2019 Vauxhall Astra first drive review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The revised Vauxhall Astra might not look terribly different, but it’s got rid of all the old engines, and replaced them with brand-new ones. We tried some out to see if it can keep up the fight against hatchbacks like the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf.

This Astra in Elite Nav spec is hands down the absolute best Hatchback you can buy right now. Among the standard spec is front and rear heated leather seats. These aren't even an optional extra on most of its rivals. It's very comfortable to sit in and if you get one of the punchier engines it's a lot of fun too.

The Astra is a very good looking car. Can never really fathom why it hasn't sold more. I think the answer might be in the poor and uncopperitve dealer ships.

As close as you'll get is the 1.6t petrol with 200bhp in the outgoing models. I have the Elite Nav with that engine and it really is a joy to drive. The spec on the Elite Navs is probably best money for car value in the whole Hatchback world, front and rear heated leather seats, dual zone CC, heated steering wheel, USB ports in front and rear, all round electric windows.

Those "new" engines arent exactly new. they are the widely known 1.5 blueHDI and 1.2 PureTech engines from PSA, who happens to be the new owner of Opel. i think this was worth mentioning, no? The way you presented it looked like it was new engines, developed by Opel themselves

At least the prefacelift had huge amount of faults: the suspension was with 17" rims so uncomfortable that same year Skoda Octavia felt like an air suspension. The side column switches for wipers and side blinkers felt cheap as well as door handles. The cherry on top was that you could feel the wipers through the pedals when stationary. On a 2017 model! Not mentioning the lack of noise insulation that I had never experinced before. Same year Octavia and Leon beat all those faults and feel like more expensive and better cars.

I'm going to buck the trend here. Bought a new 21 plate Astra Griffin in June last year and my excitement was quickly wiped out. Awful gear box and clutch, not particularly fuel efficient, jerky/coughing engine at start until it heats up and generally an uninspiring and bland car. I had such high hopes for it too, but the problems outweigh the good points. I've now traded it in taking advantage of the used car prices at the moment. Have only lost £900, so worth considering if you're in the same boat.

@@honestrunescaper yes it starts at more than 10 k less ,there should be a direct comparison on like for like specification as i just went on line and specced a golf up to the same standard , i can only get a 7 speed gearbox/2 litre tdi instead of the more modern 8 speed/1.6cdti on the astra so one balances out the other ,the golf has a lot less equipment as the astra the golf was £34,890 so at £6,000 less and less equipment the astra is a bargain spec for spec plus the motoring press say its an excellent car, badge snobbery strikes again .....
