In order to win a game of polo, a player on horseback must use a mallet to strike a little white ball between the goalposts of the other team. Volkswagen, on the other hand, is aiming to not only drive a wedge into the light vehicle class but also to rip segment traditions in two with the introduction of the next generation of the Polo.
The previous generation of the Polo, which was introduced to the local market in 2010, was always a "cut above" other three- and five-door hatchbacks in terms of its smooth turbocharged performance, silky ride quality, and outstanding rear-seat comfort and amenities, particularly in its loftier model grades. This was especially true for the higher model grades of the Polo.
Now, however, the five-door model that was manufactured in South Africa has gained the extra space necessary to live up to its rumored ambitions of being in the upper class. According to Volkswagen Australia, it is now able to compete on both the turf of small hatchbacks and compact SUVs, putting it in a position where it not only stands above competitors but also surpasses them.
Because the price of this entry-level Polo 70TSI Trendline is now more than that of its previous competitors, if Volkswagen wants it to be a successful model, it will need to bring more to the table than simply a bigger footprint than its competitors do.
The 15-inch alloy wheels have been removed and steel wheels with hubcaps have taken their place. Additionally, the vanity mirror lights, rear map reading lights, and even the glovebox light have been removed, as well as all of the overhead grab handles. However, in their place comes an 8.0-inch touchscreen that is bigger and has a better resolution (an increase from 6.5 inches), as well as 'city' (or sub-30 km/h) automated emergency braking (AEB) as a standard feature for the first time.
The realization that taller drivers will not even come close to touching the top of this new Volkswagen Polo will likely be the first thing that strikes them. The previous generation of Volkswagen's light cars had a driving posture that was dangerously elevated, in addition to having a driver's seat that was quite cramped.
The latest version of the five-door is really lower than the previous one, which is shown by the fact that it has more squat proportions on the exterior, but the seat descends appropriately to accommodate the lower profile.
Especially in terms of width, the 70TSI Trendline feels like it is a half-size larger than it was before. Additionally, with its user-friendly and bright touchscreen, elegant and traditional analogue instrumentation, and neat leather-wrapped steering wheel, the Polo can feel as though it is playing more than just a little bit of golf.
The lack of a storage bin in the center console, the completely hard door trims - now devoid of the cloth inserts that were previously standard on the rear doors - and slightly too firm seating can give away the fact that this is a light car and not a small car, but that is about the extent of the evidence up front. The rear doors still have the cloth inserts that were previously standard.
Legroom is still not quite up to the high standards of the Kia Rio, for example, which measures up with an even longer hatchback body. However, the one row behind it has the tilted-up seat base, which is still among the finest in the market.
