MacArthur “Genius” Fellow and Grammy Award-winning mandolinist, singer, and songwriter Chris Thile served as the host for the evening. Thile, who NPR calls a “genre-defying musical genius,” was the host of the public radio favorites Live from Here with Chris Thile and A Prairie Home Companion.
Thile was joined by MacArthur ”Genius” Fellow and Grammy Award-winning Cécile McLorin Salvant, who has been hailed as one of the greatest contemporary artists in jazz today by none other than Wynton Marsalis. Marsalis said of her prodigious skill, “You get a singer like this once in a generation or two.”
Grammy Award-winning percussionist, composer and actor Zakir Hussain who is credited with popularizing tabla and Hindustani music outside of Asia. Hussain has received honors from both the Indian and United States governments.
Pianist Timo Andres, a Pulitzer Prize finalist for composition, took the stage to perform solo and ensemble work. Andres’s compositions have been performed at the most prestigious concert halls around the world including the Barbican Centre and Carnegie Hall.
