2021 Honda Goldwing DCT First Ride Impressions and TOP SPEED RUN!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Honda Gold Wing has always been a spectacular touring bike, ever since the first GL1000 back in 1975. And over the years, our engineers have always stayed true to that vision, but they’ve strived to make the bike better and better. Our 2021 model is a perfect example of that. Refinements abound, but the best parts remain the same. You’ll still have your choice of both manual-transmission models and Gold Wings featuring our exclusive automatic DCT transmission, but this year the trunk is bigger for more road-trip storage, the speakers have a higher 55-watt rating, and the passenger seat on our Tour models is improved. We also freshened up some styling touches, like solid red tail lights and paint choices-check out the grey with orange accent stripe on our no-trunk models! Plus, all Gold Wings are now Android Auto compatible, as well as offering Apple CarPlay™. All in all, a truly great motorcycle gets even better-so your dream ride has everything you’ll need to make memories that last a lifetime.

    My first GW was a 1978. 1000cc 4 cylinder. They came as a basic bike. I added a Windjammer fairing, saddlebags ,and trunk. I also added a radio with CB. It was a great bike. I traded it for a 1984 GW and I liked the 1978 better in many ways. I got out of touring and owned a Harley for just cruising around on for many years until I got our of the bike market. The GW is an awesome machine but, like you said, they are a 2 wheeled automobile now.

    Good video. Bought a 2021 DCT Tour in April after riding H-D Ultras for almost 30 years. Between the research and monitoring of the roll out of this new generation of Goldwings and the complete frustration with Harley’s approach to providing a full featured long-distance tourer through costly after-purchase upgrades, I decided to test drive a 2019 DCT Tour leftover last summer and was very impressed even though I definitely was not aware of all the features during the test ride. From there, I caught a rumor that Honda was going to enlarge the top-trunk for 2021 as well as improve the passenger seating. Finally in late March, a 2021 red-black model came available and I made the purchase. Every time I ride this, I am more convinced that this was the best decision I ever made and should have done it sooner, although I do use and appreciate the added luggage space in this 2021 model. To those questioning a move from a manual to automatic shifting bike, let me say that if you are thinking you can out-shift this bike, forget it. Honda’s technology has the odd gears running on one spindle and the even on another so that the next gear, up or down, is already spooled up and running at the time of the electronically actuated shift. That is why the 0-60 mph times are so good and could never be beat by a manual. And if you are thinking your downhill cornering approach shifting will be gone, first this bike has an uncanny programming to sense the downhill angle and reduction in throttle entering the corner and provides a downshift. If you feel you want an earlier downshift, you simply thumb the gray minus button on the left hand control and instantaneously the shift is made. Not enough engine braking, hit it again. And upshifting is the same. You don’t lose the ability the over-ride the shift. I feel like I now have two different bikes in one. In “TOUR” mode, I have an unbelievably smooth and quiet ride with early, lower-rpm, almost undetectable shifts that provide more than enough increase in speed while maintaining adequate torque. And in “SPORT” mode, I have a whole new performance programmed ride, with shifts being delayed to much higher rpms and also made quicker in response to throttle control. This mode also seems to perk up the exhaust and provide the visceral feel that is enjoyed with the more traditional sport bike experience. And handling is excellent, whether wide sweepers or tight cornering, it feels glued to the road. No, you won’t have the lean angles of the race-ready rocket bikes, but you can still enjoy some spirited riding through the twisties. I have ridden the K1600 GTL and Bagger and still think this new Goldwing is just a much better all-around bike, and when you consider the time-tested reliability record for these Goldwings, it is a no brainer unless you just have to have the bike with the highest top speed and greatest lean angle. In that case, buy the Beemer.

  • @roadglide

    @roadglide

    3 жыл бұрын

    100% correct. A 40 degree lean angle before scraping pegs is plenty. The Harley is only 30 degrees. Sport bikes are 50-60 degrees, 300+ lbs lighter and why they are classified as Sport. MotoGP race bikes. This is my 3rd Wing. Also a 21 DCT Airbag Tour. Wonderful bike in all ways. Congrats to you.

    The DCT does make very tight, low-speed maneuvering a bit interesting. Not impossible. Just a new skill set. There is no "friction zone", and it tends to shift at inconvenient moments. Get in the habit of popping it into Manual mode for that kind of thing. And practice! Other than that, though, DCT is the greatest thing ever. I do wish it would downshift a little more readily in Tour mode, but that's nothing a touch of the thumb button can't solve. It's fun to leave it in Sport and Manual. The power and sound are addictive. This bike is the closest thing I'll ever have to a Bentley Continental GT.

    I am currently deciding between this exact bike (same color with DCT) and the 2021 BMW R1250RT. I know the pros/cons of each and that they are different bikes. Coming from 2 VFR's and an RC-51, the RT seems more of what I am used to. However, I took the 2021 GW (a DCT and a manual) for a test ride and what a great experience it was. So smooth, relaxing, and comfortable. I am keeping the VFR so maybe the GW and the VFR cover more bases where the RT and the VFR are too similar. By the way, my 2002 VFR has over 90,000 trouble-free miles and looks/runs like new. You've got to love Honda reliability.

    That engine definitely has a ton more power to give! It's over engineered, and under stressed for high mileage, I'd LOVE to see what someone could do with it. I'd guess an eays 230hp /180ft lbs torque with moderate work done. Top speed should be around 170ish. I mean it's basically a 1.8L Porsche engine, now imagine one with Twin turbos, and tires to support the weight! My Dad rode these since the very first ones right to the point he passed, and his last Win is sitting outside right now. I think he loved these bikes more than us kids. He ended up with a fully customized 82', I'm not sure what he loved about that year, but he kept buying them. I know his favorite was a stripped 79' with a ton of performance mods, an absolutely beautiful bike. They are still the King's of the road.

    @@jdbmoto You are 100% correct. All Gold Wings past and I resent have easily removable and replaceable impact plastic skin. This is not news. It’s a good thing too. These bikes are legendary for their balanced power, incredible smoothness and reliability. Harley Davidson’s are legendary and beautiful. Their quality of paint and maintaining a loyalty to it’s history is exemplary. But they have not progressed in many important ways. The customer pays premium for nothing significant more each year. This is why they have struggled financially at the top. The company is becoming more about image and performance driven. The Gold Wing is designed around Touring in luxury, reliability and safety. This Japanese juggernaut knows how to build reliable performance engines. In both motorcycles and automobiles.

    Hello friend. I wish to make a safety comment directed to you. I personally have been writing motorcycles for 57 years. I have over 340,000 mi of experience and my most recent motorcycle, the 2004 Honda goldwing touring, is the most amazing bike I have ever owned. Now I can't wait to consider the new 2021 or maybe 2020 goldwing although probably I will go with the manual and not the automatic for a number of reasons but primarily because from research I really don't believe the automatic is the safest and best way to go. Now, I enjoyed your video presentation on the Honda goldwing DCT but for safety reasons I must tell you that I highly suggest and recommend that you discontinue holding the right handlebar and throttle with basically just your fingers instead of putting your whole hand on the bar and throttle as you should be. There is simply no way that you can have complete control of the bike without having your hand firmly on the handlebar and throttle.

    Great review and finally someone who shows the take off power of this bike. Most reviews drive like grandpa. you drove it like I would (will once I get it). My only concern for you is at red lights when the light turns green you are sitting there while everyone around you takes off and I was waiting for you to get rear ended. Hopefully that never happens. Ride safe and Thanks for the review.

    Geoffrey. Left grip should be solid. Right grip does have some ‘play’ in it up/down/side to side but only a few mm or so. The grips are heated so have to be allowed to expand and allow for different ambient temperature differences aswell. Check with your dealer but I doubt you have anything to be concerned about.

    I’m interested in a more detailed comparison between the Goldwing and the FJR. I’ve owned an FJR and I want to know how they compare riding around town and in the twisties. Also I wonder if the bodywork, panniers, exhaust have full protection when being dropped when stationary as the bumper guards of each side seem to suggest they are for that purpose. It would be nice to know that if you drop the bike at a junction or when parking for example that likely the only damage would be to the bumper covers.

  • @dougbongle3192

    I had a 2005 FJR that I sold after buying a DCT Tour. Have a bad left ankle that shifting became a problem, the DCT eliminates that. Almost as fast in sport mode, handles twisting well, but can feel the extra weight when riding around town. More luggage apace plus all the added technology of the new Goldwing. The bumper guards well protect if dropped. FJR will hold a full face helmet in each bag, the Goldwing will not!
