Your a blessing, i have the same problem you had after it’s first service. Furious and extremely disappointed at my dealer who i thought i could trust. After watching your video, for the 3rd time i hope i am confident enough to do it myself, but it is a bloody shame the KTM dealer charged me 300 euro’s for a shitty job. Love waiting your videos keep it up, they are fantastic, and for a lady like with 2 left hands, its a motivator to do some maintenance myself.

Hello there! and thanks for the comment and watching my stuff. Its always great to hear its helped and even fun to watch :) YES it is very unfortunate our experience with regards to dealership and chain tension. Definitely worth checking and doing yourself whenever it comes back from a dealer service. I was very mad when I collected my bike after the 600 miles service. As you can see from my video. After that I make sure I check everything in detail whenever it comes back. And its not a cheap service either. If you take your time and even refer back to the video AND always check the Owners Manual which contains the process (You can download the KTM manual from KTM for free too). And make sure you have the correct tools like a Torque Wrench to ensure the nuts are tightened up to the correct torque settings. Once you have purchased these you have them for life. (They are not expensive but always make sure you back them back to zero when finished). You can do it! Be positive! Got to start somewhere and to be honest I think setting chain tension is one nearly every one starts with. After all its just loosening nuts, pulling or pushing the wheel to adjust tension, and tightening up! Good luck! Ric

So to eyeball it before grabbing the tools in a parking lot on the center stand , looking at the half circle cut where the screw driver is inserted, if the top of the chain is flush with that circles, hook/pointy tooth on the bottom then chain is good. If below, too loose , and if above then too tight, hence tell tale sign to get screw driver to confirm when on center stand. Based on image at 6:54.

Looking at getting one of these so will follow you tuts.

Supp Ricardo mate. Really like and appreciate your channel. I ended up picking up a 2021 1290 few weeks back. Running sweet and no complaints although i had a 2017 from new for 6 years, no issues. No issues with this one either except... While I acknowledge we don't own the smoothest sounding bikes, mine has a real rattle and roll about it. When I pull in clutch and just roll.. The noises from chain fade out, when i release it they're back but diminished until I gas it. Then it locks in and the noises return. Sound like a chain and sprock issue. I went to dealer today and after performing and mentioning your point with the tension guide, and doing it correctly as you have shown here also, he also added some lube in the chain guide area . After rolling out and getting off home, no change, rattle n roll remains. Its at 14k kms now although my last 1290 i bought from new got me 27k so i didnt think to even question heavy wear on new 1290. Anyhow, wondering what to do now. Gonna hit the dealer up again but Im worried it may be something worse, hoping not. They're a decent dealer, but cash is cash at end of day. Also, I get movement side to side quite a bit while testing with hand on centre stand. Theres movement of back sprocket as well but not such that I see light when pulling chain backward at rear of sprocket. Not sure man...

Hello bud! great to hear from you and sorry for the late reply. And congrats on the bike glad you liking it aside from the noises. To be fair your dealer technicians will know a lot more than me about the bike. as I am no tech. However these engines are kind of noisy as you know yourself having on before. The chain clacking that I know of is the chain slapping the rubbing strip. As to honest I have never seen a chain so close to a rubbing strip (underside) as on these bikes. I dont think you will get around that issues regardless of having the correct chain tension. This is all the noise cold be if coming from chain and sprocket area I think.. But the rattle.. Its just the clunking of that LC8. If the dealer has given it the clear there is not much else to say. Mine was noisey at aroiund 14,000 miles. But even my Yam R1 crossplane was dam rickety too albeit with more mileage. SO I think if it rides ok and you are not get any other symptopms that the dealer has not spotted then just ride it and enjoy. But uyour doing the right thing getting the dealer to check it again as these are stupid expensive bikes :) Good luck Ric

Was told that the rivet on the chain was supposed to align where you have the screwdriver…? Damn shame dealer smh, makes sense it has a screwdriver on the guide. Thanks 🍻

My '22 SAS chain is too tight. I have 1700 miles on it now. At low speed there is a racket from the chain/guide. On the center stand today the rear wheel does not have much freedom in rotation. I feel kinda dumb for not checking it earlier. I have a Motion Pro wheel balancer that I have used on my other motorcycles. It is very easy to use and I will also be checking the tire balance too. Hiya Scottie sorry to hear it mate but don’t beat yourself up over it. To be fair it’s brand new and you’d think you wouldn’t have to check it in all honesty. I checked mine out of pure coincidence and was alarmed. I always check mine now going forward. As for the noise while on the centre stand that’s normal it’s just the chain moving around the sprockets and chain rubbing strip. Mine does it (if it’s the same sound I’m thinking) 👍

one thing to mention you need a 32mm socket for wheel nut i just bought one. my chain is as yours but i get a lot of chain slap guess I'm not used to it as my last 11 bikes were all shafts

Hello, i ve lost that chain measuring plastic part during ride. I have uninstalled it a few times, because of more place to clean and lube the chain and inner screw was tore down on both screws, so it has not hold well. Is it an important part or i can forget about it and how can i measure my chain tension now?

Morning Ric , just had the same problem as you . The bike was serviced then on the way home I heard a squeaking noise. Chain far too tight. On top of that quick shifter not working plus radiator fluid half empty. Not a happy bunny as bike was supposed to have been test rode . Think it's just a ticking exercise for them . Ggggrrrrr

Yeah mate gotta keep an eye on everything that comes back after a service. And that’s. It just with ktm but all dealers in general. Only you love your bike as much as you will and have a financial vested interest. And to be fair I have seen some of manuals and they can be a little ambiguous in explanations. But I always check now and make sure “I’m happy with it” 👍

Hi Ric, don’t think I have the screwdriver notch on my T version? Wonder if I can replace the bracket? Would it fit?

Hiya Ben! Sorry mate I don’t think you can simply swap in one of these. The geometry of the bike is different and so in your manual there will be a specified way for chain adjustment and monitoring. Definitely not something I’d recommend personally. 🙏

Hi Paul. sorry for the delay in gettin back (life got in the way). But as for my tiles. they are just the spongey neoprene type clip to gether type. Cheap as chips. And no my floor is not level but is most certainly desirable. I have a few bouncy parts where the floor dips. Hope that answers it for you? All the best Ric

I liked your video about the chain adjustment. I wonder if you have heard about handlebar wobbles at about 50mph. This is happening on my SAS. If you have come across this I would like to know how to fix it.

Hello mate sorry for the late reply. Yes I did have speed wobble but was at higher 3 digit speeds. I managed to reduce mine with the odd tweek. But to be honest I am still not entirely sure if my tweaks had that much of an effect or it was road conditions combined. I dont ride in 3 digts anyway so has not really affected me. Good luck sorting it though as low speed would surely annoy me too :(

Hello in the manual is that you should apply pressure to the screwdriver in as much that the screw driver should sit horizontal to the floor. This represents the correct chain tension. (Sorry for late reply!) Thanks, Ric

Hi Ricardo, Today i had my 620 mile first service with my KTM dealer and i questioned about the chain tension as i thought it was too tight! However he told me that your method of checking tension is wrong... From the technicians KTM Manual you put the screwdriver in the slot underneath the chain and lift the chain up . The correct tension is when the screwdriver is horizontal UNDER the chain without using excessive lifting force.

Hello mate thank you for sharing that. That is a sure way to screw your output shaft seals. The tension will be so overnight 😫 I have just sat with a colleague and both checked the manual and clearly shows a picture of how the screwdriver should be positioned relative to the chain and swing arm (also referred to as link fork in the manual). I will post something up a photo in the community section showing you direct from official 1290 manual. This channel is my channel independent of where and what I do for work. So won't be getting them involved in this. However I will say something if someone is saying I am wrong when I am clearly not. 👍

Tell me if that makes sense pls. 👍 I had my chain like your when I collected it and was offered any damages to be covered if there any as a result of an over tight chain last year. It was like a banjo string it was so tight

How you get on with dealer today?

I've just checked my chain lmao. Its going in for its first service tomorrow and I will be mentioning it to them. The chain is well over the guide and showing as too tight but yet the chain is loose ? I haven't touched it as of yet, so I'm hoping if the chain is stretched they will replace it or rectify 🤔🤣

Haha I see that all the time mate. Also it may seem a bit loose on the centre stand but I’m guessing you checked it when it’s off the stand. On the stand is just the guide / measure. There’s less slack more tension when off the stand. I doubt they will give you a new chain but good luck with that one. With a well tight chain my concerns are not a new chain but more on the shaft and bearings and engine before the front sprocket as that can be under massive pressures if chain over tight. Cause abnormal wear of bearings and seals. Good luck though and let us know what they say 👍👍🤝 Cheers Ric

The bike should be given to customers in perfect working order and everything set to manufacturers settings. BTW loving these videos pal. Maybe do some test ride videos on the other ktm models 🤔😁

Totally agree 100% mate. It’s very disappointing. If you don’t have wheel weights on your rim. I guarantee your wheels are not balanced either 👍 And yeah plan to have a blast out on few I’m of the others. Actually I am interested in testing the multistrada but a lot down to time permitting now my work pattern has changed. Sucks big time 😂… thanks for the positivity though mate! Much appreciated 🤝

Hello my friend! Thanks for watching my channel. yes these are very cool design indeed and makes it a lot clearer and specific to measure slack against. Not sure it would be transferale though as these new 2021 apparently have a slight extended swing arm aswell as a different geometry with the engine. The tension measurment point would have been specifically designed for this model (I would assme). Cheers Ric

@@RicardoYeep not that it was difficult to adjust on the older model, but this is much quicker and no other tools (I'm using motion pro slacker now)...I had test ride on this newer model, quite liked it especially the suspension/handling. Felt more balanced and front no chatter as I have on mine now. After many years I still wasn't able to get to the bottom of it and fix. For me this is the only big point of switching to new model.

@@Dimaniaxx yes the bike is so balanced and feels a lot lighter to move around than it should! The bladder fuel cells and low centre of gravity have a massive affect on handling. Combined with the slightly longer swing arm and engine rotated forwards. All together make a much more refined machine. The semi active suspension is amazing in my opinion. You really do feel the difference instantly at a push if a button. I have the tech pack and the customisation available is fantastic. Don’t forget the quick shifter! That’s butter smooth. There’s a lot going on with this S model. It’s the first bike I’d say is a real do all bike… it’s sensible when you want…and a right hooligan track day weapon in the right hands 👍

Hello Ricardo! I am experiencing a problem with my 1290 SAR 2021. In low rpms when I open the throttle I have multiple jerks...I am thinking it's this slight chain tension adjust but I am justing shooting this out check if anyone else does have the same issue. Especially in rain mode when I accelerate in low rpms the bike jerks so much that some times is dangerous if you are in a turn. I managed to reduce this behavior yesterday by turning the mtc and msr off and the abs in off-road mode. It seemed fine until a tight turn with low speed in 2nd gear tried to test it in this scenario and it did it again. Thank you.

Hello Abjure. Thanks for the message my friend! I have to say I personally have not experienced this. But have experience other issues equally as alarming. Unfortunately if you think there is a danger to how the bike is performing you really need to take it back to KTM and get them to inspect and test the bike. And also rectify this. Home diagnostic or online advice is and can be useful but anything like this on a brand new model bike which is still under warranty you take it back and get them to check. The only similar effect I have what you explained is if your in the wrong gear and need to change down. Sounds similar to a laboured engine. These big vtwin engines don’t like being laboured. Sorry if that doesn’t help you. But I do not have or experienced this. Cheers Ric

@@RicardoYeep today KTM did the update, the engine is running smoother a bit more powerful (I think) BUT the problem not solved. The technician believes the next step is to replace the throttle twist probably it is going to be covered under the warranty. This bike really is the best to ride but when you buy it of a premium price and the issues are coming from day 1 I am disappointed.

In fact two bikes purchased at same dealers have same issue. It seems everyone is trying to figure it out with no definitive answer. Hi I was at a ktm dealership and was told that the rivets on the chain has to be level with the cut out notch as the picture on the chain tenchion guard shows Hope this helps

Hi Paul thanks but I personally disagree. It does seem open to interpretation. However if you read the manual that notch Is for inserting a screw driver.. so practically speaking just based of that alone the rivet “won’t” be in line with the notch regardless of interpretation.. The interesting part is the screw driver should be pushing down on the chain and be “level” horizontal to ground at correct tension. The ambiguous part is how much tension should you be applying to make it horizontal?!! 🤦‍♂️ Either way I always apply reasonable pressure to gain horizontal state. I’m happy with that. Cheers Ric PS you’ll get a different opinion at different dealers lol.. believe me I’ve asked this at different places 🤣

Hey Ricardo, many thanks for all your vids, super useful. I came across this when looking to check my chain ( just hit 1000miles ) . Initially I thought it might have been too tight from the dealer but using a small spirit level on the screwdriver and pushing the screwdriver down on the top of the chain to make it taught ( as per the manual ) it is level with a reasonable amount of pressure , when I remove the screwdriver the chain moves up slightly as no longer under pressure and the rivet is now directly in line with the cut out when measured with the spirit level 🤷🏼‍♂️

Do you need to lubricate the chain on the 1290?

Yes any chain on a bike I’ve owned I always lubricate. Personally I just use spray lube or you can get a scotoiler system if you are that way inclined and like spending a bit 👍

Hiya Simon. Hmmm awkward one.. Yes there have been some things that I am not pleased about (understatement). I am trying not to think about it given this platform that has so grown fast. As i feel I could go to town on the things I have picked up myself caused by a poor PDI or Tech work on the bike that was not quite up to scratch. They have tried to make good and have helped me since.. So wont go down the name and shame route on that. I know these guys since lock down ceased are flat out and lucky to be in business still (some of them). And some running on short staff as a result. I am not being overly sympathetic but at the same time realistic. And they acknowledged errors and made good in some way. Which is good. Plus no harm came to me or the bike so again thats all good. Any other situation its a different ball park! Cheers Ric
