2022 Ducati Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak - Is It Worth The Extra Cost?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

New from Ducati for 2022 is its Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak ($28,995). This is a variation of Ducati’s Multistrada V4 adventure motorcycle, which debuted for 2021. It’s positioned as an adventure-sport model with a 17-inch forged front wheel instead of the standard model’s 19-inch hoop; think along the lines of BMW’s S 1000 XR.
--
The Pikes Peak is still powered by Ducati’s fabulous 1,158cc V-4. We really like this engine, which is based on the Panigale V4 superbike powertrain we fell in love with many years ago. It has a lot of power, loads of character, creamy smoothness, a handsome sound, and no annoying vibration. It does suck the fuel, however, so it’s a good thing Ducati fitted a nearly 6-gallon fuel tank, so you’re going to have some capacity.
Suspension-wise, this Multi is fitted with Öhlins semi-active suspension versus the Marzocchi semi-active components on the Multistrada V4 S. We didn’t get a chance to truly whale on this bike during its official US press introduction, due to rain and slippery road surfaces, but based on our experience with the Panigale V4 S, the suspension package almost certainly kicks butt.
Ducati shifted the ergonomics package to make it more road-focused. The handlebar is a tad lower, the rider rearsets are slightly higher and more rearward. This provides more cornering clearance for those who want to try and scrape the footpegs on asphalt. Realistically, this subtle ergonomic change equates to a more demanding riding style, so we prefer the lower pegs and wider bar of the standard Multistrada V4 S. Even in standard configuration the Multi is a capable sport-oriented road bike, so it’s almost overkill to have more aggressive ergonomics.
As usual, this vehicle has a very nice, bright 6.5-inch color TFT display, though there’s a lot going on with the menu system and the layout in general and it takes a while to figure it all out. The switch gear could also be simplified; while we appreciate the switch gear’s backlighting, which is nice during night rides, there’s an unusual amount of buttons. Ducati would do well to simplify the user interface.
We do, however, really like the adaptive cruise control feature. It’s essentially a radar-based cruise control system, which allows the bike to easily keep pace with the vehicle ahead. We’ve used this setup before on the Multistrada V4 and found it exceptionally handy, functioning easily and intuitive in its use. Great job, Ducati.
This bike also uses the same front brake pad material as the V4 S Panigale superbike. We like the Multistrada V4′s original brakes, but these are better, at least in theory. Either way, owners will be getting a great braking package.
It’s also worth noting that Ducati offers three-level ABS adjustment, allowing riders to tune the ABS character to their own preference or to the road surface. The ABS programming is highly advanced, which should be appreciated by pro-level riders.
Overall, the Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak is another really nice motorcycle from Ducati. We love the engine and its surpassing smoothness, and we absolutely love the handling. Still, the Pikes Peak is priced $4,900 higher than the standard Multistrada, and while that includes up-spec Öhlins suspenders and forged 17-inch rims, anyone who’s not a pro-level road rider is not really getting a whole lot more performance. Realistically, the standard Multi performs so well on the asphalt that it meets the needs of 99 percent of riders, who could then ride their bikes off-road too, if they wished. So, for our money, magnificent as the Pikes Peak inarguably is, we’d buy the standard Ducati Multistrada V4 S.

Not sure why they put a "1" on the bike instead of a "5"... I'd probably have to fix that if I ever take the v4 Multi plunge (probably won't happen unless they put a desmo v4 into one though).

I think a lot of people will buy this specifically because it isn't the adventure dad model V4S. As I am replacing a Panigale V4S and already own the 1200 DVT Enduro ...the Pikes Peak seems like a great option being much sportier than my Enduro, more road suitable than my prev Panigale and allegedly a hoot on track.

A lot of people will buy the PP because the average Ducati customer always go after the top of the model range. And 240kg is the opposite of a "hoot on track". Race mode is pure Ducati marketing bs.What you describe does exist tho, it's the SreetFighter V4S. If anything Ducati should leave the Multi as a touring and slap the V4 in their SuperSport range. I'll tell you what, I just sold my '21 Multi V4S after only 1 year of ownership. I thought the 19" would be bad, but it turns out Ducati did an incredible job at that. On the other hand, I thought the V4 would be a masterpiece. And it turns out it is the most boring Ducati engine I have ever riden. Completely lacking any emotion. Picture the V4 you know from your Panigale, but instead of going bonkers above 11k rpm, it just stops there. Some call it smooth, but to me that was the dealbreaker. I dont think it made me smile once. What does make me smile is the people buying the PP thinking they are getting a track-ready do-it-all bike. The days of the Multi 1200 being a superbike on stilts are long gone. The V4 is well born as a touring bike, and the PP wont change that.

@@JeanOi I agree somewhat. I’ll never track it or never thought it was a track bike. I have a KTM 890 Duke R and a KTM SMC 690 R. Which would be much more fun on track. Trading a KTM Superduke GT in for the PP. I want all bikes to be the funnest bike in their respective genre/purpose. The PP allows me to have a practical wife bike” that works well for short day trips-and will still allow me to off load wife and bags and take a little on backroads rip at our up north cottage. The “race” designation is whatever…. The “race” pipe plus “race” mapping is alleged by those who have done it-to free up the To motor operate as intended without wheezing around Euro 5 specs-not optimal. It’s too much money. It’s ok. I have more money. The PP will tote me plus my wife and she don’t know or care I bought a “hooligan” adventure bike-for ME! All good. I have had and. I longer will ever have any 19” wheel bike. No gravel roads in our future. No Super Sport either. Or Tuono for that matter-Had one. Pretty cramped for my previous broken neck to manage. The Superduke GT is very goof but not quite optimal for two-up. Those who have ridden/tested both V4’s including the PP say it is very different. Hope they are right. If not I’ll sell it and try again-but what would I buy?

@@_Jaded_ It is far from a "copy-paste ready answer". It is my opinion, as someone who ordered a Multi V4S in March 2021, had to eagerly wait until June 2021 to take delivery because of shipping delays and subsequent delays for the engine recall and ended-up keeping the bike for 10 months. And unlike many of the reviews out there that are praising the bike, my opinion is unbiased. Unlike journalists that are kindly invited on Ducati's dime to fly across the globe on the best roads ands tracks, and who wouldn't dare say anything bad in fear to get black-listed for future launch, I was making monthly payment and can be far more critical in regard to what I'm getting for my money. My conclusion is that the Multi V4 is the least exciting bike of their range right now. And I dont think the PP will change that. Paradoxically it has to be the most versatile bike they ever did. They really created a jack of all trades that sure enough is a master of none, but is pretty darn good at a lot of things. But IMO, they did it at the cost of fun and excitment. It is fast (as any bike with 170hp would be), smooth and confidence inspiring. I was probably faster in curves than my Hypermotard, but surely the fun factor was much lower. Go to your dealer, ask for test ride and make your own opinion. As it is now, if I wanted to jump back on a Multi, I would probably go for an early 1200, save a bunch of cash, and retain most of the fun factor from the 1198 engine.

my stock 1250GSA (2022) still has traction/wheelie control intervene in 2nd/3rd gear. The 2 cylinder is so torquey and awesome. Turning is amazing. I've taken it to the most extreme offroading it can handle. I feel like I want a multistrada but don't want to lose any of what the BMW offers and could easily imagine I'm on a sport tourer if I want. Standing up and riding is the icing on the cake and no mention of standing comfort is a huge tragedy. I can ride at 70mph standing (turning my head as well) and it's a different thing than sitting.

If you're a GSA fan you'll not want the Pikes Peak... the V4S would be much closer to what you're saying you like. The Multi if anything feels like MORE of a sport tourer than the GS... more power, more tarmac capable. You mention power as something you value - well I rent the GS when I travel to Germany because I like how it's LOWER power is less likely to get me into trouble with the Polizei compared to renting a Multi or an XR (IMO the XR is the actual BMW competition for the Multistrada... not the GS). Where it falls short of the GS is when you go off tarmac... the GS's low CG makes the bike a lot more confidence inspiring on dirt (though all heavyweight bikes are pretty limited offroad). Touring comfort wise I'd give a SLIGHT nod to the GS also... though I've ridden my Multi on 12000 mile tours with multiple 16 hour days in a row in comfort - the GS is just a bit better.

So I think you're selling the Pikes Peak a little short on the $4k upcharge from the V4S Sport. The Pikes Peak has forged Marchesini wheels, single sided swingarm, sportier tires, Akrapovic exhaust, a MotoGP livery, Panigale brakes, track mode and as you mentioned Ohlins EC suspension. This IMO completely justifies the upcharge. Of course I believe it as I paid the extra to get the Pikes Peak in lieu of the V4S Sport. Forgot to mention carbon fiber front fairing and front fender.

Good call on the wheels & swingarm, don’t think he mentioned it. Brakes aren’t an upgrade, V4S also have four piston Brembo Stylema & V4S Sport comes w/ same Akra can. Plus you loose heated grips & panniers if you go Pikes Peak Vs V4S or Sport. But that front wheel, especially w/ Ohlins will be quicker on track if you don’t need bags & windshield to tour. It's a great bike but not better in EVERY way... it's quite a bit heavier and is dyno'ing (real world numbers) at or even a bit below the XR (Ducati generally overstate power, BMW generally understate it)... so it will likely be slower. Having said that... if you're not an inline 4 fan (I'm more of a v2/v4 fan) then the XR may not excite you. (it's quick but lacks that S1000R BALLISTIC top end that makes my brain completely forget I don't like inline 4's)

It is definitely a big machine but comfortable, however, I was surprised at how much power it had and how effortlessly it took corners. Easily on par in both speed and handling as my SD. It s VERY expensive but I have to admit, it gives you 2 bikes in one and neither is a compromise like others. It's really not that crazy price in the grand scheme of things, you pay 7-8k over what you'd pay for an S1000XR from BMW, and whilst I'm partial to the BMW, this bike is just as amazing and has a fair bit more tech. It's not at all crazy when you think about it in respect to cars or even bicycles, you're often paying thousands more for objectively worse cars and yet it's completely justified. Same with bicycles you can pay 3k for a bike, or pay 6k for a slightly better one. In my eyes, the Multistrada IS easily worth double the price of a Tracer 9 because it is more than 2x as good. And when you compare the fact that you're getting the absolute bleeding edge for the price of an entry level hatchback? Literally a no brainer. Obviously not everyone can afford an entry level hatchback, not a lot of people care enough about bikes to pay that much, but as for value for money, this is definitely in the realm of acceptable. Noone complains about Ferraris costing 150k+ even though they are no better than a 60k Merc or BMW

Pikes Peak isn’t a more “sports tourer” version compared to V4S, it is more “sport” focused for those that will do track days. Benefit is front wheel transition & Ohlins, but to actually tour it removes: heated grips, side panniers, & larger windscreen at higher $. Add htd grips for another $388 & panniers for $988. While Pikes Peak is great marketing flash for Ducati, not clear what this bikes purpose would really be. For sport tourer, go V4S Full & if you really want 17” & more sport, Streetfighter exists & would smoke PP.

You are fundamentally correct. Buying one anyways. Would never buy a Panigale or a 19" wheel bike. Went through three 19: bikes (KTMs) and determined that. Trading in a Superduke GT, as it just a tad TOO sporty in riding position and pillion accommodations. I rode a V4 S and was sold--if this was a bit sportier--it would be perfect. Pikes Peak will be. Two up touring 90%. Then drop the bags and wife off--turn it to "race" (with racing exhaust, mapping and any power-nannies removed) then shred some back roads. It's two bikes. Looks great, too.

The wrong person was selected for this review ! lots of bikes have illuminated switch gear .WOW not very informed reviewer . The opinions from this guy turn me off. words don't really count for much if you don't know the market. Opinion doesn't replace fact.

Lets cut to the chase. Is it Fun?: Yes Is it finnicky?: Yes Can it actually go on RTW trips?: Doubt it Can problems/failures be solved on the go: Doubt it Will buyers ride it to at least 100,000km/miles ever? : 99% No Will buyers store it under covers and only use it for coffee run to Starbucks: Heck Yeah! Odds of seeing one with knobby tires and mud at a dirt track near you?: Wait for hell to freeze over 1st. Opinions based on what i observe daily in a excessively rich S.E Asian country, where Ducati riders tend to not even know where is their battery located or what is the correct amount of oil for their engine. Ducati is becoming like Ferrari, a symbol of posers.
