should all be automatic especially since most the time ppl will use backseats for kids. i wanted the duel fuel but had to yet again settle with petrol (massive step down from diesel) but 3 years and can get shot of it and upgrade i guess ill deal with it. id say if you can wait and go for a sandero get the better version or like myself be stuck with a disapointing car with lack of what would be saftey options, iv paid to get reversing sensors installed.

I think this review is a bit unfair. The swift is miles behind the sandero in terms of quality, when you compare the base model swift to the expression sandero (same price). The quality and finish of the base model swift is absolutely shocking. Yes, the dacia isnt 8 or 9 grand anymore, but thats because theyve had to keep up with the mandatory safety features for the western market, such as lane keeping assist, collision alert, pedestrian safety, .... And those have a cost. This added to the extra cost of energy and transport due to the cost crisis that started in 2022, its not really possible for manufacturers to make cheap cars anymore. Theres also the fact they dont use an old platform too, its now the same platform as the 2024 renault clio. The only car competing is the mg 3 , which has an engine from the 90's and gets about 28 mpg, or the swift, which you can only get in the base model for that price, and the base model has manual windows in the back, no AC, and not even a reach adjustable steering wheel. And the infotertainment system on the swift seems to have the operating system of an old nokia 3310... Theres also the base model kia picanto in the same ball park, but thats a tiny city car. The fiat panda is 1500 quid more too. The sandero remains absolutely crazy value for money, when you compare apples to apples, yes, some tiny city cars do cost anout the same nowadays, but the sandero is better built, better equipped, and 2 classes above... The cars you need to compare to it are the polo platform, fiesta, i20 , and if you do so, the vaue remains undeniable.
