2022 Energica EXPERIA - Electric Sports Tourer

Фильм және анимация

This week James is testing the brand new Energica Experia, the latest offering from the manufacturer. This an Africa Twin equivalent which is designed as a tourer, has DC rapid charging for quick top ups but more importantly, has new layout which drops the centre of gravity and makes this their best handling bike.

    A sport touring bike doesn't really need a lot of power but torque, which this fantastic Experia clearly delivers in spades.

    Thanks James, this is a great illustration of what the bike is and what it can do. So important that you emphasised how good it feels to ride, as the extra weight compared to most petrol bikes could be perceived as a problem, until you appreciate how agile and light it feels. Still a problem parking and super-slow manoeuvres but the reverse gear will help with parking. When you say it has "less power", and mention that various aspects have "improved", what are you comparing this to; the Ego? I think this bike is a quantum leap in long distance, comfortable, fun, electric cruising, and I would certainly need a pee or a coffee well before I had to worry about the remaining range, and as it charges so quickly, as long as I plan my pitstop near a charger, there's no downtime. I would seriously consider selling my Zero DSR once these bikes appear on the secondhand market. FYI my last decent road trip took me 1200kms round the top of New Zealand's South Island, and cost me the equivalent of £3 in fuel, with a free coffee thrown in! All force to the eMoto! Keep up the good work mate!

    My dream bike is this Experia, but I cannot afford it yet, so ordered a Zero S ZF14.4kW, its the lightest without charge tank so only 185kg. I hope I can go on a 240km trip this summer if I ride at low speed (70km/h) and custom mode at lowest torque setting....

    Great road test of this new Energica. Im on my third Zero so now SRF 15.6+Kwh, clearly I like the Zeros. Despite 2 broken belts at 2,000 miles on both the SRFs, I love the sound of the belt drives, replacement belts Ive fitted did 7,000 miles+ and not even needed adjustment. I use the Gates phone app (listens to belt frequency) and the Klickit belt gauge plus as an engineer /bike builder I like to think Ive some mechanical sympathy so make what you will of that but I can fit belts no problem.. Zero seems to have optimised the electric motor performance envelope to sit between 30 and 90 mph and it feels like a power band, my guess is Energica have done the same, ideal for UK roads. The 2022 SRF will do 110 miles hard use, 120 at sane speeds and an all time fluke did 160 miles bimbling about country back roads and towns. Ill be trying a Energica in the next few weeks, its difficult to translate EV power to ICE. I also ride Suzuki GSXR 1000 K5 at 162BHP it has one of the best throttle response of any ICE bike its very linier go hesitations but it cant compete with the EV bike is so good within its envelope it seems faster, maybe it is but either way its the Zero I keep using. It may be this is the best Energica yet, dont know till I try but Ive given up looking at power and torque figures till Ive test ridden

  • @slartybartfarst9737

    @slartybartfarst9737

    Жыл бұрын

    @@musk-eteer9898 Getting hot is a function of the motors operation, the more load the more heat. As its air cooled the bike must be moving and not under continuous full load to keep a lid on the heat ceiling but what Ive described is normal use cases. I give my by some full on acceleration busts but its simply not possible on UK roads to sustain full load for any period of time that could generate sufficient heat to do any damage and a hot 3 phase motor is nothing unusual. Does your dash motor temperature gauge go red ? If you dont have the gauge load it up. A hot motor is nothing to be concerned about, its the physics.

    Thanks for this review! Since i mainly do touring on a Zero SR/F, I'm very much interested in the Experia and the DSR/X, I tried both, did a review on the latter and still hesitate. I would tend to say that the Experia has better handling, probably due to it's weight that - this time - seems lowers than the DSR/X

    Great review James. Your video, scenery, music, and commentary are the best. The Experia is expensive, but it has to be the best electric bike for long trips. I will stick with my Zero DSR, but I sure would like to have the Experia for taking long trips on paved roads.

    I’ve got an EV car and a K1600 bike so this is in my area I suppose. Unfortunately it’s a bit steep on the price front yet and could do with just a bit more range. I reckon another 30 mile range and 4K cheaper and they could have a good market for it. Time will tell

    The range is not an exact thing, varies by your settings and how you ride. I'm sure press bikes are all set to track mode (sport) and with maximum regen (max engine braking). If going for 'range', us current owners simply set our bike to a lower regen and use a more conservative mode like eco or rain. You could easily pull another 30 miles driving back roads and keeping it below 70 I bet.

    Weird that you'd say this competes with the Africa Twin, which is an adventure tourer with a 21" front. The Experia has a 17" front, like my Concours 14. I'd consider giving up my adventure bike and my C14 to get one of these with a 19" or 21" front and an off-road capable suspension.

    As an st1300 owner there are a few things I wish were different, first off like there’s a motorway tour range is really important for a tourer 130 miles motorway is just not enough until we get a tour range hitting 200 highway motorway 180 fully loaded up with luggage and pillion is still a deal breaker of me , the other really annoying thing is the motor noise I’m sure they can engineer that out of it and use a multi use speaker/horn for low speed sub 25 mph it reminds me of a really annoying dog chew cranked up it’s horrible.also I think they need to work on the power delivery allowing a software change and that power band hitting at 50 nowadays will lose your license quicker than You can say “that Damm rabbit” around london , another wish is decent paint colours than a sea of bland grays

    Hub motors create extra mass where you don't want it and are limited in capacity. A separate motor is more powerful and doesn't add undesired mass to the rear wheel. That's why all high performance electric motorcycles use a central motor. Energica has a neat additional trick in there, the motor spins backwards to counter the centrifugal force of the tires - making the bike more nimble.
