Hey Andy, Been living with my 2018 Speedmaster for 2 years, beautiful black and white tank like the one you previously tested. It's my only vehicle, I use it daily for commuting all year round and at the weekend whenever we get a good day! What a machine! Endlessly comfortable, and no lower back pain at all, even if I'm 4 hours plus in the saddle on a ride out with the IAM. (upgraded to the comfort seat which looks identical to the seat on the new model you're enjoying here). Always a pleasure to ride, whatever the weather, because both the handling and grip are superb (Avon Cobra Chrome tyres, almost identical to stock which I replaced last summer). It happily keeps up with the big GS adventure bikes, even in the Twisties around the lake District and Northumberland when we're out for the day, although you do have to adapt and make more use of your lane in the hairpins in order to avoid scraping. Took my wife on a tour round Wales last spring and the NC500 in the summer... to my surprise the bike was able to handle some rather unnerving road surfaces effortlessly, even 2 up!!! Everywhere we went we found a dusty GS at the summit and received a very warm welcome from those sat next to them. I'll never sell my Speedmaster, it is incredibly capable, a real joy to own, the engine really is fantastic and I love the classic aesthetic. You get 120 to 150 miles out of a full tank, which was a concern fore on tour around the north coast of Scotland... But I actually managed very easily, didn't struggle at all, you just need to get comfortable having only 20 to 40 miles range left by the time you're at a pump haha. IMPORTANT: For those considering a Speedmaster: 1.)I advise buying 2019 or later model otherwise you run the risk of an expensive gear selector issue which must be repaired, possibly multiple times. It is a known fault that Triumph have been very quiet about. Thankfully my particular bike has not develop this fault and later models are entirely unaffected. 2.) It is Not a 2 up tourer, that pillion seat, even the upgraded one, is very uncomfortable for the pillion on long journeys. So whilst the machine is more than capable, do not buy for the purpose of 2 up touring (I didn't, but my wife decided she loved being on the bike with me at the weekend so much that she'd put up with the seat on tour). It's a fabulous 1 person tourer and absolutely wonderful for a weekend blast around the countryside with your pillion. 3.) If you take the plunge, get three very important accessories: A full size MadStad touring screen. Its fully adjustable and can be taken off or put on securely in 30 seconds flat; perfect for motorway cruising, and also for keeping the cold wet air off your chest in the winter. The OEM screen is pants... But the OEM Leather panniers x2 are FAB. Get heated grips, take your pick, OEM are pricey but smart and adequate. 4.) Be prepared to clean it weekly as a minimum. No point letting that chrome go to waste, there's a lot of it too. In the winter that also means a thorough daily rinse to avoid corrosion.

Thanks for this comment. I’ve been eying this bike as a daily driver/second vehicle beside the car my wife mostly uses. Been having concerns about regularly taking a passenger (sportster is awful 2up), seems like it will be fine for both of us around town or a day to the beach etc.

Some brilliant advice there thank you. I'm waiting for my 2022 model as my wife fancied coming on days out with me and I'm not confident taking her on my tall gs. I've ordered the big oem screen but will cancel this now on your recommendation. I wasn't sure about it anyway. Also ordered the wax cotton panniers and I've heard those are useless too. Looks like a radiator guard is a priority too. I'm starting to get buyers remorse a bit now as its a lot of money to fork out and the 3 month wait is making me over-think it! How have you found the bike since you commented?

I've had my new Speedmaster for about 5 weeks now. Very pleased with it, although it took a bit longer to get acclimatised to it than other bikes I've owned (it being my first cruiser). My only tip for anyone thinking of getting one, would be to get the optional radiator guard (£82 I think), because with the rather short front mudguard and the completely unprotected radiator. I discovered I was getting quite a few stone chips on the radiator with a few weeks. I've now ordered and fitted (very simple) a Triumph guard, which hopefully will stop this. In truth a guard probably should be fitted as standard. Other than that, a great bike. Very comfortable, great engine and handles surprisingly well for a cruiser.

It needs front fender. Seems they bobbed the most important part of the fender and left the rather useless part on. I wonder if it could be slid way down. Style and technology can either be a blessing or a curse.

I’m lucky enough to of bought the gold line version, the paint is amazing. The bike itself is very comfortable, lots of torque and rides really smooth, I’ve come from having Harleys but I’ve been struggling with the heavy clutch for a while now with arthritis in my left hand. The torque assist clutch has made a real difference for me, great bike.

Spot on review Andy. 👍 I have a Speedmaster Gold Line on order from last year. Having said that I love the Hopper Red so I am leaning towards that colour. I rode one in 2021 and thought it was very slightly better than the previous model, I think this was down to the new seat and the larger front forks (42mm to 47mm diameter). This bike somehow magically hides its weight compared to other bikes, including my Softail Deluxe which is listed at 305kgs (its probably 330kgs really) but the Speedmaster feels significantly lighter. In fact I rode the new Sportster S back in October and that felt much heavier and that is listed at 225kgs. There really is no comparison between these two bikes as they are so different but having waited 3 years for the new Harley to arrive and within minutes of riding it I ordered the Speedmaster. The Speedmaster really is an amazing bike. The only thing I might do to mine when it arrives is to fit mid controls (which is a Triumph option) as I think the bike looks perfect as it is. Thanks for the follow up review, I really enjoyed that. Nice jacket BTW 👍

I almost bought the Low Rider S after I test drove one at a Harley/Triumph/BMW dealership; but then right after, I test drove the SM and no contest. Hands down! I purchased the Goldline LE that afternoon - it was not even yet in the shop I bought it from. The sales guy told me that he rarely ever spends time with the Goldlines as they only get one in per year and are sold before arrival and rarely sit in the showroom. They just arrive, go to the service shop for prepping before being picked up by the new owner, sight unseen.

Agree with you 100% about the single clock. This is the only thing that lets the bike down imho. A nicer large chromed clock would have been much much better or twin brush stainless steel clocks or aluminium clocks as fitted to the original Thruxton R would have made the bike truly epic. The single black plastic clock just looks cheap and .......... not so nice to me. Definitely the weakest part of the bike imho. Also once you hit 75-80mph it starts to get a bit ragged and run out of breath. 85-90mph and there is fair amount of vibration. 6th gear doesn't seem to do very much except bring the revs down a bit to make higher speed riding more bearable. Long motorway rides are not it's strong point nor what it was designed for. You are hanging on to it for dear life without a screen at motorway speeds anyway. A screen is needed for higher speed riding. However I found there is much to like about the bike just as you say. It is a joy to ride, so unintimidating and does look gorgeous. It's a hoot to cruise around B roads, back roads and lanes in rural country side between pretty villages cafes and pubs on a warm dry summers day. It's pretty agile for a cruiser and turns in fairly easily and as you say has got some shove. Gotta watch those footpegs though. It sounds pretty good as well with those pipes although the V&H ones sound even better but NLA for this later Euro 5 version. I also wish Triumph had given it 100bhp as well similar to the Speed Twin or Thruxton R/RS. It is a Speed Master after all.

Errr ....... the front forward controls are not best suited to shorter riders or those with shorter legs as the stretch means you can't easily operate the gear and brake levers. I know as I am short and tried. After a while it got quite awkward and substantial discomfort set in on my test ride. Maybe there is scope for adjustment. The dealer didn't seemed bothered not offering to adjust the controls so they fitted me.

Good review Andy, I was sold after sitting on it at the NEC Bike Live 2017, I got mine in 2018 as they came available (2nd one sold in the West of Scotland!) and I love it, Cherry red like your test bike. As mentioned above - de -cat it and it becomes a better bike. It is smoother at low speed with the X pipe fitted ( easy mod ) and sounds even better! There are loads of tasteful little add ons available from the likes of Motone Customs too which just add to the classic look. Nothing better on a summers day on the East Coast of Scotland, roll on summer!

Nice jacket. Finally some manufacturers are clueing up to the fact that if we can wear it off the bike too, it's a winner. On travels it's one less bit of kit to carry. Low speed tours don't need race level protection. Management approves so another tick in the box. One in tan please Tick in your box for riding through truly unpleasant weather for the cause. Nice one Happy travels 👍

Great review. Really helpful. I have just sold my Triumph Street Triple R 765 and about to put a deposit on the 2022 Speedmaster ( Red Hopper color ) tomorrow. I haven’t been able to get a test ride of this bike though because of the shortage of these bikes here in Australia. I know it’s going to be a big switch for me moving in from a Naked bike to a cruiser. I have tried this on the shop floor and does feel comfortable to sit and the handle bars do make you feel relaxed. I am 5’8” and the seating position looks perfect. Read a few comments here talking about this bike not suitable for long rides ( 2-3 hr rides ). And also someone did mention the bike lacking the power at higher speeds. And of course the single display. Got me thinking now. I would see myself as a weekend rider and would do a few rides with my wife on pillion seat.

Great honest review, yes nice bike, but just overpriced in my opinion by £1500 and £800 for hand painted pinstripes is obviously why the bike now comes with plain paintwork on the tank, while on about the tank, it is a little small at 12 litre and cant see a real reason for that, especially when you see the gaps between the front of the seat and the tank. And lastly i agree fully with you with regards the single black instrument clock, this bike screams out for a pair of chrome instrument clocks, if only to follow the rest of the look and styling that Triumph has tried to achieve.

Hi Andy, I’ve had my Speedmaster since June 2018 and as you know, I love it. The sound, looks and comfort make it the ideal cruiser for me. I have the cream and black with gold lined coachwork and it looks fab. I have spent some funds on Vance n Hines exhausts (sound great) and some Motone bits and pieces in brass - definitely look good. Problems - well not many. The main ones are difficulty finding the right paddock stand, the front wire loom is attached to the “beach bars” with a type of elastic band - it works but it’s a bit naff and I see the new model hasn’t changed this! Get’s in the way when attaching a nav/gone holder. As you say grinding the pegs is fun and the single display rather than having two is a mistake. Great, great bike and I’ll never sell. Yours aye, Alan

As far as I am concerned, the main problem with the Speedmaster is that it really is a cruiser. It looks really good and I hope I can arrange for a test ride this spring. But I had some hopes it might be a possible downsized replacement for the Road King and with a 12l tank, non existent to spartan passenger accommodation and half baked luggage options it would seem the Triumph is not nearly enough of a tourer.

Triumph generally miss a lot of tricks in my view. For example the Thunderbird 1700 LT has no cruise control (and neither did the original Rocket touring) or hard luggage, and i agree it is hard to see the Speedmaster being able to tour especially with that tiny tank and as you say poor luggage options! It's a shame because in lots of ways they make very appealing bikes!

I had the dealer move the foot controls to center like the bobber, the forward controls are easily removed with the bracket that holds them. I prefer more center position. Big handlebars are excellent though I did have those swapped to T120 bars for a bit of a lean forward position. You will need new clutch and brake cables to prevent kinking. Original ones are too long. However give the big bars a chance, they are terrific. Hindsight I would just keep them. More comfortable on long rides than the T120 bars. Absolutely beautiful bike to ride. 👍 no chance you’ll be disappointed.

Things I didn't like was the location of the ignition key and a seperate lock for the steering, wish I had a $ for every time I started the darn thing before (quickly) realising i hadn't unlocked the steering. Also didn't like the aluminium casings on the engine, very prone to oxidising and pitting. But there was a lot more to like about the bike, especially the torque and the sound of the standard pipes. Very nice Mr Flyer! The £800 premium for the Goldline is a bit much though. For less than that you could have a custom job done on the the standard tank? Ditching the heated grips in favour of the cruise control is an error in my opinion but Triumph are clearly appeasing different markets? Probably the USA. You can have OEM heated grips fitted of course (the wiring is already there and the tell-tale on the dash just needs enabling in software) but they are a bit pricey at around £250 fitted. I like what you said about the brake reservoir and my other half Kel's would agree. She calls the plastic jars "p*ss pots" 😂

In the U.S. we call them "Beach bars", many of the bicycles on the beach sport this style of handlebars. Many early Harley's sported them too. I look at what you call "fake carbs" and I quite like the styling of item which can be very ugly on other bikes unless completely hidden. Additionally it makes it easy to get at when you need to get at it and adding pod filters versus those hidden ones. I don't own one and probably never will but I really do like the styling on it.

My RST & Alpine stars gloves have more reliable Velcro fastening & back of wrist strap adjusters .& both pairs still new . Good review as usual 👍

Rode with one in amongst a group of Harleys last summer from Lands End to John O’Groats on the Malle Rally. The bike certainly lived up to its name and looked every bot as maneuverable in the tricky roads as my Harley Sportster XL1200 Custom. It has cruise control which is one of the main things I would look for on a bike next time round, especially if there is a speed limiter function. Do you know of any bikes that do? Living on the edge of London the 20 limit everywhere is really hard to handle its impossible to find the right gear in many situations. All in favour of 20 for schools etc and village centers, but too many roads are being ‘20’ed while others that might be more fairly ‘20’ are still at 30.

@@TheMissendenFlyer This is about to become the next purchase. Being one of the proletariat garage wise can only manage two bikes for now unless I get rid of the dusty exercise kit.

Ita a Great Bike ! mine is in black and white metallic tank finish! Lovely engine with the best low down tork! I find the clutch is light not heavy on my 2018 model! Lovely bike to ride I would suggest more of a summer time Bike it will easily cruise far beyond the 70 limit if it was Legal! Love the cruise control You will need a small but Very effective fly screen to keep the wind pressure off you! As Andy has said no downside to this bike apart from the disappointing 130 miles Range!

Interesting response by Triumph to the frequent criticisms of their paint schemes: offer a decent alternative for a mere £800 extra! That is not far off the amount many car manufacturers charge for “premium” paint jobs. Your bloopers alluded to the clutch being heavy. Is it? I would find the tiny fuel tank a major irritant, along with the “bugs bunny” mirrors. And only the maker of fender-extenders could love that impractical front mudguard.

Even with the modified forward controls, shorter inseam people may find it uncomfortable. What I like about standard controls is when I see a bump or dip approaching I can use my feet and legs to stabilize myself. Not so true with forward controls!

I really like the speedmaster, it’s a great looking bike, but, soon as you mention 12L for the fuel tank I’m out. Anything with less than 20L or may be 17 if it’s frugal on fuel is a none starter for me. With a 12L tank if I have done say 30miles before I put the bike in the garage ( not often we put bike away having come from a fuel station round the corner) then within an hour or so of going out I’m thinking about getting fuel. We are all different but for me that would get irritating.

I like most everything about my 2018 Speedmaster. The one thing I would change would be a larger fuel tank.

Great review. I was really pleased to see you cover this bike again, as it's currently top of my want list. I nearly bought one last time I changed my bike but opted for the 1200 Scrambler instead, because of its pillion space... but I've still got a yearning for a big cruiser. The one you tested had the pillion removed, but is be interested to know what the pillion seat is like, especially if I fitted the optional back rest.

Upgraded pillion seat to delux option. Is comfy and particularly good with back rest. Only downside is that the side bags need removing to be able to use the rear pegs

Triumph.. please make a 'Black' style edition for those of us who want/need less chrome, but also want/need the practicality we don't get from a Bobber.

Lovely bike, if I could afford any Triumph I would go for this one I think. Dunno if there are any aftermarket pipes that are a bit straighter, I guess this arrangement is for emissions, or noise regulation. I remember the Triumph America which was similar but I think is gone now, never could quite get along with the name “Triumph America”, but “Speedmaster” is considerably better. Great video as always.

When I rode one I had the same issue with the foot pegs. They are available with the mid-footrest, same as the bobber which would be my preference. Would also take the pressure off your lower back.
