    1) 2:48 it’s a 2.5L… not a 2.0L 2) 3:05 those 🍊 cables under the hood are the indication that there’s electrification to deal with 3) you can’t get AWD with the plug in because the larger battery prevents Ford from putting the AWD axel in the plug in 4) 7:30 you kick once in the center.. don’t hold your foot under the vehicle and don’t touch the underside of the vehicle with your foot. It was a learning curve for me too, but reading the owner’s manual teaches you a lot. Who knew? 🤷‍♂️ 5) 9:40 the Bronco Sport may be built on the same platform, but it’s actually SUBcompact in size… much shorter and narrower than the Escape. 6) the “credit card holder” is more practical as a parking card slot, so you get a ticket when you pull into the parking garage and stick it in that slot so you don’t have to search for it frantically when you leave the garage. Also great for those that have a parking garage at their apartment or work that requires a card to enter. 7) 14:40 The “L” is for low gear…not a normal driving gear. You can actually damage your vehicle regularly driving in “L”. If you want extra regenerative braking, switch the drive mode to Eco which will increase the regenerative braking response. 8) 17:55 Ford sells a ton of these to rental car companies and fleets. That’s why Ford goes with the “nice but durable” interiors rather than more premium materials.

The main reason someone would consider a hybrid over a plug in hybrid? They are renters and don't have their own garage or access to an inlet. Ford was wise to note this.

The first ~decade of Escapes sold in the US were co-developed with Mazda. That’s why the Mazda Tribute from that era looks almost identical to an Escape. Ford went down a completely different path, though, starting in 2012. Ever since then the Escape sold in the US has just been a Ford Kuga with a different name. The Kuga was designed primarily in Europe, and shares its platform with the Focus. This is why the current Escape seems so sleek and non-boxy. It’s just a lifted modern Ford Focus with a different name tacked on. Even the little styling details scream “Focus”. The comment about the 1.1 kWh battery of "why even bother" is pretty frustrating here. I realize it was to start a review topic, but it's still misleading to the uninformed. In a typical hybrid powertrain - where the range buffer comes from the gas tank rather than the battery alone - it's best to convert the fuel tank capacity into kWh. This is a best case scenario, but considering the ~40% thermal efficiency of the Atkinson-cycle 2.5L engine on board, the Escape's 15.7 gallon tank results in ~210 kWh of usable driving energy. This is why a Hybrid Escape can get over 600 miles of range.

Will likely move on to a hybrid (or EV) in next 1-4 years. Even though my Focus clutch has been nuisance like style of my Focus HB (and dealer is close). Probably a Titanium Escape in my future. Want to get AWD next time around. Could not get up my driveway last winter! Most driving short distance local. Wanted to get plug-in hybrid for 100% EV for 30 miles, but unfortunately no AWD that way. Did you have to make that kind of trade off decision too?

In the event of a crash the engine control unit will send a signal for the high voltage pack to open contactors and there will be no voltage present outside the battery pack, aside from the 12 V which isn’t hazardous. :)

I own a 2020 SE Sport Hybrid (purchased 12/2019); very happy with it. Great gas milage. I am averaging the advertised 40mpg. In ECO mode, I’ve run on electric power at 70mph. Last year, after leaving a state park and driving on dirt roads to a secondary highway, I noted I was averaging 55mpg! Sport mode is fun. The dashboard interface color scheme looks cool. I can easily throw in 16 or so (40-pound) bags of heating pellets. People compliment the look of the car and the color (Deep Persian green). Yes, there are some cheap plastics in various places. I don’t care. Easy to clean. The infotainment system (Sync3) is easy to use, The safety features, including rear-cross traffic detection and forward-warning have saved us a couple of times. Had the Bronco Sport been available last year, I would have bought that (Back in the 90’s I owned a 4WD S10 Blazer), but my wife is totally happy with the more car-like Escape. It has been very comfortable on two or three-hour drives. We can still do a touch of soft off-roading (remember, the new Escape is not rated for off-road). Where we live, Subarus and Rav-4’s rule the road. Nothing wrong with either. Hey, my wife has a Subaru. But, I find the Forester and Outback and Rav-4 to be relatively boring.

I've driven the hybrid versions of both and I'd pick the Ford. It's certainly more refined on the road. The Toyota wallows and rocks and the engine is loud and unpleasant under load (although it's silent at other times). The Ford felt much more connected and feels like a small car on the road (that's a good thing!). The Ford uses a liquid cooled Lithium battery pack while the Toyota uses a 1990's NiMH battery, air-cooled. The Toyota will probably be more reliable, but the interior is full of cheap plastic too and the entire design is way too butch. Lots of angles and design elements that are not integrated well and are unrelated to the function of the vehicle. The Toyota reminds me of a wimpy kid wearing a leather jacket and spiked hair in hopes people will think he's tough.
