Bought a CB500X yesterday. Have been riding bigger bikes but following your review i tried one. These little 500cc (471 to be precise) are outstanding. After my 1,5 hour test ride i was really impressed just how engaging these little bikes are. For anyone thinking these are gutless - try one , don’t expect 1250GS power, but will certainly surprise you. And the suspension is great over poor roads

You are so right, it’s so much more fun to pin the throttle on a 300 or 500 and look down and your not doing a suicidal 120 mph . You can slow it down real easy from fun speed and dip it into a corner and it doesn’t feel heavy. Smaller bikes are a lot more fun and safe

For the money, you can't go wrong with this bike (or any of the other CB500s). Specially with the upgraded brakes, forks - and not a small issue - the Road 5 tires (I've got a set on both my bikes), which are nothing short of excellent. If you're on a budget or want a second bike for commuting/errands/quick morning rides, it surely looks like a keeper. Specially with the legendary reliability and excellent fuel mileage. Looks great, now, too. Very interested in hearing about how it fares on longer motorway trips. Thanks for a great review!

Back when these first came out I tried all 3 variants. I was expecting to like the X more as an adventure bike, but the F was by far the best of the 3 - sharper steering, nicer ride, better feeling suspension and noticeably lighter than the R, and especially the X. One bonus is you can rev the hell out of the engine and get a respectable amount of go, without hitting 100mph. For £6K retail they’re really quite good and a lot more character (and far better styling) than the NC750.

I've just had a new X on test and I was impressed too. Far better suspension [and seat!] than the NC750X and not appreciably slower but it's achieved by running some pretty low gearing and that can make it a touch busy on the motorway. I found the NC more characterful with it's 270 degree crank but heavier and that couple with the weaker front brake makes it feel a bit more cumbersome round town. In short for local, or longer slower hops then I'd take the CB, but for longer, faster journeys the NC makes sense and uses no more fuel.

Great review, thank you. Just back into biking after a 5/6yr lay off. Used to ride a VTX1800 and Guzzi 750 Breva but bit old now (70) and wanted something easy and fun to ride. Bought a two year old CB500F a few weeks ago from a Honda in exact spec I wanted (could get the colour I wanted in the new version, sadly). Really pleased you mentioned the throttle snatch at very low speed manoeuvring. I found the same and took it back for checking with no improvement. Wasn't sure if it was me or not. Cleared up now thanks to you. Very grateful. Still a great, fun bike.

I have not even gone over 75mph since i had it but there is plenty about it for what i need. Not much fun on a motorway but its a 500cc streetbike so expeect the wind to tear you a new one. On more urban, country, rural roads though, its great value for money.

I have the 2022 variant of both the 500X and 500F and the F is so much more fun to ride around town. Being a taller bike, the X feels top heavy and somewhat more precarious; it definitely requires more attention. It would be nice to have more power on the F for freeway riding; however, it does keep up on American highways.

I’ve got a cb500 2019 as my first big bike. Own a street triple s. And tried the trident. After a year and 4K miles I’m wanting to swap the cb500 for something bigger but then I ride it and enjoy it as it’s so pleasant and easy to ride and I’m keeping the Striple mint and fair weather only. I found the trident a bit small after the street triple. Think the cb500 will give you amazing value and is a nice first bike. I would skip the trident unless you have a good deal or ample cash I find the Honda to be very manoeuvrable and very easy to ride at slow speeds.

I''ve got a 500x, but to be honest any of the Honda 500cc machines are good. They are at a great sweet spot of price, performance and reliability. I use mine for commuting and touring - probably would have gone for the F rather than the x if I wasn't wanting to tour. Overall, Honda doing what they do best - good honest bike. Funny to think that 500x cc is considered a "small to mid" size bike and that 47HP is slow...50 years ago this would have been a beast of a machine!

Well the z400 beats it in every way basically & for much lies money so what’s the point ? The motor is a relic (and not in the good way) on a old heavy frame. Hard to justify. If the motor was special in some way for example if it was a triple or a 500cc inline 4 then that would change everything…but it’s not and choosing a bike based on what it would’ve been compared to 60 years ago is a fools errand, more-so if also, ignoring its’ contemporary competition.

I bought it because the bike I really wanted; the new Hornet, isn't available Stateside yet (will it ever be..?) and the two are quite similar in size, weight, ergos, styling a.s.o. and I thought it'd be an easy switch to make down the road (see what I did there?) I'm in my late 50's and have dreamed of owning a bike since I was 8 or 9 and now that I finally do; I think I'm happy to stay with the 500! Of course the 750 has more poke but I really can't imagine needing more than I have now; thinking I'll stick with the little F, and mod it as I go to be my perfect bike. I'd love to fix the snatchiness on the initial throttle, for sure.

I was considering buying the Honda CB500F that is much improved. However, I ended up buying a Honda CB300R (2022) because of the Neo Cafe Racer look, it is much lighter and narrower and has a shorter wheel base so filtering through traffic is easier and it is better on fuel consumption. The Honda CB500F is probably the most sensible "big bike" to buy. I think the CB300R is underrated. I think they should make a CB500R Neo Cafe Racer style motorbike. The ultimate sensible motorbike is the Honda CB650R in my opinion.

I picked this bike up bout a month ago (my first bike) Very much enjoy it as a commuter, super comfortable but as a fairly large man (6 ft 2 220lb) on the highways around here its quite light and the large truck turbulence blows ya around quite a bit. Exhaust could be louder too but eventually after market will solve that

Yeah I've got the 18 cb500f, really regret not getting the cbr. But I really have a hard time deciding if I want anything bigger, the R7, Cbr650r and maybe a cbr version of the hornet are interesting. But I also don't see why a new cbr couldn't tickle my fancy. It's really an amazing bike with which you can halfway open the beans fully, in a half legal manner. Honda could make my decision simple if they dropped a 270° crank in the 500, I'd then get the cbr500r, call it a day and hopefully ride it forever. Kawasaki's zx4r also looks really appealing, but also at ~90hp the cbr650r is at the same space. But also offers a bit more safety headroom for longer highway rides, because it should technically be working slightly less 🤔.
