    The rule book says, Murray. That you must first purchase an ANSI approved toilet paper holder, from a verified Dealer. Then, proceed by tightening a piece of 2-ply TP between the arms, at the ANSI specification of 6 inch pounds, before proceeding! : - )

    I'm pretty sure it is just referring to the motion of the knife. You push it through the paper, instead of pulling it through. Either way the knife is slicing or cutting...

  • @nietztsuki

    Ray-- You are absolutely correct. I love Murray Carter, but that was not a push-cut. A push-cut is where you put the blade at one spot, and push straight down against the object you are attempting to cut. That's why it's so hard to achieve, and is the gold standard for sharpness. The motion that Murray was attempting, both with the paper towel and the toilet paper, was a run-of-the-mill slicing cut.

  • @evaderknives

    @evaderknives

    @@nietztsuki Well, if that was the case, then someone can have one spot sharp and cut through just about anything, what he was doing was testing the whole blade... I don't know, all those test are just for show anyways. Holding the edge is much more important than cutting paper...

    @@evaderknives Yes, correct. That's why for a true push-cut test one repeats the push-cut several times, using different parts of the blade. There are lots of sharpening videos on KZread showing push-cuts. This is common knowledge.

For a 1K stones it's definitely one of the better ones. The one I'm most impressed with though is the King 300. It's super hard and does not dish at all. Quite fast too and leaves a decent edge on it's own. My favorite ~coarse stone

    Your original challenge was the first instruction vid of yours I watched! I've learned so much watching your videos and use the King stones and your technique because of your advice. As a beginner of this craft, I've found that even though the King stones may take more time, this repetition ("more elbow grease") is necessary and allows the beginner to establish neural coordination through repetition and simplicity since the two grits force you to be more aware of the progression and condition of the blade. It seems to me that throwing more things into the mix just distracts from the ultimate objective. In one of your earliest videos, a vignette commentary, you speak about the tendency of N. Americans to spend a bunch of money to get results. The appeal of your method to me at the time was that of simplicity and not having to spend a bunch of money on a lot of stones and accessories to get results. I think I'll still continue to use my board, a kitchen towel, and the 1000/6000 King. It just seems to be more Zen.

    To me all theese sharpness tests are way overated. If it push cuts normal magasine papper its easily sharp enough to cut everything in the outdoor or kitchen. How one deburr either cutting it off or the wrong method by flipping it back and forth has much more to say as it Creates metal fatique in the edge. The blending of the edge into the profile and thinnes of edge and durability of edge and edge angle etc etc have way more to say in how the blade cuts than the very sharpness of the apex.. If someone questions your edges they dont know anything about sharpening as you know your stuff

    It amazes me how many of you can come to the conclusion that you did and pointing out to Carter he's not push cutting. If you watched his very first video on this channel, the one he even referred to in this video, the one where he first did the same test 10 years ago he did a push cut after bunch of slice cuts. So obviously he knows what a push cut is. So then what happened here? It's obvious to me that after sharpening you start with a slice cut to see if you can even do that, if not then go back to sharpening, if can then you move on to a real push cut. Here Carter did a slice cut and immediately didn't like the result or at least thinks it's no improvement to 10 years ago so a push cut isn't even necessary. In the 10 year video his knife couldn't or barely could initiate a push cut, so it's likely to be the case here as well so he just humbly conceded.

    I was thinking maybe you have misunderstood the pushing toilet paper challenge. Perhaps the guy was asking you to roll up some toilet paper, and push cut the roll, just like the Japanese swordsman practicing their katana slicing through a rolled up bamboo mat. This is just my guess but for the record, the legendary master grinder Master Chan in Hong Kong would test his sharpened knige by cutting through a rolled piece of cotton cloth rolled to a half inch diameter bar shape.

But its amazing to watch. Side note, use thick hair! My fine hair will leave zero doubt about the fineness of a blade edge.

    @@IRMalcolm It is possible, especially if you hold it under tension, you can find video's of it done. It takes a really high polish and normally even then a few tries to stop it from ripping because that type of paper is not designed to be cut/tore it is cross grained and really weak so it buckles easily under tension.

    @@rickodonnell2243 No, I played around with it awhile enough to realize it takes a really high polish and ideally very low angles to do a push cut, there are people on the forum I run who can do it on a regular basis, keep in mind they often run really low angles and that will make any cutting test much easier.

Next is the legend, best, etc. Titles...is just something that everyone and every business use, marketing strategy... Now talking about Mr.Carter ... look his professional history and it will tell you a few things.. is he the best?.. well, nobody can claim that since it is pretty much a personal opinion, so what you like the next person to you may not. Is that a bad product?
