I just installed the same kit on my 2022 500RR-S, which had 25 hours on it when I did the install. And the install went exactly as Jared has shown, but my bike will NOT start using the kickstart lever. I can kick till I pass out, and it won't even pop. But if I use the electric start, it starts like normal! I suspected there wasn't any spark, so I grounded my spare plug against the header pipe, and sure enough, there was no spark when using the kick start lever. If I press the electric start, it does spark...but ONLY after the engine turns over a couple revolutions! Before everyone says kick harder, I promise I'm kicking it plenty hard...I'm a big guy, and I doubt anyone is gonna kick it any harder. But no matter how hard I kick it, it's not going to spin over two complete revolutions! However, it's pretty obvious from the spark plug test that that's exactly what has to happen before the computer sends spark to the plug! I've emailed Beta USA, explained all I've tried, and all I've observed, but so far they've been no help. My bike is a 2022, but it was built in July of 2021. The map has never been updated, and the closest dealer to me (2 hours away...the dealer I bought it from closed their doors) says that there have been at least a couple updates since my bike was built...so my only hope is that the newer updates might include a change to how/when spark is sent to the plug! I'm going to make an appointment to have the ECU updated as soon as I get back home from vacation. Incidentally, I asked BetaUSA if the outdated map might be a possible cause, but their email reply didn't answer that question. Their only suggestion was to make certain I got the engine just past TDC and kick it smoothly! Not much help, since I was already doing that before I ever emailed them.

Good Morning, after reading all these comments I was eager to try the kit myself. I was able to finish the suspension lowering kit this morning and rolled the bike out back and it fired on its 6th kick and I forgot to even look for TDC as it has been so long since I have kick started a 4 stroke. The video will be published and online here within an hour. Have a look and see if I am doing something different. My only suggestion is to kick SLOWER. I actually was kicking to fast at first. I learned that a mid fast kick is all that is needed. Enjoy The Ride, Jared

Thanks Jared. I just watched your update, and saw you start the 390! Though I'd already tried the slower/smoother kick (per Beta USA's suggestiong), I went out and tried it again. Nothing. Won't even pop! Touch the start button, and it fires up normally! Your comment about the headlight makes me wonder... Mine, of course, turns on with the key, because I have an RR-S. Do you think there's any chance that a difference in the electrical system between the RR and the RR-S (like I have) might be the culprit? Like I said in my comment, when you touch the electric start button, the spark plug doesn't actually spark until the engine has spun over for a bit...sounds like about two revolutions to me. But when you use the kickstarter, there's no spark at all! It seems like there's a delay that can only be coming from the ECU. I'm waiting for the closest dealer to me to schedule an appointment where I can get my ECU updated, since my bike has what I'm guessing is the original map from when it was built (7/21). I hope that makes a difference, because I can't think of anything else to try.

I'd like to know as well for the RR-S, else won't be risking the kick starter kit.

Never been able to kickstart my 480 in 5 years. Yet I could literally kick over my XR600 by hand.

I'd have an easier time pushing it up an incline and bumping then trying to kick my 480. 😂 I've kicked a ural and the compression makes all the difference

Why did you not fit the metal gears for the oil pump at the same time ?

The fuel pump will run with 8v, but that won't spin the starter. So a weak, but not dead battery, or busted starter, were the reasons I opted for the kit. But even with a fresh battery, the kick start lever won't start my 500RR-S.

Good Morning, yep you are correct. All modern 4 stroke bikes require a perfect 12v battery. We actually ended up 2nd place overall at the 24 hour race a few weeks ago because a KTM died on another team and they had to get towed out of the woods. I will say tho that there are more reasons to have a kick start kit other than just the battery. At the Texas Hard Enduro 2 years ago drew smashed a rock so hard it pinched his starter wire completely off, if he didn't have the kick start kit he would not of gotten out of the woods! Enjoy The Ride, Jared

I would think if this was my bike and had to tear it down that far for the kick starter kit I sure would have changed out those dumb plastic oil pump gears with the steel ones. Wouldn't be hardly any extra labor costs for that. Just saying.

For the amount of money these bikes cost, you got to buy a kick start kit, and beta still puts the plastic oil pump gears in, but you can buy the steel ones to replace them.. 11k all that should be included... ktm does the same shit, but now they don't have a place for a kick start..prices are a little higher than beta... just saying

The kick starter should be standard and also the steel oil pump gear like you said also a rock hard seat that you have to replaced.

Ktm are way more reliable than beta. I own both. My buddy with a 23 390 with 70 hours on it just completely destroyed the plastic gears and has had wiring, battery and overheating issues all along.

Good Morning, I'm not even sure that Honda, Kawasaki or Yamaha have a spot for a kick start. Or even the KTM/Husky/GasGas. Can you even add a kick start to those bikes? It's sweet Beta even gives you the option for the kick start kit. Enjoy The Ride, Jared
