2020 WABDR Section 5 Chelan to Concunully

Washington Backcountry Discover Route WABDR Section 5 South to North. This is a pretty short section at under 100 miles. Not terribly difficult, but a big rock field took me out and I suffered the afternoon for my injury. This was from July 21, 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. We chose to not camp in Conconully for their safety and ours and instead found a hotel in Omak near a fantastic Mexican place that had great food and wonderful (healing) Margaritas and Tequila. The restaurant was "El Portal".

Hi Bob, love the videos. My husband and I are wanting to do this BDR. Your videos and experiences are helping us prepare. The video length, music, insights, and more difficult sections are much appreciated!!! Looking forward to watching more of your rides. Thank you, Julie

Ron & Julie - thanks so much for the compliments. My primary purpose in putting out videos is to provide what I felt I needed and wanted in prepping for rides - real looks at the challenges rather than a "it's easy" from an experienced rider. GOOD luck on your ride! WABDR is a lovely ride.

I also added a Recluse clutch on the F800GS I had. That was a great addition and really made the hills much easier.

Yeah the Rekluse is awesome. Have it on my 850 and on my WR250R both. Super happy with it.

Yeah? I remember that being the end of a tired day for me and just wanting off the mountain at that point without further challenges! :D

Great video, great ride, they don’t call it adventure riding for nothing :) sweet bikes! I’ve done section 2, 3 & 4 so far, just love being out there, enjoying the views, sweating a few parts of. Each sections, taking in the gorgeous views. We had Bluetooth coms, those are great to have, I use Sena 50. Hope summer 2021 find you out some more.

Hey Jan - heck yeah I always say "It's not an Adventure if you know exactly how it's gonna end." - I've got some off road training coming up at a rally over Memorial Day and forest riding next Yosemite. Then a long road-only trip in the fall up to Oregon and Washington with my wife riding her 750gs. Can't wait for that one!

Bob, you should check out the Scotts steering dampner. I added on to my Africa Twin and it makes all the difference in silty and rocky sections. Where you from in Montana?

Hey Chris - yeah I've considered a damper beyond the factory one which helps but isn't big-time like an aftermarket one. Def would have helped in a few different spots. The price and install are what stop me each time I look into it.

Ouch! Everything easy to straighten out (on the bike!)? And how are you liking the front springs? Any mods to the rear or does the active adjust it level ok? Cheers

No problem - when you see the video from Section 6 you'll see the windshield is not so wonky but still a bit. :) and the handlebars were just cocked 10 degrees or so no problem. I feel the factor front springs are mushy. I replaced mine after this trip with progressive ones. I have a full Wrenchin-With-Bob video series on it. I haven't gotten off road with the new springs though. As for the rear - the ESA is fantastic. Wouldn't change a thing.

Hi. I have a 850 gsa and I always have a very weird chain noise all the time. You have that too?

Hey there! It's rattle-clatter central down there but that's the centerstand bangin' around. I think I've see some remedies for that but it hasn't made my priority list. Chain for me seems fine, specifically.

Unwatchable due to what you apparently consider good music being what I consider obnoxious noise. And I don’t watch stuff with sound on mute.

Alrighty then. Mute the music and play your own?
