2021 Land Rover Defender 90 Towing Review: Can It Tow an Enclosed Trailer?

Land Rover says their 2021 Defender 90 can tow up to 7,716 pounds with 770 pounds of tongue weight. They say little about the shape of what it's towing, which means Jake's enclosed trailer is a perfect (-ly terrible) thing to test out behind the 2021 #Defender90. This aluminum trailer weighs about 6,800 pounds with a 680 pound tongue weight, and this 2021 Land Rover Defender 90 is powered by the 3.0 liter inline six-cylinder, which is turbocharged, electric supercharged, and uses a 48-volt mild hybrid system. All of that engine tech combines to produce 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque.
Critical specs for towing with this 2021 Defender 90 include a 101.9" wheelbase vs the Defender 110's 118.9" wheelbase. The Defender 110 is rated for 8,201 pounds where the Defender 90 is rated at 7,716.

This man clearly has no clue that the Defenders and Land Rovers in general are known for their towing capabilities and are designed as such. He claims that the Land Rover does not have a specific towing mode, but if he bothered to delve into the infotainment system, he would find that he could not only select a towing mode, but punch in exactly what kind of trailer he is towing with the appropriate number of axles. Perhaps he doesn't realise that the current and especially the older Defender (90) were towing livestock trailers (essentially box van trailers or enclosed as he calls them) and that used to be their main job. He needs to watch Harry's Garage where Harry Metcalfe pulls just as large a trailer of similar design (a car trailer in this case) with a Jaguar inside with a total combined weight of 3.1 to 3.2 metric tonnes.

All speculation and full of probably and maybes. If you’re going to judge about doing 65 whilst trucks pass you do it , don’t guess. Land Rovers are superior to all the others you mentioned. The center front seat is an option, clearly no simple research done. Waste of time watching this.

Nothing can touch the personality of a Land Rover Defender. It's iconic.

I didn't go for the ridiculously expesive Land Rover retractable tow bar, but I did go for their version that you clip in and the electrics connector twists up out of sight, albeit at a cost of £1700 GBP. It does look very neat, as you are not left with any unsightly metalwork when not in use. I tow a 3.2 tonne boat & trailer around with my P300 Def110 and it does it with great ease. I like too that you have a camera overlooking the tow hitch, so as you don't smash the trailer ball into the plastic bumper.

What are your thought on towing a 25 ft rv at 5500 lbs with a defender 110 4cylinder? I still can’t believe they rate these to tow 8k lbs! 😮

Land rover does not recommend using weight distribution with the defender with air suspension.

Reviews are about testing, not about guessing. Thumbs down for a lack of results in this "test".
