Excellent side by side review. TS in my area have the plank deck versions for $1149 & more than a few in stock. Plan was to wait until mid-winter to make the purchase but I think I'll grab one this week. Supply of all trailers is dwindling around here.

Omg... Today I bought one old style trailer at Lowes... When trying to transfer the title the did a mistake and they didn't have the correct title it was from other title...they refund my money... And now I am here whatching this video.... Just waiting to run to Tractor Supply Co... God Bless You... tomorrow I ll get my new trailer

This is probably the most useful trailer review I've ever watched. I was just about to push the button and buy one of the Next Gen trailers, and this video convinced me. On my way to Tractor Supply! Thank you for this.

Great video. I just bought this trailer a month ago. And after watching your video I went and checked the U bolts and the axle. They in fact were a little on the loose side. So I definitely recommend checking all the bolts. But all in all I’m very happy with the trailer. Thank you for the awesome video !

I have had a few trailers including the carry-on 2018 version . I use cable ties to attach the license plate to the ramp. About half way up.

I just bought a 5X8 Carry-On trailer. Mine has a wood deck and retailed for $1,199.00 at Tractor Supply. I feel the same as you. It's a great trailer to move my big snowblower and my garden tractor. Very good review, thank you.

Good job with the review. It looks like they made some nice upgrades to the next gen especially with the paint, wiring and with the gate being removable. I bought my trailer Nov of 17 from TSC in Middletown. mesh bottom no complaints with it other than the ones you hit on your last review. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the review. I just bought this trailer today at TSC for $1199 (wood floor) in Maryland. It seems like a nice trailer and will work fine more my needs. I plan to build some sort of higher side rails to be able to haul slightly taller loads.

Thank you. I've taken some heat from people because I'm not a trailer expert. But that's what people do. I just try to give viewers an idea and a different perspective. I would buy these trailers again and I really like the upgrades on the Next Gen. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Excellent side-by-side comparing of the trailers. $50-$60 more for the 'next gen' series (mesh floor) is definitely a better bargain for the customers. Only thing I would have added are angle supports on the hitch area for of course support and ability to place a toolbox. All in all....Great job listening to your customers, Carry On.

@@Kgoutdoor I meant to comment that one has wood panels and the other does not. Along the other improvements seem worth more than the extra $60...to me that is.

I got rid of my license plate bracket and just bolted the plate to the mesh tailgate. Keeps it out of the way. Nice video👍🏻

This video was great, thank you so much! I just got back from a Tractor Supply in Topeka which is about 30 miles away because my local TS had a 5X8SPW for $1299 yet the TS further away had a 5X8SPW-GEN for $1199. I really tried to figure out what the difference was between the models, ("diff between 5X8SPW and 5X8SPW-GEN" doesn't reveal much in Google) so I wasn't able to find anything except that the specs for the "GEN" model show a 96 1/2" length bed. So, basically I accidentally purchased the newer model which is a relief because after reading reviews I was concerned with wiring issues, which appears to have been addressed. The next-gen model btw does not have a 96 1/2" bed as shown in the spec, it is exactly 96" like the previous model. But I am very happy that all the lights work and after coming back from Topeka I noticed the trailers at my local TS did have faded deck boards so they are very obviously the older model (at a higher price) than the model I bought which has beautifully new thick deck boards. I'm looking forward to enjoying this trailer and I'm very happy I "accidentally" got the model that addresses many of the concerns from the previous model. And yes, being able to remove the gate is a great feature!

Thanks for watching and commenting. I stopped by my local TSC last week and they had one of the older model trailers. The Next Gen is a much better trailer then the original. You will be happy with that purchase.

There are aftermarket valve stems available that you can have your local tire sales department add to your rims. Some newer vehicles ( I drive a 2019 Chevy Silverado) have the option to read these “Bluetooth” valve stems air pressure and ALSO temperatures which will show a possible axle bearing ready to overheat. PS: Great review!

I havea older 5x8,it had the open mesh I put 3/4 inch plywood on the bottom and side and front. I put 1/2in plywood on the ramp. I also put 4 big 3/8 bolt down D ring tie down mounted on top of the top railing, I use the big yellow ratchet tie downs. I have had the trailer for 8 years or so paid 425.00 from tractor supply and love it well worth the money.

This video was great. Thank you. I’m going to get one of these tomorrow for various uses to pull with my Subaru Forester. Anything bigger would not make a lot of sense for me with what I’m pulling it with but for my needs this will be perfect. I just plan to use it for some overflow when traveling, bicycles, moving furniture, and likely some campfire firewood. Should be perfect for all those things. Thanks for the thorough review.

Good video and I'm glad you mentioned that you use your trailer for firewood rounds. I just picked up a utility trailer and was planning on doing the same with mine. I didn't know how it would hold up compared to a dump trailer. I didn't want a dump trailer due to their weight and that dang battery you have to keep charged!

I have a 2010 Caryon trailer from TSC, with the mesh floor. The paint job is really its most visible defect. Paint started to fail badly after 4 years. Its great for trips to the lumber yard, steel recycler, taking mowers, snow blowers and tillers for service, carrying straw bales and bagged peat moss, extra 3 pt implements to a neighbors for my tractor, brush and tree limbs, saving delivery charges for manageable appliances, moving, etc.. As I told one admirer at the scrap yard, " Its a poor mans pickup truck, when you cant afford both a car and a truck." The 8 ft floor length is great. Its already saved much more money in just yard equipment trips to and from the shop, than it cost, so the rest of its benefits are essentially free. My biggest " build " frustration is it doesnt track straight driving down the road. I cant see the trailer at all in the right side rearview mirror, and it always sticks out a couple inches on the left side, behind both my Equinox, and Ford Flex. Brought it back to TSC, when it was new, and was told "They all do that. What do you expect for that low a price." When I bought it, Lowes and Home Depot sold another similar, but more expensive brand trailer, about 200 bucks more, on sale. So, Ive grown to appreciate this defect, as I can always see the back corner of the trailer, while travelling down the road.

I just bought my neighbors from him a few days ago and I really like it, it's like brand new, he's only owned it for about 9 months. Almost no one mentions that gate flips forward and folds flat which is super nice.

Yes, mine folds in. On the Next Gen model, you can also take the gate off. I've never used the trailer folded in or removed. I'm not sure I would ever need to do either. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@clashavenfarms6714 I live in a subdivision with an HOA and there is kind of a space behind my third garage and the side of the house that's kind of hidden that's perfect for storing the trailer. The gate being able to fold inwards and flat makes it very low profile so I am planning to just plant some shrubs or trees along the side of the trailer and it should be hidden from view and angry letters. Then I can work on putting a shed up after that.

I just bought the open mesh from Loews for $1,198 and a $100 discount for signing up for their credit card. It's been great hauling furniture and my lawn equipment for volunteer work. I love the Carry-On and the only thing I ended up adding was a lock to prevent theft. Might get a Reese trailer jack for moving around.

I bought one and use it often I love the 5 foot wide bed and the rugged wood decking mine cost $1200 worth the money and all around

Fyi the lights on both are made by Optronics and they offer replacement LED replacement lights for the older trailer. It would be nice if carry on offered a small rectangle lock box as an accessory that would hold a breaker bar to change a flat and some ratchet straps.

I would like to give a shout out to this channel and Carry on trailer for a quality product. I use mine for a multitude of things.

@@franksmith8210 That is a recent change that KZread has made in the past couple of months. When I posted this comment four months ago, the thumbs-down count was still visible, at zero. It’s the total engagement with a video that matters. Total views, watch time, comments, and of course, likes and dislikes are all used in the KZread algorithm to ultimately predict whether KZread will promote a video or not. The thumbs down IS still an option and is still visible to the creator in the KZread studio; however, you’re correct that casual viewers like yourself can no longer see it.

Thanks for your review. I notice they did away with the center support brace in the tailgate, the spot one would use to drive a motorcycle on the ramp. Does the mesh seem strong enough there to you?

That's the one draw back I have about this trailer. I came across this after I did this video. I would use the center support when loading firewood rounds with my hand truck on the old trailer. The mesh is not strong enough especially for a motorcycle. Thank for watching and commenting.

I got the older version 2 years ago. I covered the mesh with 2x 6's. I got a tongue jack, spare tire holder, spare tire and I bought a cheap trailer box ( very cheap) . I'll keep a scissor jack in the trailer box. Thanks for the great video. Do you ever grease the hinge on the gate? if so how? Thanks again.I got it for $599 with $150 off the $749. My wife was telling me we don't need a utility trailer but we have used it a lot. To transport lawn tractor. I kinda wish that I used decking boards instead, they are much lighter. I didn't need 2 x 6's

I haven't greased it yet. I was lucky to receive this trailer because I lost the original one in my divorce. I have used this Next Gen one a lot over the last year in a half. It's been a great trailer for me.

Just mount your plate on the fender it will never hit the ground. If your state requires them lit or vertical I’m sure it wouldn’t take much build or find a bracket to attach it

Wood floor is cheaper we paid $999.00 5x8 gvw 550 load weight 1450 to equal 2000k. My complaint is the tongue doesn't afford room if you have a jack attached for a utility box. Someone told me the tongues are adjustable if you remove the bolts under the trailer and slide it forward but I'm not so sure it can be and can't find information one way or the other either. I made my own gate helper spring lifts so my wife doesn't have to struggle lifting the tail gate ramp. Paint is also an issue the top rail is peeling badly, otherwise it's been a good trailer for the it's first year. Thought I'd share my own review with you.

I really like your review, especially the side-by-side! I’ve bent my license plate and bracket too. I’ve been thinking of moving mine to the fender....it would put it high enough to avoid most damage incidents. You could even run wiring up to it, and it’d be able to be protected with conduit. -I probably won’t, but I could.... I bought a 5’ X 10’ from Lowe’s in April of this year, and have been very happy with it. It has the V-shaped tongue with a crossmember, so that’s a little sturdier. Mine doesn’t have the Gen 2 improvements, but still pretty decent. They make trailers with higher sides, and kinda wish I’d gotten one of those....they look great,

Its getting scary how much everything thing is but we keep buying it. I don't see prices ever coming back down.

On the new one they could have put a A frame support coming off the tongue. And could have put greaseable hubs on the wheels. And I mounted the tag on the tailgate on my trailer so it won't get bent. These are my pet pevis it is a really nice trailer

Excellent reviews and trailer, just buyer beware when purchasing from Tractor Supply. I bought the big one dual axle 6x14 it is currently 3699.00 since they said there was special financing. I decided to finance mine. But guys there is no special financing because I got approved for the purchase and exact amount. But the way they do there financing is it goes on your credit card and they report it as a maxxed out credit card at your limit so my credit took a 70 point ding and ruined my credit from 705 to 635 now. I will never buy from Tractor Supply again. But the carry on product is awesome. Just want to give you guys a heads-up 🙏😎☮️✝️

And mine looks like this was painted out door in a wind storm. Grit in the paint. Even the fenders are full of grit under the paint. They did NOT EVEN wire brush off the welding splatter. If you want quality work, you will be very very disappointed as I am!!! Remember mine is the $ 1,958.00 one, but I got it on sale. Item #757702Model #5X8GW

Same story with mine. Good little trailer for a good price but the paint is jacked up. I don't really mind because I'm just gonna beat it to death for 3-5 years and buy another one.

Paint is still holding up on mine. I haven't noticed as many Next Gen trailers at my TSC lately.

They did a great job. Just curious if you always left your gate on they could keep the nice new tag holder and also have a option on the gate to hang that’s not gonna hit the ground. 2 bolts holes in the thick part of the gate. Do it half way down so it doesn’t hit the ground when you drop the gate. He really did make a huge jump in quality!

Biggest problem for manufacturers is keeping up with DOT compliance. Tag brackets need a light source for night time driving. Securing to the gate means have to run wires to the gate which means people will break the light causing company to have to fix under warranty issues.

Based on your review and others I went to Tractor Sply today to buy this trailer but none in stock and tried to special order but Carry On stated this trailer is not going to be mfg for sale any longer. In this current configuration. They have another wood floor trailer but doesn't have the square tubing frame and just has 12" wheels. Really surprised.

My TS supply sold me a brand new old style today (4-18-22) for $1299. It wasn't even put together yet. Looked like a new shipment from carry on. I wonder why they don't have the next gen. After watching this video I will contact carry on and TS to see about an exchange.

Yeah I've noticed there are still some of the old stock out there. The old stock is still an okay trailer but if I had my choice I'd go with the Next Gen.

It’s 12” from the bottom of the tongue to the floor of the barn. Didn’t actually measure at the coupler, but it’s got to be darn close.

Soo glad i saw this... Was able to pin point who had the good ones, and what a difference! Since they only had them literally 18 hours, i even got to see them side by side (new and old). Also, some of the wiring looks questionable, but its a better routing at least

i just recently purchased a 5x8 at TSC and they price matched this same one mine was 1,099 and i got it for 849 with wood floor

The middle support in the gate/ramp is not there on the Next Gen. Motorcycles will be rolling across relatively unsupported mesh...

Yes, I noticed that after I did this video. I don't have a motorcycle but I use that center support with my hand truck when loading large wood rounds. I'll touch on that in my next video. Thanks for pointing that out.

It works fine for me the way it is, as the lawn tractor tires line-up with the two supports that it has. That said, I think I’d add another support to the middle of the gate, even if you don’t have a motorcycle.

Does the tongue fold in case I want to store it vertically on a 10ft height garage?

I also bought a Carry On trailer 6x8, from 🚜 Supply. As a retired Ironworker I go over trailers and their workmanship. The welding left me somewhat disappointed. Mt top rail is tubing instead of angle. That attachetment is a spotty

I don't disagree but for the price of the trailer it's what you would expect. Of course the price I paid for my original was back before the price of everything went through the roof. I no longer own the original trailer but I still have the Next Gen. It's holding up great and I've put it through some pretty good size loads.

Just picked one up today in part based on the review. The fit and finish are exceptional. I shopped trailers that cost hundreds more and weren’t as high quality.

They brought it to me.

I purchased the 2021 5x8 and it is build better than the old version. The new Gen version with the wood is $1149. No discounts these days. No one in my area has the new Gen version. TSC had just received 3 about a week ago. FYI. There are quite a few differences between the new Gen and old model. The new Gen has the 2x2 main frame vs the angle iron. It also comes with the light protector. The handle is good to help move the trailer, but you can use the handle to secure the trailer to the hitch with a lock and chain as the coupler is only secured with screws. Carry On needs to get more reviews of these new Gen units on KZread so folks know they upgraded the build quality on these trailers. I did not find any reviews on the new Gen trailers. Fortunately, TSC received the new Gen units and I could inspect in person and I am glad I did. I took the 5x8 home. The build quality has been improved. This is the first and only review on the new Gen trailer.

@@clashavenfarms6714 I almost purchased the original version from Lowe’s, but I checked TSC one last time and they had just received the 3 new Gen trailers just before I was going to pick up the trailer from Lowe’s. I had already purchase the wood and screws to install on the trailer. I canceled the purchase and returned the wood. The price difference of installing the wood on the older version, including my time, was a wash. However, the build quality of the new vs the old made it the better purchase.

My 2024 7x12 carry-on trailer I bought from tractor supply has horrible welding splatter all over the trailer that they painted over I need to sand all that down and repaint those areas

When the Next Gen trailers were in stock, their quality was way better than the others. I think they have stopped making the Next Gen's because I haven't seen any in the last two years. The first 5x8 trailer I had wasn't the best quality, but again, for the price and what I used it for, it was fine for me. Thanks for watching and commenting.

On the new one does the tires have a weight limited and can you buy a better tire or hub that can carry more weight ... I need to haul 275 gallons of water that weighs 2200 lbs

I would say you might want to look at a different type trailer. The weight alone would be an issue. Then take into consideration the construction of the trailer. An A frame connection to the tongue would be a better design to pull a water tank then the single bar to the tongue that this trailer has.

@@clashavenfarms6714 ... I have a 1999 Toyota 4runner and I saw a trailer with a 3500 lb axle but it may be to heavy for my Toyota its a 5 by 8 ... I was thinking of the harbor freight 1720 lb capacity then put a new 2000 lb hub on it thats 2000 lb per hub with a tire rated at 1500 lb 12 inch tire ... The harbor freight tire is 1000 lb per tire 12 inch .. I heard the harbor freight tire has a speed ratting of 55 hwy but the new tire I looked at has a 81 mile per hour ratting .... On Amazon but I need to buy the trailer and make sure the axle rod is 1 inch or 1.1/6 inch thick ... I heard testimonies of old harbor freight trailers before they got bigger tires and upgrades get overloaded with no issues ... I need to haul 2200 labs of water 6 miles round trip

I'm not familiar with the different models. I can say I like the Next Gen model over the older model. The one draw back to it is the missing center support in the rear gate but I can deal with that.

I had an older carry on trailer 5x8 that had the wires inside that conduit..........BAD MOVE.........ants got in and ate the wiring and shorted out all the lights, wires etc. was a whole mess to get it figured out and then repaired. did NOT use conduit for the new wiring.

What is the coupler height?

Curious why the the Lowes trailer has skinny tires and different shaped fenders than Tractor Supply. I don't really care about the fenders, (just an observation), but I do prefer the full size tires of the Tractor Supply trailer.

It kinda is, but I drive my lawn tractor & walk over the supports on the gate. I had one of the little mesh welds break, so I do that....it’s not so hard to do, but I wish they had a support under the mesh. I guess to be fair, one of the little welds broke, not the mesh itself.

It is. I would say something I didn't go over with the rear gates is the original has a third piece of angel in the center. I wish the Next Gen had that because I use a hand truck to load large wood rounds. I never realized how much I used that support on the original trailer. It works but you can definitely see the mesh flex when I go over it with the hand truck.

I don’t like how the floor boards stick up 1” past the metal framing. That is no bueno if u ask me.. with the birds up a 1” from framing their going to get beat up and broke .. Been nice if they were in cased..

The 5x8 mesh is now 1099 😲

@@clashavenfarms6714 It's a 2024. The ramp folds completely flat. You can get them all day at tractor supply for $999. Runnings had one for $1,100-$1,200 but it was old style and the boards were already rotten. I think they weren't even treated...

Did they let you keep that trailer?

I have 3 tractor supplies near me and I haven't seen a Next Gen at either location in several months. The one I have is still holding up really well. I no longer own the original one do I can't speak on that model.

I wish the trailer industry would retire the 1 7\8 ball & coupler. It isn't practical or relevant for any application except trailers that haul aluminum fishing or row boat's and utility trailers with very low payload and tongue weight capacity.

I would never buy one. Don't matter how much they cost. I was so upset with these trailers, I did a video as well. Maybe I got one made at 4:30pm on a Friday. lol

Maybe you did. I will say almost two years later and the Next Gen trailer is holding up nicely. Even the paint I don't have issues. I use it a lot especially over the last year. Thanks for watching and commenting.

You did not take into consideration the tires, what is the load capacity, date code, PSI rating. Are they appropriate the the maximum load instances over long hauls? Tongue rating, does it flex noticeably when the trailer is forward loaded. how far back does the tongue tie into the frame? You should leave trailer reviews to professionals.

I've been happy with the ones I've owned. Again, I don't use them every day, but they have always served me well.

I got one but I dont feel comfortable because the bar that connect from the trailer and goes to the hitch has only 2 🔩 bolt 🔩 feels like not very strong for me, I haven't hauled any heavy stuff yet. Do guys this will handle?

The original video I did I had a pretty good load of wood rounds on and the trailer did a good job with it. The newer trailer is my opinion is built better and stronger than the original. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I got the 5’ X 10’, and it’s better. It’s got the V-shaped tongue with a crossmember. -definitely sturdier.
