No CarPlay/Android Auto, speed limited, wonky stability.. holy cow..... I test road the GT and loved it, but the rider is trapped in the riders triangle. I need to be able to move my knees around. I was hoping the Grand America with floorboards would be the ticket... but with the stability... no way. I'll continue to look for aftermarket solutions before being the GT, but I don't like having my legs splayed out at a huge angle so now I'm a little bummed such a cool bike won't fit my needs.

I 100% agree with your assessment of the technology, in particular the phone compartment and the BMW app. I lusted after a K1600GT for years, and decided to wait until the 2022 model in order to get the TFT. Took delivery of an all black K1600GT in May, put 600 miles on it, and gave it back to the dealer. That phone compartment, and connectivity issues, paired with the jinky app were so frustrating that every ride I wound up a little bit more disappointed. Just bought a 2019 K1600GT and I am thrilled. Great review, very insightful and it is clear that you spent significant time on the bike - everything you pointed out is spot on.

That was the most honest review I ever watched. I had a gold wind, made me a bobble head, the wind buffeting of my head I could just never solve, it also had a weird shimmy at about 65mph, the BMW K1200LT is the most confidence inspiring motorycle ride I ever had, the brakes are very touchy, they stop you in a heart bueat....I miss the goldwings low center of cravity and its better analog gages vs the high tech bs of BMW, but after a three hour ride, my butt was less sore on the Triumph Trouphy, the the goldwind, and finally the bmw....take that to the bank.

Very accurate review (2016 GTL owner). Fell in love with the K1600 riding it for the 1st time during our 2-up tour through the Pyrenees-Spain and France. All those 180+ degree switchback climbs had me a bit worried, but the bike simply crushed it and was extremely confidence inspiring. It pulled in every gear. I did get leg cramps from time to time and some stopngo traffic felt heavy and sometimes fearful or dropping it during a few lunch and coffee stops. My 5'5" wife gave her experience as a pillion 10 out of 10 so I purchased a used one as soon as we returned to the U.S. Happy wife.... From a styling perspective, I much prefer the K over the G which I have not ridden. Now that I'm used to all the character flaws of the K1600, I have no regrets coming from several Yamaha FJRs. Too much tech is a distraction for me. Just gimme the wind, engine sound and some curves and I'm good to go.

I am an owner of a 2022 Grand America and found your review very accurate. The power is amazing! The BMW connected app is poorly designed when compared to Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto. The wobble is perfectly described as disconcerting, but is not not always present and believe it or not feels quite normal after some time in the saddle. I purchased the bike because the looks appealed to me and for long trips through the Rockies, and have yet to be disappointed. I am constantly looking for reasons to get back on and ride. Thank you for your review. Hopefully BMW, or any manufacturer for that matter, will watch it and listen to your critiques and some time in the future when I am ready to purchase a new bike the perfect bike will exist. 👍

Very thorough and honest review. I have a 2018 GTL and love most everything about it. The bluetooth radio connections are abysmal, but I get around that by using my headset for music and phone. The engine is superb, and the quick-shifter is like butter. Highway pegs on the engine protecters are a life saver for extended rides. I have ordered a new GTL with the TFT screen and supposedly improved bluetooth, but now I wonder about my phone fitting the compartment. It is a heavy bike and not the best for around town. To counter that, I bought an R1250RS, which is lighter and much more nimble in town. I love the TFT screen and bluetooth connections. It makes a great commuting bike, and performance is fantastic, but it is NOT a touring bike. The quick-shifter is very clunky 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd, and I'm adjusting to that. I considered getting an R1250RT as a 1-bike-fits all, but after renting one for a tour in the European Alps, I find it considerably underpowered compared to the GTL and heavier than the RS with the same clunky quick-shifter. I have not ridden the Goldwing. Service on a Honda would be much closer to my home, but it seems to scrape underparts much more easily than the GTL.

You nailed the instability issue of the GA. I sold my 2018 Grand America because of it. I tried a different windscreens and tires to no avail, the stability issue was still there on the freeway. I’ve previously had a 2014 GTL, 2017 RT and other non-BMW bikes - none displayed the instability of the 2018 GA. I now have a 2022 GTL and no stability issues with it. BMW is aware of the issue, hence the bike being speed limited.

I test rode the 1600GT in its second year of production, and was considering it as a replacement for my R1200RT. I LOVE the 1600GT. Gobs of power from any RPM from an engine that is as smooth as a prom queen's thighs, and handles like a bike 250lbs lighter than what the factory specs say it is. I ultimately swapped over to a 1200GS, but the memory of that 1600GT test ride leaves me with a longing in my heart. I can't imagine a better trans-continental tourer.

Hi, thanks for the video, even it is different than all the other reviews ;) I have to say one thing: the camera setting for the final thoughts (you more in front, boke around the bike) is much better than the wide shot BC its gets you more in focus and not the bike. And that is good, because the topic is final thoughts and makes it more personal. I don't know if you do that on other video but please keep filming like this. Again thanks for another great and honest video! PS: sorry for my bad english

Excellent review. I’ve owned the 2019 1600B for two years now and I love it. I will say the B also drifts just a little when traveling down the Highway. The stereos on these bikes absolutely sucks. Worst speakers ever. I love the new instrumental panel. I can say my bike is stock regarding the engine and pipes. I topped it at 145 MPH so the bagger will flat out move BUT because of you 😉 I’m selling it now to buy the 2022 1250 GSA. Great job Ian

I have been riding a 2012 K1600 for 2 years. Beautiful bike and a lot of fun. No drawbacks. Because I went on an adventure, (see "krazyklaas part one) the bike was no longer suitable because I also have to be able to go off road. Therefore I now have an Afica Twin 1100 the simple model. No comparison possible, of course. But when I see you riding and hear that addictive sound.......

Had the 2017 K1600 bagger from brand new. It drank the BMW advantec oil like it was going out of fashion. I got rid of it after the gearbox recall and a faulty sprag clutch issue where it had sat for 7 weeks in a glossy fronted franchise dealership. The DCT Goldwing eventually put the smile back on my face and I have not looked back since.

Hey, I'm a big fan of your channel. I own a 2013 K 1600 GT and put about 16K miles on it so far, mostly on longer tours. I can say that the stability issues may be just with the B version or Grand America. I really haven't had that with my base K 16. Maybe a little on windy days, but, less than with other bikes I've owned. As far as comfort, I'm 6'2" and even with the GT model, there is very limited leg room. I put an bead seat cover on which gives me a little more room. I can also say that once moving, this bike is like a giant sport bike with engine power everywhere and very strong brakes. The luggage capacity is impressive, and the handling is excellent over about 5 mph. I think the only thing that makes me nervous is if I need to back up when facing downhill. If you're alone, this could be a problem, so, it requires planning. The newer ones come with reverse, so, if I was to get another one, I would definitely get one with the reverse option. Anyway, thanks for your reviews. You are definitely one of the best bike reviewers on KZread.

The cost for servicing my Goldwing is very reasonable and there are multiple locations for Honda motorcycle dealers here in Central Florida. I like BMW motorcycles but there are very few dealers compared to Honda.

Stability issue is interesting: you have the back wheel thrusting below the CofG, the top box dragging above the Cof G and now they've added a small set of wings to lift the front wheel a little more (footboards). perhaps some downforce at the front to keep the wheel on the ground might help? Great review. Thanks.

Very well done and honest review. That wandering around would wear me out especially in WY, MT, other places out west where the wind is never ending. That 100 MPH Granny control bothers me, not because I necessarily want to go over 100, but it sounds like a ghost hiding in the closet in reference to high speed handling and safety. I don't really like the '18 and up new model 'Wing for several reasons. For now I think I'll just keep my old low tech, steam gauge '13 Wing. I do like the competitive pricing on the BMW and that Indy car sound of the engine. I'm really not mature enough to own a 160 HP bike! Thanks for the ride along, Happy Trails!

Superb review as are all the ones I have seen from you; thank you. Conversely, unless I missed it, you did not mention anything about the clutch, quick shifter performance, the Rain Mode, the operation of the headlight orientation in four directions, the Reverse gear function, that there were 5 levels of heat for both the grips and the seat, and that models without floorboards have locking side compartments. Do you have commentary on these things? Thank you.

I had the wobble on two different k1600 Baggers. One of them was a demo bike , and the other was a bike that I rented in nevada, knowing that it was most likely going to wobble, and it most certainly did. I wholeheartedly agree, it is very disconcerting - not what I would want in a touring motorcycle.

Up here in Canada, I never use regular fuel in any of my bikes, regardless of brand. The ethanol in the regular fuel actually attracts and absorbs water and really does a number on the tank and fuel system over the 6-7 months of storage over winter. The higher octane premium fuel doesn’t contain ethanol.

I am glad you mentioned the instability issue with the Grand America. There is even a class action lawsuit against BMW. I bought one in 2018 and returned it after a few days later losing quite some money... My dealership would not admit there was an issue. As you said, this is unacceptable for this kind of bike. As much as I like BMW bikes (I still own a 1200 GSA), this time the company handled this very poorly.

Honestly, at 800 + lbs, I'd be a little leary about riding it period. I'd love to see one with a bren tune and aftermarket exhaust! I'll stick with the Africa Twin. As always, very good review Ian. I own one and it's a dream. Been riding it all summer around British Columbia. The bike seems very safe, comfortable and the pull is like a roller coaster launch. Some nice features and a few "not sure why they did that? things" but overall it's a really great bike and the motor is simply unreal. I have the GTL without floorboards, so I don't have the wondering issue at all. Also agree the app is a pain vs. other ways of doing that.

I had a similar wobble back in the day with a GS1100G shaftie, fitted with aftermarket suitcase panniers. At a constant 160kmh+ on the Coquihalla (when it was new) it had a rotational dance that I eventually attributed to a big vortex coming off the back end of the bike. Dollars to doughnuts, that's probably what's going on with the GAm too. Depending on my pechant for a particular seating position I'd either shoot for a GT or GTL anyway. The GAm is a non-starter - if I wanted a 2022 Goldwing, that's what I'd get. No need to for some kludged panniers looking like worn bars of soap and a pair of droopy exhaust pipes on something with an engine that potent.

The UK Honda ST1300 Pan European had an issue with stability at high speeds (Police bike speeds), however, there were two issues found. First the swinging arm system had to be strengthened from 2004 onwards and secondly, the tyre pressures have to be spot on, 42psi front and rear. These bikes (BMW K1600) are the heaviest bikes on the road and crucially, the speeds you were talking about when the instability kicked in are illegal speeds? I owned the GTLE and although I loved the inline 6 power plant, comfort and tech, I found it simply too cumbersome to handle on twisty high country roads of the UK. We went back to the Yamaha FJR1300AE. Good review though.

I like the motor on this bike, but I bought the Gold Wing DCT because the peg to seat distance was too close. My knees were too cramped on the Beemer. I’ve had the DCT for 2 years now and added a Corbin seat and fully adjustable Helibar setup. For a touring bike it’s just hard to beat. I still love my BMW GS adventure and Yamaha FJR1300 too.

I own a K16GT. Rode a ‘22 Wing extensively lately. Put a few miles on a ‘22 Road Glide Limited CVO too. I wasn’t huge on the CVO although it was my 2nd favorite engine. Ahead of the Wing. The Gold Wing has more ponies but didn’t feel like it had much of a power advantage on the CVO. Brakes - BMW. Suspension - Honda. Seats - CVO but all 3 are the shits for anyone over 180lbs. Dealer Network - CVO. Wing 2nd here. Materials - BMW. Ergonomics - Wing. Public attention - CVO & BMW. Honda is invisable with these 2 around. Motor - BMW…& maybe the deciding factor. It’s plain addictive. Easily spanks the other 2. Fun factor thru the roof when u roll on the inline 6’s loud handle.

Good review, the latest update to the K16 really disappointed on the tech side, I really see no benefit to upgrading from my 2018 K1600B, which has had perfect reliability and has never had the wobbling you experienced, the stock screens on all variants need to be replaced, all of them need a kick just before the lip help with the buffeting. The Goldwing is a great bike and for many people that is a better choice, but for some of us that engine is just to special to pass up All six cylinder bikes because of their rarity and impracticality are special Thank you for the insightful review

That engine sure is silky smooth and that's the reason I bought a 1250rt instead. Need some rumble. I actually like the tft display. I think that bike needs a software update. Earlier versions the dial wouldn't control the volume. Most recent version fixes many bugs including that. Using the 4 quick buttons make navigation really easy. Great bike but expensive to service. I was shopping for a sport bike in 2018 and was leaning towards the K16 because of the performance. I checked out a GTL at the local dealership (the Grand America didn't exist yet) and was terrified just sitting on it in the showroom. The power And comfort as well size is what keep me with my k1600, but what I go thru with this bike is another story. I always pize BMW and Mercedes from my and family experience, for they quality build and no issue, until in 2018 I bought new k1600 moving from Japanese bikes where change of oil was only thing to do but in BMW I had - failure of transmission, failure of engine /replaced, failure of switches on handlebar 3x, 4x replacement of Navi, abs failure. Now bike work fine with 50000miles on clock but the quality build stay in my head which affect my searching for new beast. I think I will end up with new gtl for size, power, comfort. I hope they fixt the issue with build that some k1600 pull to left if you barley touch handlebar because if you go trips like me from north Scotland to Croatia it affect your shoulder due to pushing bar constant to counteract bike pull. It’s amazing bike give you plenty smile and plenty visits in workshop too. Everything in that review is as the bike is apart long review knowledge. Just to add you absolutely right for the phone pocket on bike it is perfect space not for phone but for credit card while traveling on highways in Europe lol

Even the Honda Twin Africa 2022 already has Apple car play and Android Auto, but yeah, still, for its engine, it has its own place, like the R18. But sometimes riding a bike is not always about comfort, ease to use, etc., but it is a passion to listen to the engine or other reasons. So I bet there will be people who will buy and use K1600 Grand America because of this reason.

I test drove a GA for an entire day and then test drove a New 18wing. I actually loved the GA far better than the wing for many reasons. My decision to buy the wing instead of the GA came down to maintenance costs, dealer network and parts availability. Far and away the GA was a lot more to maintain. I do know 2 people would bought GTL's and after 3 yrs traded them in due to issues and maintenance costs. That motor in these bikes is unbelievable...wish my wing had it but, i made the right decision in choosing the right bike for me.

I had a 2020 Harley Limited and they fixed the wandering and buffeting issue by cutting a vent hole at the bottom of the windshield. This reduced the pressure on the front of the bike and most importantly erased the pressure bubble behind the windshield where the buffeting would occur. So if your bike does this, get out your sawzall guys and start cutting, or, just order a windshield with a vent hole, your pick.

I sold my 2021 Road Glide Limited for it. Absolutely no regrets! Before I bought Tiger I almost bought a 2022 BMW GTL K1600. The engine blew me away but the size is the issue. Thats why I sold my Harley Road Glide Limited. I am thinking about the BMW R1250RT now and wanted your opinion as to what you would choose a 2023 Tiger GT Explorer or a newer BMW R1250RT. The look of the BMW appeals a bit more to me than the Tiger GT Explorer. I know every bike has something that is not perfect but wanted your overall opinion between a 2023 Tiger GT Explorer or a newer BMW R1250RT? I dont want to regret selling my new Tiger! It really does everything really well.
