One thing I hate about many of the SUVs these days are the visibility. All the sloping back ends results in a pretty limited view out back
I test drove a Ti and an Outlander Aspire. Have to agree with the review comments here, it was the nicer car to drive, X Trail ticked a lot of boxes. The design is a bonus, very pleasing and very upmarket in design elements and appointments.
Interestingly non of the top 3 sales volume medium SUV is included here. Based on Jan data, they are CX-5, RAV4, and Outlander.

Yes the people have spoken. I know which one I'll go with and it's not in this video. 100% agree.
I have received mine 2 days ago! It is amaizing! 525Nm of torque, 7.0 s to 100 kmh very dynamic and fast, 6.3l in city ... incredible! And quality is finally top! I never thought I would love to drive Nissan/SUV!

gday mate are you still happy with the car after a year of owning it
AND.... the X Trail E Force - electric 4WD drive train hybrid with 3 cylinder generator, has a small battery pack and never needs to be plugged in. It is an even more impressive package. Super responsive and serene to drive using 6 to 7 litres/100 km. And is worth more when you sell it... so savings are great. We test drove one and my brother signed up immediately. Fabulous.

The Nissan X-Trail is the best option now in the segment, here in Chile is very popular, and the new X-Trail E-power is excellent (that would be my choice) .
Great video and explanation. Views we tend to feel like car we drive is the best, but we never tested all of them. Let's give them credit this guys, they spend a lot of time trying to give us what is best. If only we can go test them without hatred to certain we will realize how good is this car. But I feel like we must refrain from your words like , you are being paid by winner. Great video .
I particularly like the New Nissan X-Trail as It looks very stylish. In the UK Kia sells a Smaller Sized Sportage which Is also hugely popular
Nice vids
Was the x trail hybrid part of this test? Still think thats the best model variant even if its the most expensive.

Our testing included cars on sale before December 31 2022, meaning the X-Trail e-Power didn't make the cut this year, however it will be eligible for Best Medium Hybrid SUV (a new category for this year) in the 2023 awards.
I would pick the X-Trail E-Power hybrid, given its price is quite similar to a high-spec Tiguan and a diesel Sportage. Why not do my parts towards environmentally friendly?
Why is the xc60 or glc not in the list booth are superior to most mid size suvs.
What happened to the Forester ?

Why is Tucson and Sportage rated so differently while they are both the same car inside the hood ?

Having recently driven both, the Sportage felt like an Australian tuned sedan. Not so much with the Tucson.
The X-Trail needs that Merc turbo from the GLB.
Test it against the diesel Sportage with the 8 speed box and tell me which is the better driveline and better overall drive...
Agree! X-trail is right there where everything happens.
We went with a diesel Sportage as we do a lot of highway km's and towing.
Would definitely like a best hybrid suv

Not to disrespect your comment but reliability can be different for different people. For example I know someone who thinks the qashqui is a terrible car for reliability but my wife’s qashqui has been an amazing car so I always feel reliability is based on how a car is treated but I totally get why you would want that category 👍
6 months ago Drive said the best Medium SUV being the H6. I went to check again and see it says under $40K... Hmmm...
Very good lowest range sportage against mid range x trail
Tucson??
In Canada, the result is the same, best car from Moto Trend 2023 and i love the car in blue.
The X Trail won me over with it's luxurious comfort and drive.
what ever comes first i always believe and love mazda.....
I tested a tiguan but it felt like it was running on solid tires!!! then I tested a e4force xtrail and ordered one the same day - only 5 weeks to wait for it now!!!

Thanks for sharing Tony hope the X-Trail goes well for you!
My criteria for buying a SUV anytime is it's 4wd capability. Any SUV worth it's salt should have a decent 4wd option.
Never saw myself in a Nissan vehicle of any description. I have been a Mazda fan for years but their 2024 CX series is for "the rich and famous" I'm afraid. Was looking to change my Mazda 6 to a CX-60 but pricing is RIDICULOUS!! Looked at Subaru, Mitsubishi, Kia, Hyundai and Nissan. The Nissan X-trail Ti-L blew them out of the water IMHO. Happy Nissan owner as of 2 weeks ago
SEAT ateca is never considered, I’ve just bought a new one and it’s great, as good as the BMW X1 I had before.

In Australia the Formentor competes in the prestige segment, and we have luxury SUV categories still to come, which where you'll find the Cupra models.
It’s totally impossible to have 2023 Best anything in Feb. There are still 10months remaining in the year and the best car might not be launched until October. Best whatever of the year should be held in late December. What do you mean, only 3 contenders. There’s many in that category that need to go head to head.
@Drivecomau

Our selection criteria includes new or significantly updated models launched in the last 12 months, and the previous year's winner is invited back to defend its title. As we test cars continually through the year our pre-selection criteria rules out some cars. Our process means cars launched in 2022 are eligible for the 2023 award. For a comprehensive overview of the whole segment, we'll have a medium SUV Megatest later in the year where you can see the whole class compete against one another.
Surprised no CX-5, RAV4, and Outlander.
@Drivecomau

All have been beaten in previous years by the Sportage, so without a major update or price change we don't re-run those vehicles. The outlander only lost to the Sportage by one point last year so it was a tight battle. RAV4 also won our overall car of the year in 2020

@@BluePandaa284 To be clear, it's not a case of new car wins. New or comprehensively updated models can compete each year, but cars that have been ruled out of contention in previous years aren't invited back. If a vehicle couldn't win in a previous year, it won't suddenly top its class in a new calendar year. Each year the previous winner can compete to hold its title. We've had cars like the Ford Puma and Volvo XC40 win multiple years, beating out challengers in their respective categories, so it's not always 'new car wins' as you put it.
Put it on the test comparison in track race circuit for long hours at least 6 hours non stop racing the winner not broke down is the best winner King of the champion, Mitsubishi pajero, Mitsubishi outlander, expanders, x force
My brand new Forester is better in literally every single feature that they chose the X-Trail for. Better visibility, better safety, don’t have to go to the top of the range for all the features, full size spare, doors open super wide, practical cargo space, only cost me $46k, plus you can actually use them on the weekend for camping!

Mazda CX5 ?
Agree. Stay away from the "hybrid ". It's a terrible set up. It's petrol engine runs on expensive premium fuel, and the economy is poor. The battery is too small, and so easily drained. When that happens the 156kw is gone and you're left with about 100kw from the petrol engine. Poor stuff. The 2500 engine is much better value.

Sounds like politician constantly talking about family’s.....silly as plenty of singles and retired couples drove medium suvs as well ,😊😊
Effortless performance from 2.5lt naturally aspirated engine and CVT….. other motoring writers have been more accurate in their disappointment with drivetrain - not effortless at all. Needs a modern turbo. This crew also achieved way better fuel consumption figures than others have been able to achieve……. Hmmmm such inconsistency in this industry. Also where is RAV4???
x trail renault with a cvt. long term will be costly. there is a reason why kia hyundai rav4 are the kings
VW Tiguan & Taos are abysmal in the reliability department!

Why just why, they don't give us the longer Kia Sportage in Germany...we just have the short model with the super ugly c pillar. I wonder if the fake leather on the Nissan seats isn't the worst thing to sit on, especially in summer?!
You’d have to say Tiguan is best considering least amount of upgrades over the years and always at the top. Otherwise it seems like the winner is usually the newest car. So is it the best or just the newest toy to play with?

Xtrial are we kidding cvt transmission and a 20 year old 2.5l engine i like xtrails i have one older version 6 speed manual 2.0 diesel been a great car but the nee xtrail doesn't compare to the sportage
Do we agree with the judges? How can we judge for ourselves based on this “comparison” when it was really just an X-trail victory lap? Additionally, finding a winning model based on a review of an entire model range is the most pointless comparison ever, because individual buyers buy one trim, not the whole range.
I will never buy anything with a CVT, lazy engineering, period.
X TRAIL and NISSAN have such a poor reputation for reliability and service that I could never consider that choice.
X-trail? Seriously? I feel like the Drive team is going out of touch with the consumers! While I understand you’ve taken detailed evaluations and can justify your choice, when are we going to start addressing the real-world issues like reliability? When was the last time Nissan didn’t give engine issues a few years in or a Hyundai/Kia didn’t give us the fear of an engine fire? I love the Hyundai /Kia vehicles but cannot convince myself to buy another one of them based on this concern. Kudos on a very thorough review but I felt disconnected with your choices.
