2021 Honda Ridgeline | Review & Road Test

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

For the latest Honda Ridgeline pricing and information:
www.kbb.com/honda/ridgeline/
To win over truck folk, the Ridgeline has donned its metaphorical belt buckle. In the back, the updates are simple and include a restyled bumper and a new dual exhaust system. Oh, but upfront, everything north of the front doors is new. New fenders. A new power bulge hood. New headlights. And a new, larger grille. Plus, the track is 20 millimeters wider for a more hulking stance.
This is my first time seeing the updated Ridgeline in the real world. And under the sun I have to say, it does look brawnier.
I’m not sure brawny and attractive are synonymous but if this style helps Honda sell more Ridgelines, more power to them.
For a more potent visual assertion of ruggedness consider the Honda Performance Development Appearance Package as seen on our tester. The HPD package adds a unique grille, nifty bronze wheels, HPD emblems, and these tacked-on black fender flares for a cool $2,800.
For comparison, here’s the non-HPD Ridgeline. I greatly prefer its looks. You might feel differently.
Inside, not much has changed beyond some new contrast stitching, reworked graphics for the 8-inch infotainment system, and the addition of a physical volume knob. That’s about it for the mid-cycle updates but the Ridgeline also possesses a range of compelling carryover traits.
The interior is still plenty roomy and functional.
Excess cargo fits well inside thanks to 60/40 flip-up rear seats.
The tailgate both flips down and rotates out making it easy to load the bed and reach the in-bed trunk. Also, there’s a roomy, lockable in-bed trunk (7.3 cu-ft) with a drain plug at the bottom, so you can use it like a big ice chest.
And even though it isn’t the largest among pickup trucks, the 5’4” bed can carry more than 1,500 pounds of payload.
If you’re motivated, you can do a lot with the Ridgeline’s functionality. Though I will say that loading motorcycles or cargo into the bed would be easier with a lower load floor.
As for mechanical updates…there are none but here’s what you get. A 3.5-Liter V6 (280hp, 262 lb-ft) matched to a 9-speed automatic transmission. (18city/24hwy) Honda’s i-VTM4 torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system comes standard and can send up to 70% percent of the engine’s power to the rear wheels and 100% of that power to either the left or right wheel as conditions demand. It’s a neat system that yields good traction off road and enhanced agility on-road.
At peak urgency, the V6 pulls eagerly. You can also use that V6 grunt to tow, just keep it under the Ridgeline’s 5,000-pound max.
I’ll also note that even though it looks “tougher” the Ridgeline still drives like a Honda Pilot with a bed on the back because that’s essentially what it is.
If you want a pickup truck with a fully independent suspension and the ride plushness that comes with it, this is your only choice.
Speaking of, compared to the Ford Ranger, GMC Canyon, Toyota Tacoma, and Chevrolet Colorado the Honda Ridgeline is far more expensive with a starting price of around $36-and-a-half thousand dollars not including destination charges.
For perspective, you can grab a Colorado or Ranger for about $25-grand. Granted a base Ridgeline is far better equipped and more premium-feeling than a base Colorado but you can also find more powerful engines, greater towing capacities, better fuel economy, and more body style choices from the Ridgeline’s competition. Oh, and that new Nissan Frontier looks pretty cool.
If you’re in the “it has to hurt to be effective” school of pickup truck ownership, then the Ridgeline refined manners might not be your style. But if you’re open to driving a pickup truck with a quiet cabin and comfortable road feel, the Honda Ridgeline is a pleasing non-traditional solution.
In total, the Ridgeline is a unique player in the midsize pickup truck category. Am I enamored with its new style?
I mean, it’s ok but maybe truck fans will be. And that’s fine. Dress up your pickup however you like but Honda, please, don’t stop answers questions in clever ways.

I've owned several pickup trucks over the past 30 years. The most recent truck I sold was a Ford F350 diesel 4x4 that I used to tow a heavy fifth wheel camper. Each vehicle I've owned was a tool to do a job. I only bought that diesel, for example, because it was big, heavy, and had massive torque. Those are things you want when towing a big trailer and it performed that specific job flawlessly. Because that's what it was designed for. When I wasn't towing the fifth wheel the truck wasn't doing what it was really designed for and it was terrible at everything else. Terrible at driving without a full load due to the stiff suspension, terrible at parking, terrible on forest roads, terrible in the snow, terrible ride quality on bumpy dirt roads, and very expensive to work on when things broke. My Tacoma was far more reliable and easier to park in the city but it rode like a brick too. But hey, it was also a tool that I needed because I wanted to do some hard-core wheeling on the weekends. This truck is regarded by most people as the best off-road pickup there is and with good reason. IF you want to do serious off-roading. I didn't mind the fact that it had a terrible factory stereo, didn't ride very well, had a cramped interior, no storage, somewhat dated looks, (though not as bad as the Frontier), and had a lot of road noise. These days I have ATV's and dirt bikes to go off-road with and the Ridgeline tows my 4,000-pound trailer full of toys like butter thanks to the nearly 300 HP and 9-speed transmission. So now all I care about is having a truck bed to get stuff at the local hardware store once a month (like most people) and one with a quiet interior, a really nice stereo, a plush ride like a Cadillac, great passing power, reliability, and really good gas mileage. All of those boxes were ticked when I test drove the 2020 Ridgeline. I bought this truck after test driving the 2020 Ranger, Colorado, and Tacoma. I felt the Ridgeline interior was substantially wider (it is, by 4") and the overall ride quality and road noise were FAR better than the competition. (no contest) But the truck "trunk" was the number one selling point for me though because I like to carry a lot of gear in the truck and don't want to worry about it getting stolen. We all know thieves will break in if they see any gear in the backseat. They'll also break into truck toolboxes really easily. But most people don't even know the Ridgeline truck trunk exists. It's under the bed by the tailgate, and it's massive. I keep 2 motorcycle helmets, a pair of jackets, 2 pairs of gloves, riding boots, tie-down straps, a hiking backpack full of gear, 4 hiking poles, a tackle box, and 2 fishing rods in that trunk and lock it then close the tailgate. People walk by the truck, see nothing in the bed, nothing in the seats, and move on. Call it a truck, call it a car with a bed, I don't care. I wouldn't attempt to do any serious off-roading in this vehicle but I can say it handles snow and mud on forest roads and mountain trails really well and I've never gotten stuck. As far as what I want from a truck nowadays, there's just nothing else on the road that comes close to this Ridgeline. It does everything it was designed to do VERY well. Do like I did, right before you buy the truck you think you want, test drive the Ridgeline. It will change your mind. That's what happened to me. LOL

I agree but it is a truck you just need to consider it a light duty truck. I just bought one and very nice and inovative. The only difference between this and a heavy duty truck is the frame design. But any small light duty truck out there they did design it to compete with and it does that very well. Plus it's 70% American made!

IMHO one of the biggest and best features of the Ridgline is Honda's bullet proof naturally aspirated six cylinder engine. So many manufacturers are moving to turbo four bangers, which I feel work too hard and run too hot for pick-up truck duty. I also don't believe that those four cylinder turbos will run trouble free for 200,000 miles, if they even last that long.

I really like the non HPD version... Actually the wheels look way better than the HPD version. To be honest, that is the pick up truck I need. I am not a rock climber, nor a Baja racer... An SUV wont let me load big or tall items... I just need a good Pick up truck to load some home improvement or gardening materials, load some appliances or furnitures to be moved, carry my bicycle, go to Costco, also COMFORTABLE enough for a long road trip and with good traction and skills for some light off road on outdoor days. I used to have a regular body on frame pick up truck and I know what is driving those, specially unloaded, The Ridgeline is pretty much a great answer for what I need, and surely what many other potential buyers need.... I just could ask Honda to reconsider that pricing scheme and put the base model under the 35k to justify more the extra amenities on the more equipped versions.

While the man in me wants a ZR2 or TRD, if I haven't found use for the off road capability here, I won't anywhere. The Ridgeline's AWD system is better on snow/ice than 4x4. More comfortable. Can readily haul motorcycles/sxs's/travel trailers. The extra space and trunk in the Ridgeline are elite for ski/bike/fishing trips. Seems like a winner to me.

I believe it's both the apple and android apps. I would suggest, if you can, connect your Ridgeline to your home wifi. It will pull down updates, which if there are new releases of the application, that may benefit you. I've only had my Ridgeline for a week now but updates might be your fix.

The design of Ridgeline was better suited to meeting my needs than any other midsize truck. However, it has 2 fatal defects. First it is not an off-road truck, so the standard AWD only adds complexity, decreases fuel economy, and adds $3,000 to the price when compared to the completion. If you live in a snow belt then disregard that comment. Second, it has one of the last remaining interference timing belt engines. Apparently, Honda has no problem saving $10-15 per vehicle when they know every customer will spend $1,000 between 60,000 and 100,000 miles to change the timing belt and water pump. And the HPD package is more than a $3,000 option for some graphics and tire package. Try buying a Ridgeline for less than $40,000.
