This is a Motormouth couple car review of the updated 2022 Chevrolet Equinox compact SUV. What’s new? This updated 2022 Chevrolet Equinox gets an updated front end with a new grille, headlights, front and rear bumpers and a new RS model. It has a sportier style with black 19” wheels, black exterior accents and black upholstery with red stitching. The top Premier trim has body colour door handles with chrome surround and two interior colour combinations including, jet black perforated leather and jet black with Maple Sugar. The Chevy Equinox comes with a 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission, 170 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. FWD and AWD options are available. We are driving the LT AWD model in Blue Glow Metallic with a jet black cloth interior. It comes standard with a 7” touchscreen, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a manual driver and passenger seat, power liftgate, heated steering wheel, LED headlights and 17” wheels. Our test model has a few extras like 18” wheels and the True North Edition package for over $3,700 CAD which includes, a panoramic sunroof, 8” touchscreen with navigation, front and rear park assist and blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert. Price as tested, $36,643 CAD. This Chevy Equinox gets a great quality and reliability score from JD Power of 81/100. The Chevrolet Equinox is a spacious compact SUV with plenty of front legroom but competitors like the Tucson, Forester, RAV4 and Rogue all offer more front row space. The second row seats do not recline or side, but are very comfortable but one area the Equinox falls short is in cargo capacity behind the second row and overall cargo space; it is one of the smallest in this class. The Equinox FWD model starts at $26,498 CAD/$25,800 USD, AWD $28,898 CAD/$27,400 USD, LT FWD $28,598 CAD/$26,900 USD, LT AWD $30,998 CAD /$28,500 USD, RS FWD $30,100 USD, RS AWD $33,798 CAD/$31,700 USD, Premier FWD $31,000 USD and Premier AWD $34,798 CAD/$32,600 USD

Man! The hatred for GM, Chevy, and the Equinox in this comment section! Well, I don’t hate it. This is actually my favorite airport rental vehicle. Everything in it just works well and is very easy to use. No weird quirks, no hunting through touchscreen menus for basic functions, just get in and drive. Handles well. The engine is a bit weak, but press it and it will go. Yeah, it has a rental car interior. So what? It’s functional and has all the gizmos I need. About once or twice a year I consider buying one. Haven’t yet, but might. Especially since big rebates are back on these (at least in Southern California). I’ve owned cars from almost all the major carmakers. After many positive and negative experiences, I value function over form. I think of the Equinox as a good appliance family vehicle, the automative equivalent of a reliable fridge or microwave or washing machine.

I was in a fully loaded one of these recently (a few days ago) and I have to agree with your overall impressions on this CUV. It was quieter than I expected, not really underpowered, smooth over most tarmac imperfections and pretty damn sharp looking. It would look great in almost any driveway, especially for it’s price. Thanks for the video.

I had one as a company vehicle. Nearly 3 years and 142,000 km without a single mechanical problem. It was also great on fuel. A competent vehicle overall, nothing exciting or groundbreaking in any way. It was heaps more reliable than the Hyundai Tucson I had before the equinox.

What was supposed to happen in those 140k km? That's no mileage, basically a brand new car. Cars don't even show any visual wear either before 400k km, and it's still minor by then. I don't and neither anyone else I know who bought a brand new car ever had to repair a single thing in a car from the last 2 decades before 300k km or actually ever. Maybe a single minor part. Never used warranty just maintenance. But those cars are German so I guess that's different quality and an issue free 500k km is just taken for granted and expected with those.

We just picked up the RS model fully loaded and yes heated seats at a later date. But GM gave us 13 months of the Chevy app to start and lock your vehicle. Also GM gave 3 months of Onstar as well. This is my wife’s vehicle it is very comfortable rides very nice as you said. It drives quite well for the 1.5 engine as well as very good gas mileage. For the size of the Equinox it works well with all 3 of us to go anywhere. This weekend in Calgary and 340 km and still above half a tank too. Nice review too

We've had ours (1.5L) for two years. That's two NW Ontario Canadian winters. It hasn't made it through ONE full winter yet. First year (less than 5 months old, January 2021) the intercooler/PCV froze up driving to work (100km commute each way), throwing engine codes and going into limp mode on hills. In and out of the shop for two months. Finally the front AND rear crank seals blew out because on top of the freezing, the waste gate solenoid was sticking and it overboosted. Fancy electronic grille shutters were installed. By the time we got it back from the engine replacement, it was April. Fast forward to the following January (2022), first drive to work after Christmas break, hit a hill, check engine light, limp mode ... deva vu. Take it back in, froze up AGAIN. The fancy active shutters failed in less than a year. The new warranty fix was a $27 fabric cold front to cover the grille physically. Something I had asked for almost a year earlier and was told they didn't have. Parked the Equinox for the rest of the winter and drove my Santa Cruz until it warmed up. Other than that, it hasn't been bad - but that is pretty MAJOR! We literally don't trust us to get us to work if it's below -23. Around here, that's November through March. Not great for a commuter vehicle. Gas mileage has been good though, as high as 6.3L/100km in the summer. I found it reasonably peppy, but far from sporty. It feels like driving punishment vs. my Santa Cruz. The rubber band automatic is a world apart from the exceptionally quick shifts of the Hyundai DCT. For what it is ... it's okay, but we're looking forward to getting rid of it. I would take a Tucson over this ANY day. But when we bought, the current gen Tucson wasn't out and the old one was smaller than we wanted. Next time around, I'm heavily leaning towards the Ioniq 5. It's about time to go electric on our next vehicle.

Keep up with oil changes and general maintenance and they'll be reliable. My wife has a 2020 and I'm not impressed with it, but surprisingly the 2022/2023 Equinox is on my list but it will have to be the fully loaded RS for the sporty look in and out. Of course I love the Blazer but I need a little better gas mileage and the Equinox gets 31 hwy which works for me.

Thanks for sharing this, I am a little surprised how negative most of the comments are. We drive so many vehicles a year and honestly, the Equinox handles really well for an SUV. Of course, it doesn't have a great interior, many brands have passed the Equinox in this area, but for the drive and the way it handles, it's good for this class. I also think it's an inexpensive option for a family that is on a tight budget. The AWD model starts at under $30,000 CAD.

Maybe I was unlucky, but my wife had a 2011 Equinox and it was a nightmare. Oil changes were all done on time and I followed the service manual to get everything else done when gm recommended. The engine started burning oil and needed to be topped off weekly. A lot of things on the interior were constantly failing. All the window regulators were replaced under warranty with less than 30k on it. Drive side one started to fail again later on. Some of the speakers failed and were replaced under warranty. They failed again and I had to pay to replace them. They started to fail again before we finally dumped it.

Thanks for another GM review. Except for going to airport rental lots, I almost forgot Equinox still available other than fleet sales. Even if Jeep's build quality and long-term reliability aren't "supposedly" to be as good as Chevrolet and Ford, I still would rather have a Cherokee than both the Equinox and Escape. Cherokee's ride quality is superb, exactly like a premium SUV does. In the meantime, I would stick with a CX-5/50, CR-V, RAV4, Rogue and Forester. Even Tiguan which isn't known for long-term reliability have a much better driving experience than the Equinox. That's despite it will have plenty of GM factory rebate.

Four years ago, my mother needed a new car. I sent her various reviews to scour through so she could learn about various vehicles before going to the dealerships to help narrow down some choices. I told her to ignore where vehicles ended up in their comparison list and focus more on what she wanted and what met her needs most. Despite finishing towards the bottom of the comparison tests, the vehicle that suited her best (and the one she bought) was the 2018 Equinox. She bought a top trim FWD model with the 1.5L turbo engine and all the safety features. It's been trouble free and has been a great choice for her. It's also made in Ingersoll Ontario, about 20 minutes east of London.

Windshield wiper issue common issue that had a part that failed should have been a recall IMO but wasn't too expensive. Second was a sensor third issue this wear was sensor/air related part that was about $1700 to fix. So sum it up i spent 2500 ish in about 7.years plus oil and tire. Brakes lasted to first maintenance around 80 thousand miles I'm considering this car again but will consider other options. We had a chance to see the '24 at the Chicago auto show. I will just mention one statistic in favor of the Equinox. So far in 2022, it is running in 2nd place in terms of sales in the compact SUV category. Behind the RAV4 but ahead of the CRV and Rogue. Now the pandemic and chip shortages have messed up sales for all brands, so maybe that statistic is not really meaningful. But before the pandemic, Equinox sales were also very competitive, usually #3 in the category. And if you add in the sales of its twin from GMC, then it was often at #2. My point is that these things actually sell quite well despite the hate. And if you look on Edmunds and other sites, owners generally seem quite happy with it. So, yeah, it’s not an exciting or luxurious vehicle or anything. Just basic transportation that generally works well and at an affordable price.

They're comfortable but I really have to wonder about long term reliability. I'd have to get a good discount which probably isn't happening in the current market. We had a 2017 Equinox as a family car before getting a minivan. It was comfortable and got us where we needed to go but started making me nervous about reliability around 100k miles. I was totally a happy customer though BECAUSE we got it super cheap off lease. We also had a 2011 Chevy Cruze with the 1.4L turbo that we got super cheap off lease. I hope the 1.5 is better than the 1.4 version from 2011. The power was fun when we bought it but the turbo lost all oomph by 50k miles. The turbo didn't fail to the point where the car wouldn't work so we never replaced the turbo but it was totally gutless by 50k (low mileage city car so it was still old enough to be outside of warranty by 50k). I've been a happy repeat Chevy customer (current Dodge Grand Caravan owner so take that as you will... they were just so dang cheap at the depth of the pandemic) but ONLY because you could get them super cheap when only a couple years old. Without steep discounts, its a hard sell.

I own the 2018 with this powertrain and it’s been the most unreliable vehicle I’ve ever owned. 10K miles in the front suspension creaks and groans at slow speeds over bumps. 20K miles in the coolant is constantly leaking from an unknown source and nearly destroyed my engine. Now I’m at 40K and this POS transmission started making clunking noises and smoke appears from under the hood even with coolant being at the normal fill level and temperature. Mechanic can’t figure out what’s wrong with it nor replicate what happened. This car is a ticking time bomb. AVOID THE 1.5L TURBO LIKE THE PLAGUE. Look up reports on this powertrain being unreliable and blowing head gaskets and pistons. I feel like my car is on its way out the door soon. The dealer said they commonly see a lot of the 1.5L with those problems but not the 2.0L. AVOID THIS POWERTRAIN. On the bright side, it does ride comfortably, road noise is kept to a minimum, and it gets great gas mileage but all of this is overshadowed if I have to spend thousands on repairs on a car that wasn’t designed to last after the warranty barely expires!

I owned a 2006 Chevy Equinox, the first vehicle I have ever owned. I called it Basic Betty, there was nothing fantastic about it. Full of plastic and stiff seats, the only thing this vehicle could do was go to point A to point B. I drove that vehicle everywhere until it literally stopped and died on me.

I just bought a 2024 Equinox last week. I love almost everything about it ... except the seats are really firm and after driving it home (about 1.5 hours away) and a bit more on the weekend, both my and my wife's backs were sore. Anyone else have that problem? Do the seats start to give a little more after a while? It's weird because we used to have a Cruze and it was really comfortable. (I'm 6'2 and ... not thin lol.)

I have a 23 Equinox LT (bought in March of 23) with the cloth seats and before that drove an 06 Impala which was a very comfortable car. Overall, I’d say the comfort of the Equinox is what’s impressed me the most. I find the seats very comfortable, although the bottom cushion is a bit short and ends a third of the way up my thigh. My biggest complaint has been the infotainment constantly freezing when I use apple carplay! It’s gotten so bad that I’ve disabled carplay altogether and multiple dealer software updates have done nothing. I think I may get rid of the car for that reason alone, and the 2025 Equinox looks a hell of a lot nicer than this current generation so I may give it a try…

The question is "CAN" you get a Rav4? The wait list for a friggin hybrid is going over a year at this point. So I don't think it's a fair comparison as you can regularly get an Equinox within a week or two at most GM dealers.

I test drove the 2022 model, and it was surprisingly weak. I say surprisingly because I’ve been renting these vehicles (with this exact same 1.5 liter turbo) on various trips since 2017 and they’ve never felt weak before. Up until 2021 models. Same engine, same weight, totally different feel. And yet in the video, Zach and Andrea say the 2022 they tested felt peppy, which was my experience also from 2017 to 2021, but not for 2022. Did I maybe test drive one with a bad engine or transmission?

Japanese cars never offer very adjustable front seats, especially front passenger; and lumbar adjustment is seldom available except top trim for driver. Also, CVT engines suck compared to regular automatic transmissions.

My wife had a 2011 Equinox. Everything in that interior broke at one point. We had the door speakers replaced twice. They started to fail a third time. The window regulators all had to be replaced and the driver side one started to fail again before we got rid of it. The engine burned oil like crazy. That car was babied. it always got serviced on time and I kept it immaculate, but it was just always something failing on it. I would never recommend anyone buy an Equinox ever.
