Re:vibration,I have done 500 mile days riding from SE Pennsylvania to Ohio and back and now have 2600 miles on mine total without any noticeable vibration issues. I get 65 miles(US) per gallon so the range is quite good. Ergonomics make standing off-road difficult,but it is good off paved roads. I love the bike.

I think vibration is subject to each individual. I suffer riding parallel twins and have also had issues with 4 cylinder machines, whereby my hands end up in total cramp. Yet riding singles I have no issue whatsoever.

Love these little bikes you can throw about, you can’t stop smiling while riding these.

I completely agree - lots to be said for small and light...

Small tip for getting it in neutral: give it a little bit of throttle (just above idle) and it'll go in neutral much easier

It's a trick I discovered on my first bike in the early 80's, that was a swine to find neutral and especially as a novice. I frustratingly struggled for the first few months of riding!

Great bike & review. Really like the small KTM range & they all seem superb fun & value for money.

I own the 2018 Duke and out of all the Honda's, Aprilia's, Moto Guzzi's I've owned the Duke by far has been the most joyful to own and ride.

I absolutely love mine. Barely been off it since buying. Great for commuting and longer distance playing. Pretty handy on Green lanes too (far exceeds its riders capabilities). Excited to take it further soon (lockdown permitting). I didn’t like the exhaust either, now has an aftermarket wings exhaust (road legal) sounds beautiful and looks way better.

Great first ride review of what could be a practical commuter, solo adventure bike and general fun tool. Looking forward to the forthcoming TMF 'dirty weekender' report. Maybe just repeat the day out that you recently aired (Range Rover to Salisbury Plain then CRF250 byway ride) as that would test both road and off road capabilities and the money you save on fuel by not using the Range Rover will pay for the comfort seat......? I really liked that review... although the conclusion was very much from the mindset of an off-road rider it seems - which is fair, it is Ryan after all! But really... how many people are actually buying this type of mini adventure bike to ride much more off-road than unsurfaced roads? It’s good feedback... but I can also see it being largely irrelevant to most of the core market - learners and restricted license holders who just want an adventure styled duke that can stand a bit less tarmac really.

@@jonpram1737 I take mine off road often in the Colorado mountains. It does excellent. You just have to keep speed appropriate for the suspension travel and the trail you are on as with all bikes. Also 40 years experience of riding off and on road on all kind of bikes goes a long way enjoying any bike off road and being able to take it into the rough stuff. Just know it's not a dirt bike and not meant to be.

@@jonpram1737 I brought my KTM 390 adventure for some hard enduro. Just not enough clearance. Well if you are Chris birch you won't have any problems, if you can double blip over the logs, but then again I would just ride my wr250F. This bike is good for commuting and some simple flat track or trail riding. Nothing hardcore. That said, I like this bike

@@jonpram1737 Well, i think the off-road review is important, because this is a bike that begs to be compared to a drz400. the DRZ is of course more offroad oriented (dual sport vs adv bikes), the ktm has more gears, injection, etc. So, it's important to know that it is very road oriented instead of 50/50

@@andrewstambaugh8030 that ithe 390 Adv not a 50/50 bike u can just see on a photo. Just doesn’t have the suspension like a wr250 or crf250l. No review needed to see that. Not hating on the bike I personally think some hardcore enduro guys just shout the hardest on new adventure bike reviews.. I live in Holland so I need to ride to different countries for some proper off-road. For my money it would be the 390 all the way

Owened this bike, LOVED IT! traded it for a 350 dual sport, because I thought I"d be doing more hard core enduro stuff, and ended up buying a dedicated Enduro dirt bike (KTM 250 XC-W TPI) instead, and I now miss having the 390. You get the right mods in there (ergo seat, spoked wheels, bar risers, and dirt bike style pegs... It becomes a capable off-roader, while maintaining the in tow and on road capabilities well.

Tested it in semi busy city. Loved it. Was heating a bit, but it was hot summer day. Vibrations are there, and really shouldn't. They fked up the mounting of rubbers on pegs. They should be sticked into (like in Triumph Street scrambler i.e.), instead of beeing screwed - that literally removed the whole point of these rubbers. Other then that, great bike. Missed some better sound from the pipe, and a bit of more umph would be good outside of the city. But if any1 tells you that this bike isn't big enough for city, i'm 100% they don't know how to ride a bike :) Gr8 deal if you want the plastic fresh, and no buttprint on the saddle. If that doesn't scare you, plenty of bikes on the used market, that are "better" :)

Looks like a decent top 10 replacement for my CRF250L. Good initial review and looking forward to hearing more about it.

I got this bike with the seat from the Powerparts and its a lot more comfortable. I could ride rof hours on it. Its a must for this bike

i was thinking about snagging a little 300cc to have something to commute on and for messing about days, and so its nice to see all the options coming out these days, i really like the g310gs and the duke, but its cool to see the adventure market expanding, still praying for the day triumph releases some low displacement bikes. Great review as always. I know you primarily do 2 wheel reviews but it would be so cool to see you on the can am ryker rally, wanna see one of those beauties rolling around ol blighty

It’s great bike and it really surprised me. The first ride was a 3 hour route home largely on country lanes and it was lots of fun. I agree the seat becomes uncomfortable after about an hour and half. But all round its very capable, even on some local green lanes. Great first ride review as usual.

i've had a 390duke for three years now. yes it's a lot of fun in the twisties, yes it eats traffic for breakfast, it's even a godsend on bumpy roads because of the upright position that allows to stand up on the pegs (i live in Rome and the roads are a pot-hole/pine-tree-root hell) and generally it's always satisfing when i feel a little crazy. where the little thing fails miserably is relaxed cruising. sometimes you just wanna get there you know, no fun, no throwing the fun machine around, just sit and get there... and it really doesn't have the engine. i'm seriously thinking about getting a bigger front sprocket. it'll make it less fun but a bit comfier to cruise on.

RyanF9 commented on the footpegs being angled forward on their review. Said the bike keeps wanting to pitch him over the handlebars when riding stood up. Would like your thoughts on that. I'm really liking this bike to be honest. Thanks for another great video. Can't wait for you to take it offroad. 😄

Alway state I'm a old school sports tourer fan, and not so much into adventure bikes, however if I was to go down that route this small light weight that could tackle a bit of light off roading seems the way to go, and well priced too, so look forward to your future Vlogs. Cheers TMF

i started with this one as my very first bike (i upgraded to a moto guzzi v85 by now) and it was a perfect choice decent but not too much power and super light as you mentioned, but what really stands out imo is the security the modern electronics provide for this price with the lean sensitive abs you can grab your brakes in a curve with no problem if you really need to

Thanks for the review. UK expat trying to decide between this and 2021 G310GS as both would be perfect for where I currently live in the Philippines. KTM is edging it I reckon - cheaper than the BMW here too!

Wish the Japanese still made mid and large capacity singles, my favourite bikes have been Japanese singles and they are the only people who have ever made truly reliable bike's in my experience

Gday mate good review on this bike ,at least ktm got there switch gear in the right order unlike on my cb500x where the horn is above the indicators wanted to give someone a quick blast the other day and found i was pressing the indicator switch be interesting to see after you have had it a while i had to lower my cb 500x as i didnt feel comfortable on the ball of my foot but all good now might look into those grip puppies as my throttle hand goes numb after about an hour not good ,anyway ride safe .

The screen can be mounted in a lower or higher position and 2 windshields of caring lengths can be ordered (KTM Aus website)

I like that bike. Looks good (unusually for a KTM) & nice & light. I was thinking of a Fantic Caballero for my new off-roading machine, but that’s put the cat amongst the pigeons is a bit. It’ll be interesting to see how you go off road. Looking forward to that! You did a few local lanes on your little Honda a few years ago if I remember. Those would be a good test before it gets too wet. Cheers bud!

Did almost 2000 miles in 6 days riding around Scotland on my Fireblade, i was in agony by the end, recently bought on of these 390 adventures and i think it's really comfortable and have no issues with vibration

I can’t wait to get back to Blighty (or just Europe) to test ride some adventure bikes. They are unicorn rare in Vietnam. If you can find one they are double the price of Europe.

Was going to get the 390 Duke a couple of years ago to commute on. Did lots of research and found too many horror stories on reliability so went for a Ninja 400 and 10,000miles later in all weathers, the Kawasaki hasn’t missed a beat.

I got the duke, 2 years, 20,000km and just normal services, tyres, chain and sprockets to date. And it’s my every day ride to and from work, rain hail and shine. We can lane split and lane filter, and the high seat position makes that a breeze

Ah Wendover..... takes me back to my days at RAF Halton....I used to glide from the airfield over the Chilterns... lovely part of the world....I have GS800, KTM 950SM and a Piaggio Medley 150. Thinking to get the 390 for a bit of light fun...

I'm gonna buy the Duke 390 in LOS, maybe next year. I'm currently riding around on my GSXS 150....plenty fun for my environment ...for now....555.

I just saw a ktm 1190 Adventure review. A real capable bike but a widow maker!

Thanks for the first impressions. It sure is a good looking bike except for all the plastic on the "dash". Ryan at Fortnine reviewed this bike. He mentioned the pegs being slanted forward making it difficult to stand, the low ground clearance and the stubby front tire. Curious to see if those are issues for you. I wonder how it might compare to a Honda CB 500X - that's a bike I have my eye on. Cheers.

Yes I made this video before Ryan posted his so I can guarantee I wasn't influenced by his film - I liked this bike far more than he did it seems!

Just got myself one last week here in India. We get it at a take home price of 3500 quid and 15 quid for a service with an oil and filter change and u can thrash it around without a worry.

Looks like a great bike for the smaller person (me). I'm after a beginner small, big bike with green lane potential. It ticks alot of boxes for me but I hate the KTM front end treatment and I'm not one for orange either!

For Australian conditions where we do a lot more off road I would probably go for the Himalayan. KTM would be the better road bike. Put an Akrapovik can on the Enfield, you can play a really nice tune through the hills.

Coincidence:Mine having its 1st service today:The screen adjusts upwards with screw removal on headlight(add a extender as well).If you are 6' and above you will need bar risers( a must for off rd) + skid plate.I have ordered a soft seat.Actually a great communter as you said and fun for light off rd(I have changed mirrors for off rd and put Akro exhaust on).Cheers

I've just bought one, its got 100 miles on it so far, brilliant little bike. been isolating since getting home so not had the chance to get out on it any more. I agree about the mirrors and exhaust entirely which are easily swapped. built-in sat nav is useful and I found a free app called "Turn by Turn" that uses whatever nav app you happen to have, I'm using TomTom, rather than the £7.99 KTM My ride one. I'm planning a trip to Normandy on mine in the spring conditions permitting.

Well I'm not really into off roading so would personally go for the Duke 390, but that's only a personal preference, this bike shares it's DNA and has a very similar grin factor...

Silver Arrow - I only had access to the BMW R18 from a dealer for a single test ride, the bikes you see me doing multiple videos on are those that manufacturers themselves lend me for a period of weeks from their press fleets - sadly I don't yet think the R18 is available to me from BMW UK themselves...hopeful I can bring you more videos on it next year though once it is....

Sounds like the ergo seat (+5mm) then the lowering (-20mm) would be a good couple of upgrades for you.

Had the Duke 390 based on your review, loved it but my 6’1” frame was just too big really and I swapped it for an old GS!!

Yes I'm 5.11 and most of the bikes now look too tiddly for me . Being 18 stone doesn't help either. Going to have to be a versys or vstrom for me

I am 6ft 3 and 15.5 stone and find mine comfortable and capable. The KZreadr "The Lofty Biker" is 6ft 5 and 17stone and his review agrees. I find the VStrom performs the same, but is much heavier.

Love mine but prefer it in white as I'm not too keen on too much KTM orange. I had to fit an Akrapovic as my lawn mower had a better soundtrack and it looks much better too. For me, it's a really good value, fun to ride second bike to try a few green lanes on etc. although I'd say it's perfectly good enough as an only bike. It's surprisingly punchy for a smaller capacity single cylinder bike. I have the quickshifter which is indeed an option but the jury is out on reliability. Mine has been at the dealers for a week with ECU failure but I'm sure they'll get it sorted.....😯

Oh dear sorry to hear that Steve - which dealer do you use?? The guys at The KTM Centre in Hemel are brilliant....and I'd love to hear your lawn mower!

That bum trauma sounds a worry! :D hahaha Would have been nice if it had Fat bars, may help reduce the vibes a bit. MVDBR Enduro have one of these that they properly take off road and it does really well! I think had I not gotten a Beta Alp 4.0 as my first recent dirtybike, this would have done well as a modern alternative. I am very much looking forward to the rumoured 490 Adventure... a twin so less stressed than this 390... and hopefully a stronger clutch. This looks mint, and from the vids I have seen is way capable as a dualsport A bike! :-)

Good to see they removed the corned beef sticker from the side of the muffler. Looks like a fun bike.

Great video again.. I've been trying to find a small adventure bike I like the BMW G310GS but this KTM is quite nice too.. I need a second bike for commuting ect and being able to do some light green lane riding would be great. I've been trying to find a 400 or 450cc twin, but doesn't seem to be anything on the market.. So it might be the baby BM but Ii will have to be a 2021 model because for some silly reason on the 2022 models you can't switch the abs off.. which to me is a bit stupid on a bike made for on and off road.. The suspension is a bit of a let down too on the BM, I will have to spend another £1000 to upgrade and pay someone to do the work as I'm to old and suffer with arthritis, so can't do the work myself these days, and for a ex mechanic it's hard letting someone else work on your vehicle and have to pay them to do so.. Anyway I wish there was more choice for small to mid size adventure bikes.. I think the manufacturers are missing out.. Thanks again for another great video.. always love your content.. "Cups your buttocks" with appropriate (or inappropriate) hand signals. I think there was an 'Ooo Matron' moment on the R18 video when you overtook a 'young lady'. I love the TMF "Carry on up the double entendre" moments!

Seen on other neviews that it will top out at 169 KPH, 105 MPH. The 2022 has some inprovements.

It’s seems a miss that they didn’t offer cruise control. KTM loves their tech but somehow forgot this necessary bit for touring and motorway commutes.

The bike has a few issues, after 6500kms I have... * condensation in the tft display * condensation in the front light * play in the rear sprocket * vibrations in the front brake * ignition can be a bit fiddly to get the key to turn. ...so I'm thinking the build quality is not all that great. However, it is a lot of fun. You can be a real hooligan on the twisties. And I have taken it for a proper Norwegian adventure ride with a hammock and all camping gear, did lots of gravel roads and some light dirt. The bike performed well as long as the dirt was dry, the tires aren't really up for any mud. Can't wait to go riding again this weekend :-)

The play in the rear sprocket is normal as there are rubber inserts in the hub to reduce shock being transmitted from the sprocket to the cast aluminum wheel hub.

@@gpnmoab1 I replaced the rubber inserts on my cbr600, and there was no play after that, so I wasn’t expecting any play in a new bike. Had the dealer check the bike yesterday and like you’re saying a bit of play is normal.

@@Ocean4Life I noticed the play when I adjusted the chain after the first 400 miles. Personally I believe there should be no play, why would you design it that way? But since it was virtually new I have to assume they intended it to have play.

@@gpnmoab1 yeah, beats me too. But it’s been checked and cleared by the dealer. I noticed play in the rear sprocket in one of the shots in this video too, when he went from N to 1st. Guess it’s by design

Love your reviews though I do disagree on seats being too hard. I haven't met a soft OEM seat that I don't crash through to the pan after an hour's ride. Sargent and Corbin seats seem like rocks at first but they're perfect if you tend to spend long hours on a bike. Much more comfortable that sitting on an oddly shaped seat pan all day.

Must be a personal taste thing - I hate hard seats....

Enjoyed that -- thanks. Ryan at FortNine described it as a street bike with adventurous plastic! But then his expectations of what an adventure bike should be capable of off-road are likely not the same as yours TMF, or the majority of adventure bike owners for that matter.

People have turned their Duke 390's into an adventure bike. I think it's just the fact this has not much suspension travel still has cast wheels and minimalist ground clearance.

Range with a 14.5 litre tank - "well over a 100 miles" - Triumph put smaller tanks on some of their 1200cc bikes. I would hope for 60/70 mpg from a small single cylinder, well over 200 miles perhaps.

Good old honda xr600r is 146kg wet. 158kg is anything but light! If I remember correctly the ktm 640 adventure was 158ish dry.

Not a bike that interests me but good video. The switchgear looks superior to some much more expensive bikes.

Was that an Allen key bolt in the front of the screen? Looks like if you un screw it the screen may be adjustable?

Prefer the look of the adventure to the standard 390 , and for the money a go anywhere bike, would make a cracking 2nd bike

Thanks Andy...ust rented one in Italy....perfect for lowish speeds but I found the vibes and buffeting too much at motorway speeds....not sure if that's juat a feature of all single cylinder bikes?

Yes it possibly is - vibration kind of comes with the territory.....

Blundered into this bike at the dealer a couple weeks back (they also have a killer deal on a 2019 Goldwing that I'm trying real hard to avoid.... :^) ) and dang, I fit it fairly well (lanky fellow with 36" inseam). Started looking into it and was getting really impressed when I found out a 490 Adventure is due in the spring. A bigger machine for eating the Western US roads would be closer to ideal where as the 390 seems ideal for the rides I see you and your mates on. So I'll wait to see how the 490 is. I'd go for the CB500X but the weight gives me pause. When all is said and done; I'd be interested to see if you would be willing to trade in your CRF250 for this 390.

Me too. Desire 490 for California speed and range. Was told at the dealership that US bikes do not have the quick shifter, which was a disappointing surprise upon going in for a look see last week. Btw, does anyone know what fuel it drinks ? Regular or premium octane ?

Man, I just traded in my 2017 crf 250l for a 2020 versys x300, I love it so far !

The vibrations are a deal killer for me. Probably get a crf300l rally or a klr 650.

I will take single cylinders over twins any day, Have a DR 650, a Suzuki s40 650 single, and a Versys 300 X twin, thinking to trade the versys in for the KTM 390 Adventure, than I will have all singles. I had a Royal Enfield 500 single and loved it as well. Had to many twins and 4 to list, from 250 cc to over 1000 cc , and now all I want is singles love the sound and feel of them. By the way the KTM 390 Adventure has no competition, nothing in that size comes as equipped as the KTM 390, adjustable front shocks, and rear shocks , ABS for on road and one for off road, traction control you can turn off to name a few. That puts it in a class of its own the others, have a long way to catch up. Not that they are not good bikes they are just in a different class. KTM should of put the Dunlop TrailMax Mission tires on this bike, and I would like a larger gas tank. I can over look the gas tank but will be putting Dunlop TrailMax Mission tires on if I get one as well as the aluminum bash plate, heated grips, and side and top racks that can take the GIVI Trekker 33/46 liter bags. ( have them on my Versys and love them, also can put the 46 liter on top of my DR650.) Liked your review, but don't know why you are putting down single cylinders.

I own a a Honda fmx 650 air cooled single de- corked, flat/slide carb done many 200+mile trip love it. This bike is looking like a good replacement with equal performance better mpg lower tax..

Hehe...."cross rivers and stuff" :))

Looks like it would be a great bike to get to the green lanes.
