    I think it was incredibly sweet of the judges to give a custom goodbye after each elimination.

    That word meaning round is something new and wow that is tough. I appreciate how it evolved over the years especially since I watch it every year.

  • @rootsOfMadness15
    @rootsOfMadness15 Жыл бұрын

    Many things that went wrong on this year's bee: - the backstage interview was unnecessary, they didn't give those children some space to process their loss, people who had participated in bees before know how hard it is to leave the stage just because of a word they didn't know or had not studied, and it seemed like the side stage couch was removed. - vocabulary rounds should be removed, EVER at the semifinals and finals round. Imagine losing at a *"SPELLING"* bee just because you don't know the meaning of a word, which only a few people know by heart. Not only is it unfair because of the varying difficulty of the word, but also the challenge it gives to those kids. Take for example, Kirsten Santos, who went out in the finals because she doesn't know the meaning of bastille, supposed she knew the French Revolution, there's just no other way a Grade 6 elementary student would guess that word. - the spell-off round is unjust and unreasonable. The essence of the Bee must focus on how the dictionary and etymology can help the children understand and learn the English language and the many languages of the world, not how many words you can spell under two minutes. It's also unfair to spellers who have speech impediments and hearing problems because they would need to muster more attention and energy in one word when someone like Harini-she deserves the title, don't get me wrong here-can fast talk those words with ease. - the awful cut between each spellers and ads is killing me. It started so long and now they were rushing to the end. The atmosphere then started to choke me lol - Interviewing Vikram after the contest is just soooo mean and inhumane. They know the kid is about to cry because he just lost a title, and Burton casually talks to him as if losing was just like any other day of his life. Give the spotlight to Harini instead. This is not to say the whole Bee was a mess, there are also some small details I applaud SNSB for doing so. They finally used a "harder" set of words from the dictionary, including botanical and some scientific words. I also love the affirmations and encouragement after some spellers misspelled their words. The whole Bee was a rollercoaster for sure, I hope they read reviews and recheck and reformat their rules because the Spelling Bee spirit is starting to die each year. Edit: - I forgot to add about the reporters. Please replace the woman beside Paul Loeffler, she sounds encouraging but she literally brings nothing to the table. At least, bring some facts or info about the word or the spellers.

    Spelling is as much knowing the meaning of words as knowing the letters in the words. I think the introduction of the vocabulary round is a necessary addition to a potentially unchanging and boring competition.

    those are the preliminary rounds. english is a finite language and the intellect and talent of the contestants in the past decade have shown that the old format isn't conducive to finding the SINGLE best speller in america that year. a final with 8 winners isn't crowning a winner - there needs to be some sort of differentiation among the cream of the crop. this new format is like an all-around competition - you have to be great at it all, not only guessing words in the normal round, but also an exceptional vocabulary (defn multiple choice) and rapid recall of known words (lightning final)
