2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 | Review & Road Test

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

For the latest Mercedes-Benz GLC pricing and information:
www.kbb.com/mercedes-benz/glc/
If you were in here with me you might be able to smell that we’re in a Mercedes. The GLC 300 to be exact. If it smells this good, I wonder how the rest of this luxury two-row midsize SUV stacks up?
Well, it’s got gorgeous exterior styling with a just-aggressive enough front grille, standard LED headlights and some fancy redesigned LED taillights. Objectively this is a hot little number. Dig it in black, too.
Remember what I said about the smell?
Well, everything else inside lives up to it. Leather, optional wood trim, these awesome airplane-inspired vents. It’s all good.
There’s plenty of room for five occupants. In the second row, lots of head and legroom. Nice.
The 10.25-inch infotainment screen’s graphics are killer, though there is a bit of glare here and on the piano black. But even in this small guy, Mercedes hasn’t cheaped out.
A lot comes standard for your $43,495 including the destination charge.
Leather power heated seats that are uber comfortable, keyless start and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as Mercedes’s world-class infotainment system.
The MBUX interface takes a little getting used to, but once you do it’s outstanding.
And Mercedes gives you so many ways to operate it.
Touchscreen, this touchpad, buttons on the center stack, controls on the steering wheel on the right that control the touchscreen or on the left that lets you control things from the customizable digital gauge cluster. Pick your poison.
You can ask it to do stuff too. Hey, Mercedes, can you find me a burrito?

Okay out of the gate, I really enjoy driving this car. The ride is sporty but at the same time luxurious and comfortable. It’s got an optional air-suspension that we don’t have, but even the standard suspension feels great.
The steering feels so responsive but not overly electronic. It’s maneuverable and graceful but with some power. Viva, GLC!
That power comes from the new 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 255.
It’s turbocharged and good and torquey too, so feels quick when you need it.
Mercedes claims a zero-to-60-mph time of 6.1 seconds. For a two-row midsize SUV that’s jamming.
Shifts from the 9-speed automatic feel psychic. It knows when to hold ‘em, and when to shift ‘em.
There are paddle shifters here if you want to do it yourself, but I see no real need for that.
There are five drive modes that allow for different performance levels from sporty to eco-friendly.
And, there’s the gas-conscious start/stop system that can blessedly be disabled.
Of course, this is Mercedes and they offer the optional Driver Assistance package with varying degrees of active safety features like lane-keeping assist and some semi-autonomous driving stuff like lane-change assist and adaptive cruise control. I don’t have it on this tester, so I’m left to my own devices, but the good thing about that is the sticker price on this tester won’t be quite as shocking.
It’s just under $50,000.
Those driving assist goodies will cost you $1,700.
Other options for your driving pleasure are the all-wheel drive that will cost $2,000 as well as a more powerful plug-in hybrid engine with the GLCe (315 combined hp/516 combined lb-ft of torque).
There are high-performance AMG GLC models, but those aren’t this.
Other options include navigation, power tailgate, a 14-speaker Burmester audio system, and an outstanding 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
EPA numbers won’t break the bank for a luxury premium drinker. (GLC 300: 22/29 mpg, GLC 300 4Matic: 21/28 mpg) Numbers for the GLCe 4Matic plug-in hybrid are not currently available.
A number that is, however, is the price of that hybrid at about $53,00 out of the gate.
If you’re looking for competitors to be less expensive the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 aren’t, but the Lexus NX or Lincoln Corsair will definitely relieve you of less cash.
So, does the GLC 300 live up to the Mercedes badge and that great smell? Oh, yeah. Smells like compact luxury SUV success.

Awesome review! I love the GLC. A few mistakes, I noticed by the seat texture that this one had Mercedes' MB-Tex leatherette interior. Also, the air suspension that you mentioned is actually not available in North America, only in other markets. And finally, the power trunk is actually standard, not optional as you had said. Otherwise excellent review Lyn! You and Micah are two of my favorite car journalists out there! I love the KBB style of videos, and I love the chill relaxed, and comedic way you guys do your reviews!

@@ers1027 The GLC 300 used to have an optional air suspension when it launched in the USDM. Somewhere down the line MB removed that option. The GLC 43 and GLC 63 have an air suspension but I believe the dampers are firmer even in comfort mode given they're both AMG models.

Lol. I like how you mentioned the smell inside the car. People don't often talk about it but it is the best part for me. Mercedes, BMW and Audi have actually patented their smells. They each have a different smell so that you can tell it apart from other brands. So the new car smell of a Mercedes doesn't smell like any other car makers' new car smell. It smells, like you said, like Mercedes leather. And that's what they want.

We're leasing a 2019 GLC with the same engine, trans and RWD setup as this review model. This is not a sporty SUV. The ride quality is awesome, but this ain't no BMW, so I'm not sure what Lyn is talking about when she says it's sporty. It's quick enough but the engine sounds raspy like a diesel. Definitely opt for the Burmester stereo. The difference between the standard stereo and the Burmester is big. I'd pass on most of the other options as thing gets expensive fast. The quality of the backup camera is noteworthy in its goodness and clarity. Happy that it's standard. This is a REALLY nice cruiser SUV that gets decent mileage. It's hatch area is a bit on the small side compared to competitors, so make sure you check that out.

Well done on showing the natural speech recognition of the voice assistant. Most don't show this and give it commands that's too common or that other systems can understand too. So people don't realise that MBUX is more. It's contextual. Like you ask for a burrito and it didn't just say it didn't understand or pop up something random. It then actually searched for Mexican restaurants. That's clever.

I've been with the GLC 2017 since and had tried the 2020 also, it's the same. Suspension is the worst part on this car, it feels like a groceries cart whenever you drive on the slightest bad road (almost the same in the 2020) Transmission and throttle combo: is indeed super jerky when doing stop and go in either traffic jams or making quick stops.Just those 2 things are to the point that it's embarrassing to me whenever I have guests on board "my Mercedes" so I must be be extra careful about my driving to avoid those situations as much. Throttle is artificially slowed in an exaggerate way in comfort mode and very frustrating to me, I find it dangerous at times when you need to insert yourself in traffic from an intersection! this means you will never get the power you want when you need unless you almost floor the gas paddle and takes at least a good 2 secs. The sport mode is way better for that and I would keep it on at all times but 2 problems; 1) the RPM will raise by 1/2x1000more as long as sport mode is on 2) Even if you don't care about gas and pollution in sport you must enable back at every start of the engine. Sound system before 2020 is super bad! no bass, muffled sound no matter how you try to adjust it sound like ass, such insult at this price point, Kia as a way better sound system in my friend's sorento by far. Air suspension already leaking from visit to chalet, and no I have not used the car in any abusive way!! More very annoying things: after a while the center console cracks during driving as well as my driver's side door plastics. They did fixed it at the dealer by tightening the screws but it only lasted for a month! Then you also get the air-vent traps adjusting airflow inside the vents that started making noise every 20 seconds or so. For the 2020 I would also like to point out that they could have refreshed the outdated front grill design. I would also say that the paint is of a poor quality, not durable. the inner lower door steps will get rusty quickly. My recommandation: Don't buy! There are way better built and durable vehicles out there that will give you much better value for your $$ especially if you don't lease. And between the 2, as I also know BMWs, I believe the X3 is a much better car and experience all around.

Considering buying a low mileage 2020 with a Premium Plus with 4Matic. I reside in Canada so I'm assuming you're quoting U.S. prices. I'm not sure if the one I test drove had the air suspension but I know it was made in Germany. I found this car handled very well , had good ergonomics , surprising power for an inline 4 and very smooth electronic management like steering. Another quite noticeable asset was how quiet the cabin was at highway speeds. Any idea what a fair offer is for this particular one I'm looking at ?

Rented Mercedes GLC 300 when visiting fam in Boca. Tires were extremely bored so they upgraded me to a brand new range rover Valar! The Mercedes actually drove way smoother and felt like a car! Loved it! Still like the Audi Q5 better though! Thanking of an E class or a6! Or Lexus GS...Should probably get the Lexus but I’m in love with the Audi A6 and the e class!!! Ughh first world problems! Wait I forgot! The Mercedes especially the GLC 300 that I did drive even though they drove amazing it was cheaply made! Too much plastic and it didn’t even have leather I cannot believe that they are doing fake leather on a luxury vehicle! You will never see that from other high-end brands I don’t even count BMW because they just fallen off the wagon

The problem is Lexus' one operates like a computer mouse whereas Mercedes one operates like a selector button. The Mercedes interface is also much better designed to make use of a touch pad and you feel the clicks through the pad like you're pressing a button. They also then offer touch screen, plus a great voice assistant, plus the steering wheel pad all of which Lexus does not. That makes the Mercedes one far better. The problem is Lexus tried to do something different for the sake of being different instead of better. Lexus needs to try to stop copying the Germans and just do their own thing. The German cars used rotary control knobs many years back and Lexus thought their remote touch interface was the answer. They should've just copied the rotary controls. Unlike Lexus, Mercedes has spent way more time on making theirs intuitive and their infotainment system is in a way different league to Lexus outdated system .

Doesn't anyone remember the Mazda GLC? Isn't it kind of silly to name an upscale Mercedes the same as a little econobox from 40 years ago? Weak sauce.

I was expecting her to get out of the car and kiss the hood! She was gushing sooo much I had to force myself to stay till the end...not worth the effort. It's just a car!!! At least you won't have to spend money on replacing tires, according to this review it floats in the air...
