A number of people have asked if we'll do this again next year. I'm hesitant to make any promises, but we're definitely leaning towards doing so. There's no small amount of work involved, especially given that there are certain things we might want to do more deliberately if we did a SoME2. Stay tuned!

Isn't uniformly choosing a random point in a circle (or in any geometric space > 0D) an impossible task without discretising it? (At least in a limited amount of time?)

the problem with it is less bad if you're better at getting bored of non-educational videos than you are with educational ones. unfortunately you need to know which is which. and unless you go looking you won't get shown how much more it could be showing you

I mean, it's pretty cool that lots of people made videos for this. But for many of them, these are their *only* videos. Most people are unlikely to subscribe to somebody who makes 1 good video, hoping for more, so many of these folks will just disappear again. Come to think of it, I haven't been watching 3b1b from the start. I think maybe I started watching his stuff after he'd been at it for a year and had over a dozen videos (during the linear algebra series, probably, or maybe the calculus series).

It is truly amazing to see the incredibly breadth and diversity of both math and mathematicians who have taking part in SoME. Congrats to everyone, and in particular the winners!

I love how noticeable the effects of this contest were, suddenly my KZread-recommendations were filled with interesting math videos. I really hope this happens again next year.

Everybody was commenting "we want more 3blue1brown videos" but what they actually wanted was high quality thought out math videos. So in a sense Mr.Sanderson delivered fully by helping out the community and provided us with hours of new videos to watch. Brilliant I might say.

Hi everyone! I made the video "The Tale of Three Triangles" which showed up at the end. This was such a fun competition, and it really motivated me to take my work to the next level. Thanks to Grant, James, the guest judges (especially Tai-Danae Bradley, who's a huge inspiration), and all the peer judges. This was the highlight of my summer and I'm so happy that people enjoyed my work. I loved all the other entries (especially the light-flicking puzzle) and it was great to have more math to watch.

its not youtubes fault. the reason the algorithm seems to be doing a better job is because there is suddenly a LOT more math videos for the algorithm to work on. and a lot of them are really good too. so it seems to finally be doing its job, but the reason is because it has stuff to work with

So, I didn't know about the "contest" before now, but I've seen *so many* of the mentioned videos on my youtube stream recently. Thank you for inspiring people to create these

i was going to participate in the contest but i didn't, I was so suprise to see that I have already watched many of the videos shown! Thats why there was so many AMAZING new math videos on my fee! Thanks for the contest!

My 8th grade chem teacher once mentioned that the weird clouds electron orbits form is due to higher dimentional geometry which was why the video on how how 4d points map onto a 3d shadow was really intersting.

@@dindindundun8211 As a primer, you might like to use what you learned about SO(3) in the Dirac video to dive into spherical harmonics. A little knowledge about Laplace's equation should be enough to start getting a grasp there. Those functions certainly tie into the shapes of electron probability clouds, and that much I can provide resources for -- as far as reasons for this connection go, and as far as higher-dimensional geometry goes, I'm a clueless soul...

It's kind of insane to me, as someone who never thought of math as more than just a school subject with only realistic applications, to see how math can be used in fun exciting and fascinating ways to learn and grow the ways in which people understand the world around them through numbers instead of words. I loved this contest, and hope it can teach everyone, interested or not, in the thought processes behind math

I hope this can be a yearly event. I think it’d be inspiring to see the community evolves, and also would give a lot of people drive to keep creating and exploring. I absolutely loved exploring all of the entries and it left me wanting to see more.

I'm glad Grant used his reach for this this competition which acted as a multiplier of the number of high quality math explanations available online!

So that's why KZread started to get full of these amazing videos! I already watched a lot of them, they are truly awesome. The value that Grant and his team have created with this it's truly inmensurable.

Technically, I am not even part the math community. I just drop by whenever I feel like to see some cool stuff, but man! This whole thing actually moved me. I was almost crying while watching this video from the sheer beatifulness that this massive joint project collectively produced.

I really loved this event. I didn't participate, but the amount of new educational content creators that I discovered is amazing. Props to all of them!

I would suggest that you hold one of these contests regularly. Some people missed it and it is a great way to get underappreciated but nonetheless superb videos get more attention. I am also looking forward to watching the whole playlist and would love to have that opportunity every year or two. It would be a real gem.

What I find great is that I'd seen quite a few of these videos prior to your video. So obviously, what you're trying to achieve here is working. The Bezier curve video was definitely my favourite of them all. So beautiful and well explained.

I think my favorite part of this contest has been seeing how much it's changed my recommended videos! For all the issues I have with the KZread algorithm, it really is amazing to notice the shift in curation towards a much greater diversity of maths related channels. It's so exciting to log in and have my first thought be "Wow, these videos all look incredibly fascinating!" rather than "Who in their right mind would ever decide to watch this?"

There were literally so many interesting videos I could watch and I enjoyed all of them. Like you said, it’s not about who won, but it’s about all the videos which were made and can still be enjoyed by many people for years.

It was really fun to join in on SoME1 this year, loved seeing all my fellow submissions! Love the influx of math content on KZread this has led to!

I have watched some of the winners videos in the previous without even knowing that they were somehow linked with this competition. Just goes to show how competition like this has created genuine Math content that might not have been available without @3B1B. Love the great work!

The KZread algorithm kindly suggested about 80% of the videos you've picked... it was fun to go through some of them. It was obvious people put a great deal of effort into phrasing their ideas/findings/topics in an "easy to digest" way. I enjoyed watching them and I'll definitely be going through that playlist you've prepared. All of the participants did an awesome job!

I rarly ever comment on KZread, but I jusd feel obliged to thank you and all the other explainers. This summer was a truly spectacular one in terms of KZread content. Sometimes I felt like a kid in a sweetshop, unable to pick which video to watch. each explainer more intriguing than the last. A fantasitcal expirience, witnessing this vast abundance of math enthusiasm thrown all around. The future of math education just got a fair bit brighter. Thank you, from the depths of my heart. Hackenbush was my favorite too. I stumbled across surreal numbers a while ago, and was utterly baffled when I learned that they originated from game theory; that video explained where they come from so clearly.

I have a Calc 1 midterm tomorrow and I was supposed to be reviewing nonstop right now but thanks to your epsilon delta limit video I only needed to spend 1/4 of the time than if I hadn’t seen that video. So now I get the time to enjoy a new vid from 3b1b Feels good man

By making this contest you've inadvertently created nearly infinite content for someone like me to binge on. I've been basically non stop learning new things and revisiting old topics that I never got a solid understanding of in my undergrad. I think something truly amazing about this whole thing that really should be mentioned is the fact that KZread recommended almost all of these videos to me, and the KZread algorithm rarely shows me so much content that I’m genuinely excited to watch. More events like this should be held, if not just for the side effect of KZread giving better recommendations.
