@@theurbangentry Love the Longines Conquest Heritage but wish it was a bit cheaper. You should review the Meccaniche Venezianne Redentore, which is a similar looking watch from a microbrand that comes in 36mm. Also, I love the look of the Seiko SUP880 as a Cartier Tank homage but I find the size to be too big - wish Seiko made a medium sized version, as I think the ladies' SUP250 is too small in the other direction.

I agree - the dress/sports distinction is very artificial based on obsolete social convention. I would wear a sports watch in a formal event and a dress watch in a casual situation, as the mood moves me. We're not living in the Victorian Age any more where you have to dress in tuxedos for dinner. So when TGV says "when it comes to fashion there are no rules" it seems to undercut his entire thesis of wearing a dress watch in formal occasions like weddings, graduations, etc. Just wear what you want, and unless you're wearing a diamond studded watch, 99.5% of the public won't even notice your watch, and if they do notice, they'll assume it's a Rolex regardless of what you're wearing.

Wearing a “dress” watch daily is much less gauche than wearing a damn _dive_ watch with a suit. Doesn’t matter if it’s an expensive, vintage Tudor, dive bezels are not elegant.

orient bambino is nice, however it is actually abit too large for a traditional/classic size dress watch .... an orient star under 40mm might be a better piece or those newer bambinoes. however if you are a big size /big wrist man , then that would be absolutely not an issues at all . i own a Orient star classic in white dial and blue hands.... oh the blue is so shiny and nice.

TGV, Really enjoyed this one. for me the watch is a piece of flash that should not have any attention drawn, when dressing in black tie. When noblemen "cheers", or celebrate. They do not "clink" glasses as to draw away from the royal or more highbrow people in the room. More raise a glass and acknowledge the event. I feel this is the perfect metaphor for the time piece, dressed to the 9's to complement but never to distract. those who know what you have on, will always know. quality as always. Rory.

I do like a nice dress watch. Have to say my go to one is my early 70s yellow/black fade dial Ricoh automatic. Due to its age it's nice and slim and small, and I change the strap depending on outfit and it goes so well with a nice black or brown leather. It was very inexpensive, but keeps amazing time. I don't get many chances these days to wear it, but always love it's vintage charm when I do ⌚. Some great choices mentioned on here sir, as always very much a pleasure to watch 👍

I recently acquird a new Hamilton Intra-Matic with the Hodinkee inspired champagne dial. It's a very well proportion and elegant piece with the ETA 2892-A2 at its heart. A movement that is as reliable as it is accurate. The 60s vibe is particularly strong with this one and its very comfortable on the wrist.

For a dress watch - which I almost never go to occasions that require formal - I'd go for something understated and simple. A plain dial with roman numeral hour markers and probably just two hands in a precious metal like gold. Like you said, it's not a military operation so complications aren't necessary but a moon phase is always classy and refined. I have an SKX007 as my 'do it all' watch and was my first automatic and I love it.

First, when I bought Frederique Constant FC-303NB6B6 as a weddind watch I really liked it. Slim profile, decorated rotor, hi-beat movement, clean dial. After some time I thought that it might be too big for a dress watch with 43mm case and relatively long lugs (mostly because it's conventional to wear smaller dress watches). Still, after wearing it occasionally for formal occasions, I started to realize that, honestly, I love that it is on larger size. While I enjoy wearing 36mm Seiko, I feel more comfortable and relaxed with a bigger watch on a wrist. Partly due to bigger wrist size, partly due to previous experience. So, my advice for choosing a dress watch would be to start from smaller watches, but also not to ignore larger models just because they are unconventional

On the infrequent occasions I dress up, I choose my Seiko 5 SNKK71. simple, smaller (37mm), flawless. It does add the day/date complications but as they're colormatched to the sunburst dial I don't think they detract or distract.

Great work TGV. You offer some nice options as well. I have two dress watches, a Cartier Tank Francaise and the Grand Seiko SGBW231 - both of which I adore and even enjoy wearing casually. At least to me, there’s nothing like wearing a dress watch with a polo shirt and a pair of jeans.

With time I go more towards dress watches than sporty ones. In my "sports era" I was flipping all the time, I got bored with watches so quickly. That changed with my first real dress watch - Breguet 5157, which is still my favourite watch that ever existed, simply perfect. It's THE WATCH in my eyes. Since then I added to my collection few more Reverso, Jaquet Droz, PP Calatrava. And all of them are keepers. Then I started exchanging my sport watches for more elegant counterparts, like Blancpain Leman, Piaget Polo S, Cartier Santos, Cartier Pasha, Bulgari Octo, BP Bathyscaphe, Patek Neptune. No more rolexes, omegas, tudors. And I'm so happy about that. Finally I discovered my own taste, I'm not affected by trends anymore. Thanks to my beloved Breguet :)

I live in the world of the arts, classical music. I rarely find myself in situations where a diver or chronograph would be more "appropriate". I'm drawn to the art deco, or mid-century modern style. I also like classic old-world aesthetics. Thanks for a great video.

Only numeral date complication, less than 12mm tall, cream or black dial, roman or markers (no Arabic numerals), stainless stele (I do not use gold), burgundy croc leather strap (as per GQ it goes with everything), automatic, and for me that I will use it like once a year the cost can not surpass $1500. I think with Longines you can’t go wrong!! Outstanding video my brother!!

Dear Urban Gentry, I am new to being a collector. I am a collector by accident as I have a few quartz Seiko watches that I have purchased since my early 20's. My Seiko Mickey from the 90's is the most fun watch I have. It isery accurate with the day and date. It is still as accurate as can be. It talks to my 3 year old grandson when I wear it. Lol. I also have a Seiko gold tone dress watch from the 90's. It is the Seiko Gentleman's Quartz V701-2038. I wear it with a tux as the simple black dial compliments my musician's formal attire. It is very thin and light and does not affect my violin playing on concert night. As I retired from teaching music I caught the watch fever and bought my first watch in years in December of 2020. It is the Hamilton Mechanical Khacki in green dial with date. I just love it and love to wind it every morning! Both of my son's own the exact same watch! The three of us have an extra special connection by having the same watch. I also replaced a Seiko Solar (broken and totaled) that I have with the Classic Orient Automatic with day subdial and date at the 3 marker.. I like the Roman XII and love to watch the movement, listen to the tick at night, and am impressed with the rear window and movement. This is new for me! Retirement is growing on me. So, now for my question. My wife and I will be celebrating 35 years of marriage in July. I would love to get another watch to mark the occasion. I cannot afford a Cartier Tank but love the railroad track seconds, white dial, roman numerals, blue classic hands, durable sapphire window, and dressy classic look. I love the Hamilton history and think the Hamilton Boulton American Classic in white is a great option. What are your thoughts? Thank you for sharing your knowledge on youtube. I am glued to them as I see them!
