    Bought the qst 92 and i like them for the soft snow days they are really easy and stable. On the really hard snow they chatter a bit but that is a bit expected. I think Salomon makes solid performer in this category

    So Cody Townsend in one of his videos says one of the changes made to the QST 106 was making the tail easier to release in tight spots, do you guys think this is true with the 99 as well?

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    5 жыл бұрын

    You know, I thought that was something that the previous version did really well too. This new QST definitely isn't worse by any means, but I didn't notice a drastically different feel when releasing the tail edge. It is, however, overall smoother, so someone could definitely perceive that as feeling easier to release, just because it's a little less twitchy and reactive. The 106 does use slightly different construction in the tail compared to the 99 as well. Overall, I think it's definitely a ski that's easy to release in tight spots, especially compared to competitors' skis in this width range.

    I understand the difference in construction and width - but how much does it actually ski differently or similar to new The Enforcer 88 - a ski I purchased late last year thanks to the great review on this channel. The thing I love about the Enforcer 88 is that it holds an edge if it gets icy. Great review for what looks like a promising ski. Thanks. Paul

    Hey Paul! The QST 99 is more of a freeski-inspired all mountain ski. It's designed for more playfulness in soft snow, more maneuverability, and more float as well. You don't get the same edge grip as the Enforcer 88, although it's certainly no slouch. The 88 is also quicker edge to edge and more stable at speed, but the QST 99 outperforms it in most off-trail situations, especially if the snow is soft, deep, etc. It's a closer comparison to the Enforcer 100 realistically, or even the new Enforcer 104 Free. In Salomon's line, the XDR 88 would be the closest comparison to the Enforcer 88, although that ski is also a little more playful and forgiving, not as powerful, stable, or damp as the Enforcer.

    Thanks for a great review ! I am deciding between Salomon QST 99 and Atomic Bent Chetler 100. I do a lot of touring but I am also looking for a great downhill performance. I will use this ski mostly in backcountry and for a big mountain skiing. I do really like the new technology but the bent chetler looks great as well. Any suggestions ?

  • @SkiEssentials

    In my opinion, the QST 99 has better downhill performance. Better edge grip, more stability, etc. If you threw something like park skiing into the mix, or if you have more of a freestyle-backcountry focus, the Bent Chetler is great, but it sounds like you'll prefer the QST 99.

    Thoughts on this compared to the K2 Mindbender 98 and the Dynastar Legend 96?

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey Mason, sorry I never got back to you. Kind of a blend of the two to be honest. Mindbender 99Ti feels more powerful, but more demanding. The Legend 96 feels a touch more maneuverable in soft snow with the increased taper compared to the QST, but the QST has better float. Legend and QST are fairly similar, mostly a difference in shape concepts, although the Legend is a touch stiffer as well.

    The QST 99 seems very similar to the Rossi Sky 7 HD, how about a comparison between the two?

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    4 жыл бұрын

    QST 99 is more stable at speed by a significant margin. The Sky 7 HD is super light, agile, and quick, but doesn't have much stability at speed.

    I have been skiing on the faction 3.0 for 4 years now. As my new one ski quiver I’m looking at the qst 99 with a shift binding. How will it compare stiffness wise? Is it tourable?

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    2 жыл бұрын

    It's a heavier touring ski that's a bit stiffer than the 3.0. You can do it, and you get great downhill performance, but it's not the lightest setup.

    QST 99 for sure. It's more agile off trail and in general has a more well-rounded feel. The Vantage is great on firm snow, but has some limitations elsewhere.

    It’s shape reminds me of the Elan Ripstick line. How would you compare this to the Ripstick 96? Would the Carbon Edition change the analysis?

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    5 жыл бұрын

    They're definitely in the same league, although the QST does feel a little smoother overall. More vibration damping at speed and a little more stability than the 96. The 96 has such a round, relatively soft flex profile, which makes it really easy and fun to manipulate turn shapes, but it doesn't feel quite as stout at the QST 99. The Black, however, does take it up a notch.

    What kind of terrain do you ski mostly? How much fresh snow does your local mountain get? Hard to go wrong with the QST 99 as a do-everything ski, but it might be a bit wide if you don't get that much soft snow. Where do you live and ski?

    @@taliakellegg5978 I'd go QST 99 maybe even QST 106 if you're in soft snow a lot. Both of those skis are still pretty darn good on firm snow considering their width, and both will be a heck of a lot of fun in freeride terrain.

    The Blizzard Bonafide is about the same size. Care to compare them?

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey John! The Bonafide is very much one of those "two-sheets-of-metal" skis that Bob is referring to in this video. It outperforms the QST 99 in terms of power, stability at speed, and edge grip, but it's heavier, stiffer, uses less rocker, and is far more demanding. It's a less playful ski, and one that requires a seriously good skier to make the most of it. Really fun if you like skiing really fast in open terrain, but not quite as versatile as the QST 99. In my opinion, the Rustler 10 from Blizzard is a closer comparison to the QST 99.

    Mindbender 99Ti is stiffer, heavier, and more demanding overall. It's also more stable at speed and more powerful. QST 99 feels more well-rounded. It's not quite as powerful on groomers or as stable at speed, but it's easier to maneuver and has more of a surfy feel in soft snow.

  • @MadelnMachines

    @@SkiEssentials Thanks, the QST sounds great for me I think. Does it perform great as an all mountain ski. I worry 99mm might be a step too far away for piste but 90mm might be a step too far away from off piste. Any thoughts on length - I was thinking 177 for the mindbender - Not sure on the QST between 174 and 181 for the QST but I would like plenty of manouvarabilty in moguls and trees.

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    @@MadelnMachines I think you're totally fine going with the 99. It's not so wide that it feels sluggish edge to edge on piste, still performs quite well. Remind me of your height and weight. My instincts are 181 in the QST. A 181 QST is fairly similar to a 177 Mindbender in terms of "how much" ski it is.
