    Great review. I’ve ordered the Spark RC Team and it’s arriving this month. Limited models and stock available in Aust right across the range. Really looking forward to the bike as my XC and marathon race bike. Syncross 2.0 wheelset will be the first thing that I swap out to save 0.5kg.

    Fantastic review in an awesome location that I’ll have to check out. I own a 2020 Spark 910 and absolutely love it. I personally prefer the look of the exposed shock and you’re right about the cables complicating servicing. Will be interesting to see if these trends continue with other brands.

    I got this bike on the weekend. It's exactly the kind of trail bike I want. The geometry provides a stable platform to provide confidence and the light weight and suspension provides a poppy and fun ride - nailing all the extra credit bits on singletrack with this bike is fun, rewarding and not scary. The centre of gravity feels very low which makes nailing berms super fun, can't wait to try it at a bike park. For me this is replacing last years Spark RC Team. The RC is a much faster and easier bike to pedal, much more focused, but as you would expect less confident and not at all playful. Still a very capable bike for trail riding though just not as fun but so far I think I can ride for longer on that bike. I wouldn't recommend the 910 as a XC race bike, if you are going to do a lot of marathon riding or racing I would recommend to go the RC route. (The RC World Cup AXS is probably the pick of the line up anyway) Since I am making this my only bike I wanted a bit more give in the design which the 910 provides. However, I think the wheels and tyres on this bike are poor. I believe the wheels are around 2kg and the tyres are 900g or so each. The bike feels much more heavier than the 1kg difference to the RC that it apparently is. (I probably should weigh everything). I think that makes the bike a bit harder to pedal fast compared to the RC. I intend to get some carbon xc wheels and lighter, better rolling tyres on this for long days and race days. I think it will help a lot. I also find the front end a bit imprecise. That may also be not just the wheels but the slacker front end. Still, early days, a lot more riding on it to do! Personally, I love twinloc. I use it all the time while riding. One cool thing about it is it lets you have a bit more sag in your suspension as you can just firm it up for pedalling giving you two bikes in one for downs and for ups. I love suspension with open/pedal/lock modes and having it on my handlebar is just ideal.

    Fantastic review! I know you kind of touched on this at the end when asked “who is this bike for”. I was just wondering how it fares as an all day/epic ride kind of bike. I currently have a hardtail XC bike (Scott scale 950) and looking to upgrade. I’ve found a Spark 940 locally, I’m just worried that this might be “too much bike” for me as someone who has never been to a trails park, but enjoys long XC rides. FYI I don’t race.

    I recently bought an spark 950 and i have to say that i am very satisfied.I used to have an xc hardtail race bike because i used to race but in the last 2 years i have been using it just for trail riding.I think that you will be very satisfied with the spark because even though it has 120mm of rear travel it is very efficient up to the point that i haven’t really noticed a difference between the spark and my xc bike when climbing but on the trail it’s a totally different beast.I’m even thinking on racing on this bike very soon and i think it will be amazing at xc racing.I truly believe that you will love this bike.Hope this helps!🤘🏼

    Awesome review FlowMTB ! I've appreciated each chapter ! I had the chance to test the Spark 910 for one week and I've been highly impressed by two things : the ton of motricity on technicals climbs and the confidence given on mini "enduro trails". I have the opportunity to buy the bike; or the RC Spark Team Issue AXS and I'm struggling with the choice. Living on a low mountain area , I have the choice to ride either on large fire road or technical singles tracks, with roots / rock garden. The only thing I did not appreciated wit the 910 was the fact that bike is not "juccy / alive" and my previous Flash. I have to push harder and longer to get results. That being said, should I go for the 910 and have everything "in the box", and try to have lighter / more efficient bike (wheels / tire) OR get the RC Team Issue AXS, enjoy the Sid 120mm 35 and the AXS, and try to make it more "trail / enduro" ? That's a tugh choice as both bikes are close and seems quite good, depending on the aspect ! Thanks again !

    Thanks for watching mate, glad you enjoyed the review! That's a good question about going for the Spark 910 or the Spark RC, as the two bikes are very similar. I honestly don't think you will go wrong either way, as you have options to modify each bike (and the head angle) to better suit your riding style and terrain. However, if you are planning on doing a lot of XC racing, then the Spark RC makes sense. It will be lighter and come with a more focussed build kit (narrower and lower handlebars, lighter wheels, faster tyres, lighter SID fork etc). It will be ready to race as it is without need for modifications. Then you could simply buy a second set of more aggressive tyres to put on for regular trail riding. If you're not interested in racing though, I think the Spark 910 would be the bike to go for. Funnily enough, I am currently turning our Spark 910 into a Spark RC - I have just fitted a DT Swiss XRC 1501 wheelset, Maxxis Rekon Race/Aspen tyres, a Syncros one-piece handlebar, and the smaller Nude 5 shock. Already the weight has come down to 11.3kg, though I'm also planning to fit a Fox 34 SC fork and a Transfer SL dropper post, which should bring the weight below 11kg. We will be following up on this project with a long-term review that will be published on the website in the near future. Keep an eye on flowmountainbike.com if you fancy checking it out. Hope that helps! [Wil]

    Great in depth review thanks guys. Not sure I feel the need to update my 2018 spark but saw one in the shop last week and personally I like it. Can you give us more feedback on the wicked Will tyres? My spark came with 120 tpi maxis rekon that only weigh 750g but unfortunately they won’t sell these direct to public, the 60 tpi are 100g more so was interested in the wicked will but most tests seem to indicate they are heavier than claimed weight. How do they rate traction wise against the rekon? Are they as fast rolling? I swapped to Vitoria barzo when my rekon wore out, about ready to swap out again.

    Cheers Andrew! We've got a bit more info about the Schwalbe Wicked Will tyres, including confirmed weights, in the full review if you fancy checking it out: flowmountainbike.com/post-all/scott-spark-2022/ Earlier this year we also received the Wicked Will tyres in both the Super Ground and Super Race casings, and you can see more confirmed weights here: flowmountainbike.com/post-all/flows-fresh-produce-brand-new-tyres-a-lightweight-e-mtb-and-high-tech-knee-pads/ I don't have extensive experience with the Maxxis Rekon, though it's a similar style of tyre to the Wicked Will. I've had positive experience with the WW so far, both on the Spark and on the front of the Canyon Lux Trail: flowmountainbike.com/tests/canyon-lux-trail-review-2022/ Sorry I can't provide you with a more detailed comparison mate, but hopefully there's some useful info for you there. Great review. I've got a 2019 Giant Trance Advanced Pro 29er 1, the green one you guys reviewed a couple of years ago. Would you say the new Spark 910 is a worthy upgrade and/or an improvement over the original Trance 29er? I tend to ride all day trails, a few XC races, including longer 50-100km races (I upgraded the trance to a few more carbon/lighter parts, bars, cranks, better cassette, tyres, etc). I presume the improved climbing of the new Spark 910 would help? How about the descending of the 910, would it be on par or better than the original Trance 29er? 65.8 deg (spark) VS 66.5 deg (trance). Thanks

  • @FlowMountainBikeYouTube

    @FlowMountainBikeYouTube

    2 жыл бұрын

    Cheers for watching and for the question mate! You'll definitely find the new Spark 910 to be an improvement over the original Trance 29er in terms of its climbing abilities and general efficiency. Out of those two bikes, I'd pick the Spark for tackling general trail riding, some XC racing and longer distance events. With a set of lighter tyres (and potentially wheels) it'd make a fine XC race bike. As for descending, the Maestro suspension design is a little more active compared to the single pivot flex stay design used on the Spark, and it's also a little more neutral under braking. That said, the Spark 910 offers quite a plush and comfortable feel in Descend mode, especially in the first half of the travel. Otherwise both are great handling bikes, and the geometry on the Spark is about as up to date as it gets. It may be worth bearing in mind that the original Trance 29 is coming up to 3 years old, so you could probably expect a new platform to be arriving pretty soon. Hope that helps! [Wil]

    Hey there Jean! Our test bike came fitted with a chainguide, which I understand is actually a legal requirement for bikes sold in Australia with a 1x drivetrain. There are two types of threaded nut for the main pivot - the standard one, and one with an extension for a chainguide to bolt onto. Both of these threaded nuts are specific to the Scott Spark, and our test bike came with both in the box. However, this may only be for bikes sold in Australia. Assuming you didn't get the other nut, I'm guessing you'll be able to order one through your Scott dealer. Hope that helps! [Wil]

  • @FlowMountainBikeYouTube

    @FlowMountainBikeYouTube

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the review! As I understand, the bottom of the frame has been reinforced quite heavily around the access hatch. This adds weight, but was done to bring stiffness levels back up to where they were without the hole. It's certainly a solid-feeling bike, and we've not had any issues with our test bike after six months of riding. It's worth acknowledging that Specialized has had big holes in its carbon downtubes (the SWAT storage) for many years now without issue. There are also a lot of alloy and carbon e-MTBs on the market that have much larger cutouts in their downtubes for batteries, so there's a lot of experience already out there. Hope that helps! [Wil]

    A very thorough hands-on review, so a big thumbs up. I have a 2020 rc. Just replaced the 80mm dropper to 160 (frame M) in order to max out usability of the bike. Picked german bikeyoke divine for the rotatable valve, this improves intube length. Also u guys ar not saying wont fit bigger than 120m, only it is limited. Question is how much. More or less compared to earlier models? Would be interested if this aspect would be investigated in the long term part. However 120 (or 80) would be enough for xc runs, my experience is the longer dropper run makes wonders in cornering, flowtrail segments..

  • @FlowMountainBikeYouTube

    @FlowMountainBikeYouTube

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the feedback mate, glad you enjoyed the video! Unfortunately I don't have a pre-2022 Spark on hand to check the seatpost insertion depth, and I don't believe Scott published that info in its geometry table in the past. It does for the 2022 model though, which you can see in our range overview article here: flowmountainbike.com/post-all/scott-spark-2022/ How much drop each frame size will accommodate will depend on the rider and their personal saddle height, as well as the model of dropper post. I have fairly short legs for my height, so 125mm in the Fox Transfer is the limit for me. I think the main issue is for riders who are between sizes who may be keen to upsize - there's a big jump in the length of the seat tube to the Large and XL frames, which will swallow some of the available dropper post travel. In comparison, there are bikes like the Pivot Trail 429 that have much shorter and straighter seat tubes in those bigger frame sizes, which allows them to accommodate a longer stroke dropper post. Whether it's needed on a short travel bike is up to the rider, but at least there's flexibility there in the first place. [Wil]

    Hey mate, I just bought the 940 with the ambition to upgrade both brakes, trigger and derailleur to shimano xt8120, sram gx trigger and sram gx derailleur. Let me tell you that its a big pain in the ass. The brakehose has to be changed and threading it through the frame is impossible. You need to dismount the rear shock and the bottom bracket to find the hole to lead the brakehose through the swing and into the crankcase. Buying and changing is still way cheaper then buying the spark 920 but a terrific amount of work. My advice: buy the one where you dont need to upgrade any parts

    Also the xt brakes clamp is broader then the mt501 clamp and you cannot fit the adapterplate from the twinlock on it. Seems scott has different adapterplates for the twinlock mount with a narrow and a broad groove.

    I ordered a Spark RC Team Issue and it will be delivered May 2022. From the factory that model doesn't have a dropper but I'm thinking on putting an aftermarket dropper on it. How does that work with the Twinloc levers as my bike won't have the dropper lever integrated on the Twinloc remote. Can I intergrate any I-spec EV remote on the Twinloc remote?

  • @FlowMountainBikeYouTube

    @FlowMountainBikeYouTube

    2 жыл бұрын

    That's a good question Michiel! I believe the dropper post lever is modular, so there may be an option for you to buy that separately from your Scott dealer, and bolt it onto the TwinLoc remote. Alternatively, you could buy the BikeYoke 2-By remote, which is a vertical over-the-bar lever that would sit next in between the grip and the Shimano brake lever; www.bikeyoke.de/en/2X.html I used this remote on a Merida Ninety-Six recently and quite liked how it worked. In some ways I think it's actually more functional, as it means your thumb is moving to different zones to activate the suspension versus the dropper post, so the action is more defined. You can see that setup in the Merida review here: flowmountainbike.com/tests/merida-ninety-six-rc-9000-review-2021/ [Wil]

    Hi there Patrick! You'll find quite a bit more info in the full review, which should help to answer some of your questions: flowmountainbike.com/tests/scott-spark-review-2022/ The weight of the test bike is listed in the video at 2:29 The Nude 5T shock only has adjustable air pressure, spring volume, rebound damping, and the 3-position compression/lockout. Technically the TwinLoc system is adjusting the shock's compression damping, but you only get those three settings (Descend, Traction Control & Lockout), so there's external no fine-tuning available for either low or high-speed compression damping. Wicked Will tyres are great! Nice XC tyre, reasonably quick and well suited to hardpack and flowy singletrack. The Canyon Lux Trail we recently tested also has a Wicked Will up front, and we went into some detail about its performance in that review too if you fancy checking it out: flowmountainbike.com/tests/canyon-lux-trail-review-2022/ Hope that helps Patrick! I have the Scott Spark RC Pro and just stripped it down for a rebuild. The shock is not difficult to work on and can be released with 3 tx30 bolts. Even the headset routing was less of a challenge than I thought because I removed the dropper lever on the Twinlock allowing it to then pass through the top headset bearing. You do have to rebleed the rear break though but that is quickly done. Some care needs to taken on removing and re assembling the main axle for the swing arm but once you understand what is going on it is quite easy to work on.

I would like to maybe one day take it to my small local bike park. Do you think that the 900 series will lose much time compared to the rc model in a xc-race or is it more worth getting the more trail oriented 900 model?

  • @FlowMountainBikeYouTube

    @FlowMountainBikeYouTube

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey there Filip! We haven't yet ridden the Spark RC, but for the most part it's the same bike with a 120mm travel fork, faster tyres and a lighter build kit. This means whether you went for the Spark RC or Spark 900, you'd have options to tweak the setup down the line, as it's quite an adaptable bike. Of course if you're really sensitive to weight, the Spark RC is still going to be the lighter of the two options. So if you're serious about racing, then it's the obvious choice out of the two. I've really enjoyed riding the Spark 910 test bike though, and I'd happily race it at our local club series. I'd likely change the tyres to something lighter and speedier - like a Schwalbe Racing Ralph/Ray combo. And with the TwinLoc system, you've still got access to that firm Traction Control mode, which is ideal for climbing and sprinting on flatter sections of the racecourse. The appeal of going for the Spark 900 is that outside of racing, you've got a more versatile and comfortable bike for everyday XC and trail riding. I've put a bit more info about the Spark 900 vs Spark RC in the full review, along with detailed comparisons with some of the Spark's main competitors. You can check it out if you like: flowmountainbike.com/tests/scott-spark-review-2022/ Hope that helps Filip! [Wil]

    Hey there Robert! It's certainly not an overly flash wheelset, but our experience of the Syncros Silverton 2.0 so far has actually been quite positive. Confirmed weight is 1,956g (including valves and tape), so there's room to save weight there for sure. That said, they're quite fast-rolling wheels with smooth hubs, and the low-profile alloy rims offer a really nice and compliant feel. It's certainly much nicer compared to some of the overly-stiff carbon rims that can come on bikes around this price point. The only real downside is that rear hub engagement is quite slow. If this were my bike, I'd likely look at getting myself a set of lightweight race wheels, and keeping the stock Syncros wheels for training and everyday trail riding. As for the dropper post, that's fair enough - the seat tubes are pretty long and seatpost insertion depth is limited with this new frame design. Personally I find the 125mm drop on the Medium size to be a good fit for an XC bike, though it's worth noting that the Large & XL frames will come with a 150mm drop as standard. [Wil]

The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of KZread. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!
