2022 Texas Bird Migration

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

The bird migration along the Texas Gulf Coast is spectacular. In 2022 I spent 100 hours to create this short video of the birds I saw. How many can you name?

Just wanted to pass this along to you. I met the individuals responsible for maintaining Sabine Woods of the Texas Ornithological Society (3-25-2023). I showed them your video and they absolutely loved it. They are sharing it with their members. Also, you mentioned the cost. There is a membership fee of about $35.00 that last for one year and gets you into Sabine Woods. Once again they absolutely loved the way you presented Sabine Woods to the World. The next time you are there stop back by Howard's water feature and you just may see Howard there. He is a delight to talk to. Take care!!!!

What a cool message to receive!! Thank you for letting me know. I am glad they liked the video and I plan to do an additional video of the spring bird migration of 2023. I don't know where I will spend my time as it will depend on which area has the most birds. I am sure I will spend at least a couple days at Sabine Woods. Question: I just paid the $8 ever day as I didn't know how to have proof that I paid other than saying my money is in the box. If I pay the $35 how do I show proof?

Brian - the 7 and 1/2 minute video is based on 10 days of watching and looking for birds. I have a much greater appreciation for what some of the world class Professional photographers go through to get some of a picture. Days, weeks and in some cases months to get "that" picture or video. I love walking, standing, listening and looking or birds and wildlife. Glad you enjoyed the video and recognized the time involved. You may also like the 2023 bird migration video, the other birds videos and particularly the "Have you seen a Moose in the Wild video"'.

Ken - I feel blessed to be able to see the central flyway migration of neotropical birds in the spring so close to my home. I am already looking forward to this April to see what shows up on the Texas Gulf Coast this year. One place I have always wanted to go is MaGee Marsh just east of Toledo OH. I believe you are a little closer, an 8 hour drive. Maybe I will get there next year. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Good luck with your birding in 2024!

@@Jeffswildlifeadventures hey BTW Jeff, I'm planning a big, one month long, cross country birding trip which will include nearly 3 weeks in South Texas.... South Padre Island several of course, but definitely want to add Sabine Woods, and Boy Scout Woods in High Island, and a week in SE AZ on the way home :) I forgot to ask when I first responded to this video 8 months ago.... "What was the date of this trip" ??? I'm planning to be in South Texas from about April the 18th - May 6th.... The big question will be, where to choose if I see a "fallout" coming ??? :)

@@Chris_Wolfgram The migration birding on High Island and Sabine Woods in mid March with peak birding the last two weeks of April and the first week of May. The birding starts to tail off on these locations towards May 1st but I have gone as late as the 10th of May and had a good day. The other things you should look at is the timing of each species during the migration. As an example the Blue-headed Vireo is an early migrator while the Blackburnian Warbler is late in the migration order. (The videos you have seen are a combination of ~12 full days from about the 10th of April through the end of the month. My biggest challenge is deciding which days to go as I live ~2 hours from Sabine Woods and 1.5 hours from High Island). I tend to go during the week as I am retired and don't need to go when its crowded but if the prediction is birding will be good I will go on the weekend too. I feel the birding at Sabine Woods is more consistent but weather and wind can have an impact on the birds at each location. I don't know where you are staying but Sabine Woods is a lot further away about an additional 30 to 45 minutes. Regarding a Fallout because the bird numbers are down so much, people say its been a number of years since they have had a true fallout. I think either will be good if there is a fallout. Sabine Woods just added an additional two drips so if its a dry year I would definitely head to Sabine Woods. High Island can get more crowded particularly on a weekend. Talk to people when you are in the area and the local birders will help you decide where to go. One thing I did not understand at first, the birds are flying all night the birds start to arrive sometime in the afternoon so even if you don't see a lot in the morning do not leave until late in the afternoon as they may be on there way. I always thought early in the morning would be the best but this is not the case during the migration. The best timing for birds is the week of the 18th so I would come to Houston first and then head to South Texas. If you were coming earlier I might reverse the order. I have only gone to south Texas for winter birding, not sure what you are expecting to see or are looking for (?) do some more research on this. You will see the normal residents like Green Jays, Kiskadee, different Kingbirds, etc. SE AZ, look up Cave Creek Ranch just outside Portal AZ. Place is amazing. I believe your timing will be perfect to see the Elegant Trogon (I have not see as I haven't been there at the correct time.) I would be interested in where you go in AZ and how you compare the different locations you visit. Don't forget bug spray!!!!!!! mosquitoes can be unbelievable but can have days where there are few mosquitoes but you have to have bug spray. If you have any other questions let me know and I will try to help. In addition if you recognize me while visiting the different location on your trip please say hello.

@@Jeffswildlifeadventures wow, thank you so much for the in depth reply 🙂 I'm coming from California. Will take me 2 1/2 days, but once I'm there, I'll be staying in Brownsville a lot.... I'm a truck stop car camper, so all I need is the closest truck stop to wherever I'll be birding the next day. I will be bouncing all over the Rio Grande Valley. As well as the Hill county to the North. Once I travel up and around to High Island, I'll do Sabine Woods too while I'm up there.... And might spend 3 or 4 days up there if I'm doing well 👍 I'll be watching the weather the whole time. Hey I did experience a small to medium fallout at South Padre in Spring 22, and it was unbelievable 🙂 it would have been a "good" trip without the fallout, but with it, it put it over the top 🙂 I think I can get from South Padre Island to Sabine or Boy Scout Woods, in 6 or 7 hours. Thinking about what you said, I think I'll do those longer 6 or 8 trips, early morning, so I can do my birding in those places that afternoon, vs early morning birding and driving all afternoon. This is counter intuitive, but I think your right 🙂👍 Hey btw, I'd like to meet you if our days line up. You can send me a message on my Flickr page, link in my channel 👍 Much thanks again 🙂

William - I am providing the same information as I did on your other video to insure you received the information you are looking for: Sabine Wood also know as the Texas Ornithological Society Sabine Woods is located along the Texas coast close to Port Arthur TX and west of Sabine Pass TX on Hwy 87. www.beaumontcvb.com/listing/sabine-woods/1424/. If you copy this address in your browser it will provide a lot more details. The spring migration has passed for this area of the country but if you visit in the last three weeks of April you will be amazed! If you need additional details let me know and I will attempt to provide.

BUGS!!! I spent 2021 in the same areas and will never forget it. One morning I forgot to put insect repellant around my ankles and pantlegs and applied it sometime before noon. Too late...my legs, nearly to my crotch were infested with chiggers by the next day. Remember......bug spray, plenty and often.

Dave - Your comment is so true and made me laugh because no matter how much bug spray you apply I think you are going to get bit by mosquitos and chiggers. I have already spent 3 days in the area enjoying the Spring migration but missed spraying around my waist and chiggers ate a 4 inch section around my waist band where my shirt had become untucked. And of course I have received just a few mosquito bites. Thanks for watching the video but hope it didn't cause to many bad flashbacks.

@@Jeffswildlifeadventures The irony is that the 2022 migration was considered one of the weakest by the local birders. I have only missed 2 out of the last 22 migrations at Sabine Woods. My friends down there have told me that missing last year was not much of a loss. Everyone is hoping that 2023 bounces back to normal. If you make it back there is a good chance I will see you there. I don't know if you follow Sabine Woods year-round. But they currently have a Tropical Parula and a female Red-legged Honeycreeper being seen.
