    BMW was ALWAYS about the drive not the interiors. Now they’ve become obsessed with marketing for the masses, kinda shameful as the ride has become fluff and steering close to numb. But the interiors are nicer, but that’s never been the reason to purchase a bimmer.

  • @JacesOwnWorld

    @JacesOwnWorld

    362chop I agree somewhat with you. BMW has definitely always been about the drive, but when they incorporated the 5-series and 7-series, and up, those cars were more about the luxury, not the drive. The 3-series, 1 & 2-series were more about the drive. BUT at the prices they have always been, which have been expensive, I expect there to be luxury as well. If you wanted a pure driver oriented car, the Honda S2000 was perfect. It was cheap enough for a normal person to own. If BMW didn’t care about luxury, then their prices should be like the S2000, but BMW has always been expensive.

    @@JacesOwnWorld agree, i turned away from BMW for a few years (before ordering the M340i), because 1/ the drive became meh but also 2/ interiors felt stuck in the 90ies. I find the E46 M3's interior aged better that the F30 3 series. They also looked far from great in the early 2000s. This 3 series, exterior wise, not the best looking car. C class and S5 sportback are nicer to me. Interior however is sweet, like a cockpit for the driver. Love it. Best of the 3. @362chop, BMW makes 7x the margin on a 7 series VS a 3 series. They can't produce enough 7 series to meet demand in China. They convey the image that the drive is everything, but they make money on luxury car buyers, drivers are less important revenue wise. So no they can't afford to have bad interiors. You are a certain type of BMW enthusiast, the drive centric guy, and guys like you keep them in check when they do a average car like the last 3 series, but with guys like you alone it wouldn't be sustainable :)

    I really liked how you mentioned that cars are becoming so much more powerful nowadays, that the horsepower figures that were once only seen in exotics can now be found in your mom’s comfy SUV. It really makes me think that although this BMW is not intended to be an “m” car, the performance sure would have made it one about 15 years ago. I feel like 800-1000hp is now considered fast today where 500hp was crazy back in the day. It’s very interesting to see how the times are changing and it’s eye opening how desensitized we are to the power these cars put out!

    Focusing on the BMW though, I love the design of this new 3 series, I had a co-worker get one and I took it for a spin and even the four cylinder will pin you in the back of your seat.This is the first BMW I ever drove and when they say that this is the ultimate driving machine, they weren't kidding. Unfortunately, my only gripe is the lack ofcooled seats. Not a deciding factor but just rubs me weird that car that is supposed to be "premium" doesn't have them. Also, I wish the reflectors were a bit lower on the rear bumper, but other than that, love the sedan! I'm probably going to wait till the M440i to come out before I buy one of the newer beamers.

    Dylan Wells true. I will say a 500hp 400+tq car still feels plenty fast. For me having 400+hp is something I can easily handle, after having practice with cars in that range. It’s enough power to teach me how to control the car in all aspects. 200hp just isn’t enough to teach someone how to actually handle a car in tracking situations. But 600+hp is getting to the point where you can’t do anything with the car on the street except straightline pulls. Still though, they are fun!

    You’ve got to remember, the E92 M3 had more hp than this M340i, but the E92 M3 didn’t even have 300lb/ft of torque, which honestly is why the E92 M3 can easily get beaten by little 4-Cylinder turbo cars of today. This M340i has quite a bit more torque than the E92 M3 does, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the M340i is faster, off a line easily because AWD, but even from a roll, due to it having more torque. The powerband is probably better in the M340i than the E92 M3.

    M340i will kill it off the line, will be easier to drive in all conditions. On a dry surface once rolling the F80 M3 takes it and over 100mph should pull a lot harder. But most people cant handle 450bhp through the rear wheels. I would take the M340i and remap it to 450bhp with custom exhaust and then you have more than enough car. It's way nicer inside as well. You have to remember that the handling of this car is exactly the right blend between comfort and performance for the vast majority of buyers of this car. I have one ordered and I drove a new G80 M3 comp side by side with the 340i and an F90 M5 non-comp and the M5 was the best blend of power, comfort and luxury but a bit more than what I wanted to pay. The M340i felt (and looks) like a slightly smaller F90 where it still retains very comfortable road manners for daily driving/commute but is just sport enough that it doesn't feel sloppy. The M3 was much firmer and tighter and sharper... a double edge sword. Personal option but I also felt like the M340i sounded MUCH better inside and out vs the M3. The M340i had the M-sport exhaust which I also added to my order.

    The M340i and the Supra do NOT share the exact same ZF transmission, but close. The BMW M240i, M340i, X3 M40i and X3 20D use the ZF 8 HP50 (2nd Generation ZF transmission), the Supra uses the 3rd generation ZF 8HP51 -they're both rated to 500nm of torque (369 ft lbs). The 3rd Gen transmission has a wider total gear spread of 8.6 vs. the 7.8 of the gen 2 (more torque off-the-line and better fuel economy at highway cruise) the 3rd gen also reduces HP loss and fuel economy by up to 2.5% vs. the 2nd generation. -The Supra transmission is BETTER, but these engines are pushing the transmission at NEAR it's max rated torque WITHOUT a tune or mods. They really under-speced the transmissions vs. the engines. The X3 30D and the BMW 5 Series and X5 series upgrade to the ZF 8HP75 transmission which is rated for up to 750nm of torque (550ft lbs). A stage 1 Tune on any B58 usually gets you to 425 ft lbs and a stage 2 tune puts into past 450 ft lbs of torque -> the 8HP50/51 transmissions are going to be a weak link on these cars; the Supra ESPECIALLY as a "tuner car" should've come with the higher torque capable ZF 8HP76F transmission.

    BMW 380 HP = real life 400+ HP I don't know why a regular person even needs an M3 anymore. This will be plenty fast and powerful, and it looks respectable unlike an M3. (Having said that, I would love to get a 3 series Alpina if I could afford it.)

    US you talking $62k - $67k. Dont let the MSRP tag of $56 xi fool you. unless u don't want any options on the car, but u will still pay shipping and tax.....so if u take standard seats $0...they are pretty good, if you select leather $1200 or so cant remember now, upgrade wheels from 18'($0) to 19'($$...cant remember)...well you will need blind spot detection...that's $500 maybe....360 protection is located with the premium...so forth. So if you don't upgrade and only pick blind spot. and $995 for moving you are looking $58+k~ + tax...you still tilting to the k60s...at this point you say fuck it, what is another 3k....am buying it for almost 60 at this point. That's basically the idea.

It’s stupid fast, but the last time it was in the shop, they gave me one of these M340i’s as a loaner to drive, I was blown away. I run low to mid 3s to 60 in mine, but the M340i had a rip snorting soundtrack. Why didn’t they give the same exhaust treatment to the M550? My cars faster, but the M340i was more fun... I couldn’t stop grinning like an idiot!

    While the engine is amazing, the interior is not a 70k interior. Even with the upgraded package, there was a lot of hard plastics. Center console hard plastics right where your knee is. Dash is mostly injection molded plastic. Lower door trim is hard scratchy kind. It's more of a 50k to 55k interior.

    100%. Test drove one last week and, despite being clearly much fresher and more modern looking inside than its predecessor, the materials still underwhelm for the price point. You have to spec Merino throughout to make this car feel its worth but that stacks up the price and it doesn’t hide all its sins.

    Because there are only so many engine displacements existing in a model range (in this case two: 2 liter and 3 liter) while multiple versions need to be offered to the customer and labeled differently, which is why label to displacement correspondence cannot be maintained anymore. Hence why there can't just be a 320i and 330i as you're suggesting, instead they've extended the labels over a larger span: 318i, 320i, 330i and M340i (316i and 325i have also existed in the past).
