2020 Ford Escape | The Turbo Alternative

For 2020 Ford has completely redesigned their compact crossover to directly target the top-sellers in the segment. With a standard 1.5L turbo engine, the Escape gives us better performance and better fuel economy than most of the competition and the optional 2.0L turbo and the new 8-speed automatic make the Escape one of the best performing compact crossovers under $40,000.

Sorry for the long post. This is written from the heart! I just bought a RAV4 Hybrid last weekend after the worst car owning experience in 40 years of owning cars. The all time WORST experience (out of 11 vehicles) was owning a Ford Fusion, 2010. I bought it new, and I am super careful to get my cars regular maintenance. It had 106,000 miles as of last Sunday. This Fusion was recalled three times, once for a bad fuel tank-which had me in a rental for NINE MONTHS, and for a faulty passenger seat back (ever since, that seat squeaks), and for the airbag thing-had me in a rental for another 3 months! The driver side door handle broke twice for no reason, (the Ford guy at the dealership said "They make these things out of such cheap plastic!"). The sunroof, which we almost never used, one day just didn't slide back and it was a cheap piece of plastic that had somehow broken-and it took several days to repair, taking the entire ceiling out-and then they put it back in sloppily and with a wire poking out. The latch for the little compartment on the dashboard never worked properly-my wife gave up trying to open it years ago. The faring under the front bumper constantly dragged on curbs until the entire front threatened to drop off. In addition, the CD player stopped working, and the tire pressure sensors, the check engine light, the door open light all were on constantly with mechanics saying it's just the sensors malfunctioning. So we drove for many months with these meaningless warning lights from crappy sensors. But then the wrench emblem light came on just a couple of weeks ago the engine actually died at a stop light. This happened a few times and I decided to take it in for a major inspection and service at the dealership. They found a faulty canister purge flap and fuel filler flap. The engine mounts have collapsed, so the car vibrates a lot. The throttle body had to be replaced for free (another factory recall issue I guess). To fix everything to get this car up and going would cost about $3000. That's way more than the KBB value. The trade in I got was $500!!! When I bought this Fusion, Motor Trend named it 2010 Car of the Year. I always wanted a Ford! This was exciting. It looked like a real semi-luxury sedan. I had every intention to drive it for 150,000- to 200,000 miles and get a decent trade at the end after maybe 15 years. We took care of the car, and I don't race or do anything stupid. I commute and maybe put 12,000 per year on it. The car has never seen a dirt road and I live in California where the weather is pretty mild. The only thing I can take away from my true experience with this car and Ford as a company is that it was built to impress enough to be driven off the lot, but NOT to last! It's quiet and comfortable, which is why I bought it. But the actual materials and systems are shoddy and super cheap. The bewildered look I got from the mechanic when he was telling me what a turd my car was...VERY telling! They KNOW it is a lousy product! That's the feeling at the dealership from the little store to the parts department to the "Quick-Serv" desk. The many Toyota's I have either owned or known well through family and friends my whole life have been overwhelmingly reliable! I will never, ever buy another Ford product.

Thanks for the great review...I am an Administrative Lieutenant with the Sheriff’s Office in my area and we purchased four of the 2020 S models for some of our school resource Officers. This past Wednesday I went from a 2004 Crown Vic to a 2020 SE model for my assigned vehicle. I thought it was going to ride rough, have no power, be noisy and have no room. Was I pleasantly surprised. Has plenty of power, great ride, quiet and plenty enough room. I actually really like it so far and personally I have a 2020 Ford Explorer Limited with a 2.3 twin turbo ecoboost. For the money I really like the 2020 Escape so far and comes standard with a lot of features. If I had a complaint it would be that the seat appears to be stiff on the back at the bottom and has a little hump that presses against my lower back and is a little uncomfortable and I hope it softens up after use. If I was going to by one personally it would be the Titanium because I like leather and all the goodies. Oh and when I first saw them thought they we ugly but the look is growing on me. Thanks again.

I just realized it is a little bit lower than my 2015 Ford Escape. I loved the Car Apple Play in it. I’m getting better on cruise controls. It is so smooth in driving it.

I have a 2014 Escape Titanium that I bought in late 2016. It has only 43000 miles on it. Just this week I ran into a shop and a few minutes later got in my car and tried to back out of my parking space and my power steering went out. The error message was Power Steering Assist Fault -service required. This was estimated to be a $2300 repair - on a car with only 43k miles. I will never buy another Escape.

This new Escape also has engine options and better performance than the Forester, I sure wish Subaru would add they're new regular gas 2.4 Turbo with its solid mpg figures as an option, but Sadly they don't want to give people options...Thanks again, Ford.

What bothered me with Ford’s last generation Escape is that the power figures and fuel economy for the EcoBoosts were tested with 91 octane fuel and were worse with 87 octane. Their advertised MPGs weren’t even close to the real world use, even with premium fuel. With 87, it dropped even more. I’m afraid that still holds true with the 2020 model’s EcoBoosts too.

I'm not saying the new Escape isn't a nice car, but 40K is a lot of money. I would either go with a more affordable trim or opt for a different vehicle. Even if they discount it 5K after it has been out a few months. it still is priced up with some really nice cars. If I were buying now I would get the Ascent premium trim as our dealer has on on his lot for 37k . Towelie mentioned the Telluride or Pallisade which also would be worth looking at.

I was ready to upgrade from my 2017 until it became clear that the cargo area behind the back seat had been reduced by a fair bit and doesn't serve my needs for dog and cargo very well anymore. Very good review, Alex! The lease on my 2017 Fusion SEL will be up shortly and I am looking to upgrade into an Escape. I'll probably take the Escape SE model. I won't be giving up much stepping down one series. In fact, the Escape SE will have equipment I don't currently have on my Fusion SEL. Good to know Ford has been making 3-cyl engines in Europe for some time now. I currently have a 1.5T GDI 4-cyl which has the same hp (181) as the new 3-cyl. The Escape is a well-packaged compact CUV. I look forward to driving it.

As a Ford guy I love the design and the fact that it has a Teutonic feel to it. As a man who is 6’2 and is mostly torso and longer in the thighs, shorter in the calves I’m going to have to see if I’m comfortable with the seats. I wish that it had extendable seat bottoms like many cars have such as Lincoln’s so that I could be assured. In view of our looming inflating fuel prices this appears to be a great vehicle for the decade.

That was going to be my observation too. I've seen a few Escape videos now, and it appears that the dark grey trim color on the doors is the only one available. And those cheap diamond pattern panels are hard plastic in the rear doors, as opposed to the soft touch material in the front seat area. I expect that Ford will get a lot of negative feedback on this and will make changes in the following year.

Mark almost everyone uses hard plastic in the rear but I wish it was softouch also. My 2016 Cherokee has that but think they went back to plastic in the rear. Need to move up a class to get that in both.

First ever heads up display in a Ford and they had to go with the cheeseball plastic sheet method rather than the windshield projection method most manufacturers have gone to? That's pathetic. There are cars costing thousands less than a loaded 2020 Escape that use the projection method, so it's not just luxury cars that have that feature. Really not surprising though since Ford has always had cheap plastic interiors, even in their loaded $70K+ luxury trim trucks.

19:30 The Escape doesn't look bad from this angle. Even the front end. I think Ford overdid it with those side scallops in the doors though. A bit too deep.Almost looks like someone ran a shopping cart into the side while it was parked at a grocery store. Ford also went Frumpy on the wheel designs. The 17" alloys look virtually identical to the hubcap covers on the steel wheels for the base trim. Why Ford? Really you couldn't come up with a sporty 5 spoke wheel design or something? Would have improved the looks. Overall I wouldn't mind owning one. Think Ford did a good job overall.

A little jealous that the Escape has an optional HUD and the 12.3” gauge cluster shows the full size tachometer in all driving modes. Hopefully ford can update the Explorer’s software to look like the Escapes as I prefer not having a large blank section in my gauge cluster. Instead of an Escape - and we have owned 2 as well as a Mercury Mariner - I purchased a Jeep Cherokee this last time. V6, 9 speed auto, all the goodies, $36K. In 15,000 miles, I am averaging 28 mpg. which I consider excellent for a V6. On trips with the cruise on and a steady 65-70, I have achieved 33 mpg on some tanks. I do not use the lane keep assist or the automatic parking. Both are worthless as far as I'm concerned. Blind spot monitoring is so-so as far as usefulness. I think it would be more valuable if the warning light flashed in the lower corners of the windshield than a little yellow arrow on the outside mirrors. Why would I want an Escape with a 3 or 4 cylinder?
