Prius is kind of the car for an adult, when you just need to get from A to B everyday reliably. It's fine. I laugh when I'm at the pump and fill up for less than $30, meanwhile the diesel F250 next to me is Northward of $200.00.

My 2014 Prius Plug in just turned 280,000 with no repairs since i bought it with 22,000 miles from the Toyota dealer. $20,999 I drive 1000 miles per week. The Headlights and floor mats are the only parts replaced. San Diego to LA every day. I spend the gas saving on race fuel for my RM250

That’s a lot of driving how do you hold up over the years? Not the car…you? What do you do for work?

With gas prices going crazy this is the perfect car for commuters.

I purchased my 2022 Prius Prime XLE end of August 2021 (there were only 2 Primes available in my state at the time so Limited wasn’t an option) and I absolutely love it. My daily work commute (mostly highway) is about 22 miles so I run electric all week. I live in the Tampa Bay Area so pretty much everything I need - groceries, shopping, eating out, visiting family and friends - is within the electric range and I only have to use gas when I go out of town, have a particularly busy in town driving day - or just need to use up some gas to keep from letting it sit too long in the tank - so my mpg is in the hundreds. I have my windows tinted so I don’t have that glare on the screen - I think that makes a big difference. Also, I park in a garage each day for work so that helps with the Florida heat and getting the car cool inside when it’s been sitting and it doesn’t get real cold here in the winter. I had a Camry before this and honestly, the Camry was a better ride, but not as much of a difference as one would think. My husband and I think the Prius Prime is pretty comfortable and we have taken it on multiple 3-4 hour trips and we aren’t youngsters lol. I paid about 32K for my XLE as there was an up charge added on the invoice of 4K because of the high demand for this car - or any car for that matter - at the time. I talked them down to $1500 on the up charge and a lot of my friends said “no way” would they have paid that, but they gave me a fantastic trade in price for my Camry and over time - as I’ve read so many reviews of people putting 200K+ miles on their Prius Primes - I think it was a good deal for me.

I've had my 2022 Prime Limited for three weeks. So far, I love it. I commute 25 miles to work and 25 miles home. So far, using ECO mode driving into work I am getting 78 mpg. On the way home I'm using EV mode. So far, the overall MPG + EV it comes out to just over 120 MPG so far, including my errands around town. For me, it is all about practicality. We'll see what happens when it gets cooler as we set into cooler fall weather.

Nice open minded review! My 2017 Prime is a gem, but I'm biased...I'm one of those efficiency needs for sure, eco & env leaning (and all that goes with that ;-). There's a good reason the Prime hasn't changed significantly in 5 years, Toyota hit a home run with the Prime and I plan on keeping it for another 5 or 10 years, or until they make an all electric model. Nice job on the review, agree with 97% of what you said.

I’ve always been a car enthusiast, owned a sti, s2000, vette, evo9, evoX, and recently a civic type R. I now drive a Prius. It’s a great freaking car guys, once you own one you’ll never go back to pure gasoline engine vehicles. He’s right about one thing though, the only reason I got one is because I moved to California recently, the fuel prices here are bonkers.

During the pandemic, I went a year and a month with spending only $6 on gas with our 2018 Prius Prime. It's great for going to daily dives in town on the battery, but there are no worries about getting stuck on the road with no changing station on a longer road trip.

My Prius Prime gets over 50 mpg no matter how I drive it.

I am Japanese. I think this car is wonderful, but Japanese people can't look at things objectively, so American reviews are helpful. I think the Tesla 3 is a good car, but the charging environment in Japan is still not good enough, so I chose this car.

Have a 2022 limited and it is a solid vehicle - laugh if you want - current 10 gal tank? Over 1600 miles on it, haven’t put gas in it since January - electricity costs last month? $16 - you will find that with a full stack this thing is quick off the line - speed falls off after 50mph but no problem merging onto freeway - handles well in turns due to suspension and larger batter pack - full of tech (full range cruise, lane centering for hand off driving, auto hi beams, wipers etc) comfortable seating with heat and heated steering wheel - what more is needed in a commuter - and I paid $34,500 for mine

@@johnandre8723 We purchased from Tonkin motors in Portland Oregon (Had to drive down from Seattle to purchase) they do not add markup and being in a compliance state have access to the primes - I purchased in Nov 2021 when Toyota still had a $1500 rebate - today, if you can get at list then that is a good as it gets - my suggestion to to use cargurus or some list service and start calling around with a few state radius - I got on a few lists and when someone backed out of a deal we swooped in and purchased it right quick - just happened to get the color and trim I wanted - trust me, with the MPG on this thing even flying out and then driving back you will be miles ahead (no pun intended)

I had a 2015 Prius with 140,000 miles and absolutely loved it. The gas mileage was super awesome, especially on long trips. Never had any problems with it. I'm trying to get another one, but, you just can't go to a dealership and buy one. It can take up to 60 days get one through dealership.

I think the radical design adds up to 15 miles a gallon in gas savings.

It was hard to get my Prius Prime. I was shocked that I had to put $6,000 down for a lease. This car was also hard to get. They do not sell Prius Prime in PA only in NJ or Maryland I take a walk in the morning to charge my car and another walk in the afternoon. I will average 120 mpg for a tank of gas and 1000 mile range. I am glad I got the Limited, love the heads up display

Its like a strategy game when you think too much driving this vehicle... I have a 2021, just took it on a 5k mile trip and found new techniques in increasing overall mileage.. about 19.5k total mileage and the overal fuel economy is up over 77 and rising..

When CarPlay is connected, when speaking commands, the default Toyota system responds, how do i get CarPlay to only respond and quiet downToyota responding?

I would love a Prime if Toyota took it seriously, give a nice base version with minimal screen BS. The 2nd gen interior imo was the best laid out and still fresh despite almost 20 years old. The Prime battery is just thrown in on 4 inch stilts above the wheel wells, namely because the 4th Gen TNGA architecture upgraded to rear independent suspension from torsion beams. Great for smuggling!!! The pre refresh of the Prime shows Toyota's dishearted, half assed attempt. The pre fresh only had 4 seats because PR assumed that prime buyers were more like Lexus buyers and wanted more exclusivity. That was quickly changed. One thing Toyota can do easily is use the power inverters of its more powerful hybrids. The RAV4 Prime is a bit of a 301hp beast, it uses all 127 of its electric HP with its 174 hp engine together The Prius only uses a fraction of its battery ~25hp like the regular one, when it can do over 80hp alone in EV mode, but only 121hp with the engine. Done right it should do just 180 hp.

It doesn't come with mud guards. Is it worth installing them or would that negatively impact MPG too much?

My brother in law (an auto mechanic) says to avoid the CVT transmission for a few years, until the unknown is worked out. He said it will take time. The problem is every manufacturer is using that transmission on small cars. Not SUV's...but small cars. Go figure.

Where is the all electric best used? City or Highway? No spare tire?

I've got a prius prime, this would be my 4th prius. There are and features I'm not in love with, like the climate control on screen. I'd rather have some kind of "auto AC" button so while the other stuff is loading on screen, I can use the AC. I'm still learning it so I may have to adjust to it with the smart phone

I'm surprised that in your review of the rear end you didn't mentioned that the glass is entirely different and a distinguishing feature of the Prime.

While I enjoy my 2022 Prius Prime, I have had to make some accomodation with the reduced aft storage area. Additionally with the rear seats down, the floor of the storage area is not flat. However, one cannot argue with the mpg or Toyota quality.

Mostly felt the same way about the Prius but the prime + hopefully better styling coming in 2023 has me at least considering it. Pure electric has gone bonkers in pricing so PHEV makes more sense these days.

I had a bit of misery when gas prices were over $5/gallon in Iowa even with my 2013 Honda Civic. When driving in Eco mode, I think it is slower than the Prius and still doesn’t get great mpg. The Prius is looking more and more attractive. I just wish they didn’t retain their value so well. Cars with 100k are still quite expensive.

Noting the fact this video is from March, I observe you really emphasized the plug in capability you didn't inform the warning that if used on electric mode only one could really mess up the fuel system with stale gasoline. Some folk have found out that is a pricey problem to fix out of pocket as this problem I do not believe is covered via warranty!

With good use of regenerative braking, fuel consumption of 30km/L can be achieved. Every time your Prius stops at a traffic light, your driving gets an eco-score. Seeing this, the owner's eco-driving is getting better and better. I am Japanese.

I have loved the Prius. There are so many good things about it. The new styling is so fantastic! Now, here are problems. The styling brings the roof lower, especially in the back seats. If you have a Prime (as my son) you can get around 100 mpg! Being $36,000 sounds expensive but it is cheap compared to other EVs. Oh, don't think this car is slow. If you know how to drive it, it will beat EVERYTHING off the red light! I have done this with the Hybrid model for about 2 years!

Blackout tint at the rear passenger sides solved the screen glare...

I test drove a 2019 regular Prius for the first time ever back then in 100 degree weather and man I loved the AC. My glasses fogged up and I didn’t have the slightest sign of sweat at all. It was a white Prius so I don’t know if it was because of the color white. I did go back few days later with my dad and we went in a classic green color one and I wasn’t too impressed with the AC in that one. I still think about that white Prius to this day lol. But I never could get over that style of the car. Prius prime looks even worse in my opinion. I test drove a white Chevy bolt as well on a Hot day and I didn’t even notice a battery drain. I took it home for a bit and let it run the whole time with the AC on. I don’t think it drained the battery. Chevy bolt was another car I was considering. I prefer the Chevy bolt more. But you know forget about it now lol. Higher prices and the bolt is in limbo. So is the white car myth true then? It does make the car cooler? Those where the first two white cars I ever been in and it was noticeably colder

Have you looked at the 2022 bolt ev's? They are fully redesgined inside and out. They look more sporty and agressive. The seats are more comfortable and it has a much better screen and center console. They even offer adaptive cruise control now. The 2020-2022 bolts werent having battery issues. Only the 2017-2019 models as they had a different battery pack. However chevy replaced everyones batteries with the new ones to solve the problem. It has good performance and a good amount of range. You can get a fully loaded bolt (2lt with ACC and a 7 speaker audio sytem with a sub) for 36,665. About the same price as this prius prime limited. 0-60 is 6.5. It has a 360 camera and everything its an amazing car for 2022 and also the cheapest Ev worthwhile. I should also mention the older models are no longer in recall and bolts are hitting the lots again.

@@wetzel82 I prefer the previous design lol. The new one is not that great looking. They didn’t really do much with the seats in the new version. If I were to buy one I would have gotten the 2021. But I’m gonna pass on an EV or a new car for now. This inflation crap is really screwing me. It would be financial suicide for me to buy a new car now.

@@Catman1798 Interesting! I think the previous design wasn’t very great but i love the new design. I can see how you’d like it the other way tho. And for me I test drove both gens and I think that the new seats are actually a large improvement. Still not tesla comfort but they’re better than before. The range is too. Even tho it’s rated at 259 miles, I’ve seen in 80+ degree weather over 320 miles of range. Unfortunately the car market is crazy right now but the price of a new car isn’t going to change anytime soon. Thankfully bolts can be found without markups at most dealers. But if your old car is still in good works then I’d say it’s a very smart decision to keep it for now. Especially if you like the previous gen bolts i’d give it a year and they might go down in price a lot. Although i’ve seen quite a few 2020’s priced at 19-23k.

Before the recall I saw them for $23,999 for a base model. Now they don’t even post the price on the websites of dealerships. I sure would love to test drive one again though lol

@@Catman1798 They do have their prices posted! New ones at the dealers show the price and used ones too. Idk what state you live in but I’m in cali they all show prices. Also, it’s better to look on vroom, carvana, carmax. They have 2020 and 2021 bolts for 19-22 k base model.

Once you looked into the amazing technical details of this car with that E-CVT planet wheel gearbox, the MG1 and MG2 electromotors/generators, the DC-DC AC-DC convertor, the electric AC and all the other bullitproof stuff in this car, you never going back to a regular ICE car. Unless you need a fast car offcourse. 😂 A daily driver for the next twenty years.

The first thing I did when I bought mine was take off the wheel covers, they sell for about $75 each on eBay. The Toyota center caps for the alloys underneath are about $100 for 4, so I just got some 60mm stick-on caps with the design of my choice on eBay, 16 of them for under $1 each.

When I got mine, it did not, but I had one installed. Wasn't an issue, except they tightened the screws to the driver visor too much and caused the vanity mirror light to stay on. They got it fixed.

But the cargo place is smaller than standard Prius

@@wr3504 Some models of the regular prius have a spare, our 2016 model 3 prius had onen, none of the AWD ones have a spare, none of the primes have a spare - wish I could point you to specific models that come with a spare but I think Toyota is phasing out spares on all of their prius - weight saving? cost saving? want to make life more difficult for you? had to say

@@wr3504 Good luck buying new cars in the future. Fewer and fewer new cars have a spare. I've experienced more danger changing a tire at the side of a road (including on ice) than I have waiting for AAA or limping home keeping the rim riding on the dead tire at 14mph. When I got my Prime, I changed my AAA to 200 mile towing max. I do recommend putting the strongest possible tires on the car. To date, the best I've found are Michelin X-Ice3 205/65R15XL 99T. They are 10 load index numbers higher than stock, add just over 1/4 inch ground clearance, and handle like race tires, with the car riding like it's on rails at 50psi all around. (Sidewall: max pressure 51psi cold) They lasted 63K miles on my Prime, running them year-round including New England in winter and Arizona in summer. I then went to taller 205/70R15 96T for even more ground clearance, but they did rub one time when pulling several Gs in a road dip, and they are squirmier in crosswinds.

I would’ve gone with the 2022 Prius Prime if it had two things: 1) AWD and 2) At least 40 miles of pure EV range. And honestly, it could be a bit quicker, but that wasn’t a priority for me like the aforementioned two things I was looking for. I went with a 2022 Rav4 Prime instead and so far it’s been good to me this year. 🤞

Toyota knows how to makes care. If you want fuel economy then no car can beat it except tesla's but then the price of tesla is 40K about Prius. The car is reliable and efficient.

This car has aluminum wheels. Pull the plastic caps. They are not too bad. No steel wheels.

Electric cars are great ......... but at $55,000 and up, they are a little bit too much. Meanwhile, the Prius Prime gives you 'some' of that electric range, and for only around half the price of what an electric car will cost you right now.

Ouch!!! Consider buying the wreck from your insurance company, and selling the battery to one of us as a spare! Just saving some super expensive parts to sell might make sense. I assume the carbon-fiber hatch is good, maybe one side of the super expensive headlights?

Now you take me for example, I live in the South, am the farthest thing from a green tree-hugger, and I have a Prime LE on order. It's all a matter of perspective. I'm a car guy and I like electrics/hybrids because of the evolution of automotive technology that you see in them.
