My favorite part? Dave's commentary lol I mean at least Nathan has a real costume for his short program. Not a big fan of his screen printed practice shirt but I guess that's a bit better than a straight up practice shirt.... It kinda reminds me of a poorly screen printed flag that was popular in color guards when I was in high school.....

The Ilia situation reminded me of 1980 in the decision between Sandy Lenz and Elaine Zayak. Sandy had no triples, but the committee placed her on the Olympic team and swapped in Elaine with her 7-triple program for Worlds. That gave Elaine a world of experience on which to draw as she finished second and first in the following two years.

And Vincent is a medal contender, they were going to take him. Jason if not a medal contender. Jason only once got above 270 this quad internationally and it was a 275. That is not competitive. Jason serves no use. His fs only average 170 so it wouldnt be much help in the team final that vincent cant do.

this is literally the FIRST time Ilia has skated two clean programs, while Jason has been consistently scoring around 260 internationally for a few seasons while Ilia hasn't scored that even once. I think it would be great for him to make it to the Olympics, but it's his parents/Raf/maybe even Ilia to blame- there was no campaign for him, he was doing only junior competitions and no seniors, he was not making a case for himself from the start of this season. Not to mention, USFSA was pretty transparent when it comes to their rules for Olympic team: body of work will matter. And now they're sticking with it, sticking with something we ALL knew for months and you are mad? Because they are executing what was stated in the past? I think it would be far more unfair to change what they have said about how Olympic team will be decided just because a talented teenager has pulled off two great skates.

  • @zb6070

@@hannibaljustincase9985 Jason serves 0 purpose. 260 isnt a good score anymore and jason will retire. Ilia has high scoring potential and more importantly, it is about cultivating the future, which USA and other feds do all the time. Also, ilia was skating juniors wheres scores are lower and quads are not aloud in sp, further capping his score. Sentimentally, people want jason, but strategically, it is a waste of a 3rd spot. Jason skating lights out wont win a medal. He is retiring after. there is 0 purpose to send him. Ilia lights out could win and ilia is peaking for this season. But again, it is about cultivating the future, just like how mana kawabe was sent over mai, or vincent was sent over jason in 2018.

The US men's team looking strong. I wish that young Ilia could make it to the Olympic team though. It's a pity there could be only 3 slots. There's logic behind either way to justify one of them but not the other to be in the team for Men's competition. While Russian girls look dazzling in the games, I don't necessarily appreciate how they've been trained or how the Russian federation selects their Olympic team. These girls all appear like meteor. Very disappointed at how Alena Kostornaia and Anna Sherbakova have turned out. The US doesn't have to copy Russia.

Not the best day for Vincent. But he has consistency issue and incorrect edge and toe pick for Lutz. His team should help work on that until the game in Beijing. Ilia, looking light with his jumps, nonetheless appeared to have incorrect entry into 4Lutz in the LP. Was he fully rotated or not pre-rotated? Judges seem to cut slack on entry to jumps all the time, regardless of who they are. Has Nathan recovered from the hip thing? I wish the best for Jason. Jason should ignore all the naysayers and stay focus on what he's good at, using it as his best weapon to attack in his game. Best wishes for the US team, safe and peace!

PCRs are the best and most accurate test currently and they are trying to hold an olympics without causing a massive omicron spread in their country. I think China in this case is being wise. Why is experience in the Junior division not considered 'body of work'? In Russia and Japan, the demarcation between Junior and Senior is more fluid and there is more emphasis on Junior skaters than in the United States. This is smart and how it should be. I've no doubt the selection for the Olympic team was largely made well before Nationals; Malinin was never going to be considered and this is a shame. The public should have access to broadcast performances of all Senior and Junior division skaters so that audiences (and money) can be enlarged and excitement can build for every skater in these two divisions. You don't increase the popularity of a sport by exclusive media contracts who in turn decide who sees what based upon what they think makes them the most money by selling advertising. This corporate gatekeeping is limiting the sport because it will always favor established skaters with a media presence over younger talent. This also has a huge influence over the pool of quality coaches. Making sure these up-and-coming skaters have a chance to perform at the sport's biggest events keeps them hungry and keeps the reigning champions wary -- all good for a competitive sport. Sorry for the rant; I had to vent.

Emotional intentions get mediocre results. Jason should not have been picked for the olympics. From where I see it there is more benefit in sending ilia in the long and short term plans. He can benefit from this event and get experience and rub elbows with the biggest and begin forming a potentially stable male skater, and in the short term you are also aiding the team event because his point output is better than jason's. There is absolutely no benefit in sending Jason to the olympics. He already peaked. This is not shade. It is objective thinking.
