2022 Yamaha XSR700 - Rider Fit & Ergonomics

I take a look at the updated for 2022 Yamaha XSR700, which offers a neo-retro take on the MT-07 package, with more relaxed ergos, thanks to an upright seating position, manageable but higher than average seat height and wide bars.
Slight changes have transformed the feel of the bike in comparison to the MT-07 from which it is based, but also in comparison to the previous XSR700, alongside a more refined look care of the updated styling and LED headlight.
Here's a look at my thoughts of the bike from an ergonomic, seat height and rider fit perspective, from someone who is 180 cm tall and has a 32 inch inseam.

I'm 6 ft 2 in, (1.90m) and have a 33 inch inseam (84 cm) and the XSR700 fits me nicely. I swapped out the stock seat for the scrambler seat from the X-Tribute version and that gives you about an extra inch or 2.5cm of leg room if you need it. But even with just the stock seat, I was comfortable.

Much difference in comfort between the two, apart from the height difference?

Stunning bike. Clean simplicity and roomy. I love the colour. I may well get one. I could still keep my 390.

At 5’11 I found the Xsr more comfortable than the mt. Very surprising what a 1” difference makes in the seat and handle bars.

Yep that difference is so small when you think about it like that, but I prefer the XSR too.

Good summary of the bike’s features. I can’t seem to take my eyes off that wire harness going right over the steering stem nut though. I’ve never seen that on a bike before.

@@MotoJournoKris Ater looking at the MT07 I believe they did this because that bike has the instruments mounted on the handlebar, so it’s a carry over from there.

What would you say for someone my height as a 6ft 8? 203.5cm Viking ? Still possible to fit the xsr700. Would the Xsr900 be any better or have more ability to fit very tall riders? Thanks

It looks like you might be somewhat hunched forward. wouldn't it improve your posture into a more upright position if you raise the handlebars?

  • @MotoJournoKris

Being hunched is normal, at least that's what my first instructor told us many many years ago, and I've always found to be true from a comfort and ergo perspective on a motorcycle. He also joked that our mums would hate him for saying that, as obviously there's a lot of obsession about straight spine posture in other areas. But 'bar placement is also subjective, and in some cases a styling exercise, particularly with cruisers.

I can't understand WHY they made it so high. The side view of the bike looks ridiculous. I don't want to sit on top of the bike. I want to sit more down behind the handlebars and tank. It just looks stupid. I like the simplicity of the bike, but I couldn't sit like that for long.

It's normal height for this style of bike, you're only likely to see lower on an actual cruiser which generally have a lower seat height and taller tank/'bars because of the overall design. Only way to achieve what you're asking for here would be to run even taller 'bars and tank while everything else remained the same, making for an even taller more top heavy bike, that would probably look like an ADV. It would be a good engine in a Yamaha version of the Rebel/CMX 500 though, maybe the best P-twin for that kind of application.

@@adeanacus576 Not sure on that one. You can very aggressively downshift on this and the MT-07 with little risk of compression lock, so maybe they just assume there's one fitted. The R7 got one from memory.
