2022 Yamaha YZ250X Review: Simple Still Works!

Quick ride on a 2022 Yamaha YZ250X (thanks Jesse!). The legendary YZ250 engine tuned for off road with a well jetted Keihin carburetor and amazing KYB suspension....this bike works so well! Simple still works!

    So nice! I've been wanting a YZ250X for over a year now. I think I'm going to just go ahead and get one, I've always like the 250X. I ride a lot of single track woods trails too, love that kind of riding, but I'm still riding my old '99 XR250R and it's time to upgrade, 24 years is enough. Lol

    XR250R is a classic!!! That bike will run forever!!! You will enjoy the lighter weight and get ready for a lot more power too! The KYB suspension on the YZ250X is very very good. Enjoy your new Yamaha!

    Would you prefer riding a 250fx or this 250X for trail riding?

  • @mxengineer1

    @mxengineer1

    Жыл бұрын

    Depends on the trails and your preferences. The 2-stroke offers little engine braking and has a more flickable and playful feel along with a narrower usable powerband. The YZ250FX 4-stroke has less torque and a mile wide usable powerband that you will have to rev to make peak power and more engine inertia and engine braking plus it is heavier. For tight technical trails I prefer the 2-stroke. For more flowing trails it is a toss up.

    Is it normal for oil to drip out of the power valve vent hose.?

  • @mxengineer1

    @mxengineer1

    Жыл бұрын

    There is exhaust gas pressure around the power valve so there can be some oil film present. If there is a lot (like dripping) perhaps there could be an issue with the power valve.

    I'm really looking into a yz125x or a 250x. I would describe myself as close to an intermediate riding level. I always hear about how violent the power band of a 250 2 stroke is, but it sounds like its a little more tame compared to other 250s. Would you recommend the 250X or 125X? For context, i do alot of dirt road riding, not exactly tight winding trails.

    YZ250X has a very smooth powerband - much less "hit"m than the regular YZ250 2-stroke. The new KTM/Husky 250/300 TBI engines have electronic power valve so they have very smooth powerbands. The 2020 YZ125X I owned was a lot of fun too - very smooth power for a 125.... kzread.info/dash/bejne/n2hmqZWlZKbQpqg.html

    @@mxengineer1I assume it still has 450 like power? I'm not looking for something that will pick up the front wheel every time I give it a fair amount of throttle(Though I wouldn't mind, too much is always better than too little), but I'm hesitant about the 125X because most videos I see make the 125X look slow. I currently ride a 2016 KX250F And am looking for my first 2 smoker. I've ruled out the European bikes due to complexity and aesthetics. Not a huge fan haha!

    That comes down to 2-stroke vs 4-stroke. The YZ250X 2-stroke has agility, no engine braking, and near stall proof running at low engine RPM. It also is kick start only, vibrates a little more, and requires jetting for different temperatures and altitudes and mixing gas. The '22 CRF250RX has quick and agile handling, broad linear 4-stroke power that runs clean at all temperatures, and e-start along with low vibration. The RX also is more stall prone at low engine RPM's. You have to decide what character you like better!

    The counterbalanced Austrian 250/300 2-strokes from 2017 have set the bar for almost vibration free engines (especially the 250). The YZ250X vibrates the same amount as the 2005 YZ250 (first year of the aluminum frame) which is noticeably more than any 2017 model year and later KTM 250. The YZ250/X vibration level is still acceptable to many riders.

    @@whiskeytango854 Yes a 125 small bore is a fun addition to the 300XCW. You will love the lightweight feel and it does take a lot more throttle/clutch/gear work to keep the 125 in the power especially on hills. You cannot go wrong with a 125X though I have not ridden the updated '23 125X - seems as though Yamaha traded some low to mid power/response for top end on the updated '22 YZ125 and those changes have been applied to the '23 YZ125X.

    1 and 2nd are the same as mx. 3rd is shorter..4 and 5 are taller. Especially 5th..but there is sizable a gap between 3rd and 4th..which is good for offroad the power is meaty when your on the pipe in 4th and your doing 50+mph. But for the track that dam gap is tough because 4th is too soggy early for the track and 3rd is to short so you get left in between on faster jumps..4 th your moving to fast if u want throttle response ..and third your pinned .really not what you going off most jumps..
