    Thanks for posting this video. You presented valuable information and feedback. I am currently riding the same bike on loan while my Santa Cruz Tallboy 29 is waiting for the correct seal kit for the front fork. I would like to include the idea that you should buy the type of bike with suspension travel that suits the trails that you actually ride most of the time. This is more practical than something that fits your dream wish list but you do not often need or use. Although I have found that the 150 suspension front and rear can ride over lots of rocks and roots and descend with ease it more than I need most of the time. If I were to replace my Tallboy that has 120 front/ 110 rear ( rear shock has lock out option) I probably go for a trail bike with 140 front / 130 rear with a lock out option. The Hightower Carbon LT is just a little more squishy than I am use too riding or need most of the time. Definitely ride it first especially if you have been riding a short travel bike. I might add thatI rode a Giant Trance 2 27.5 before I switched to the Tallboy. I loved the Trance 140 / 130 Fox fork + shock. However I feel the Short travel Tallboy 29 accelerates and rolls over stuff better than the medium travel Giant that I was riding on my local trails and it better suits my riding style..

    I figure like anything it takes getting used to. I have a Surly BFD and use it for off-road and that bike is a Tank. I mean ...going from the BFD to a something lighter/smaller, it'll always be a different feel. Even when my friends and I were kids, we used to ride each other's bikes, and unless they were similar builds it always felt waaaay different --whether it was good or bad. But no matter ...bikes are like gloves and the only way to truly know what fits the best(for the rider) is to try them.

    The Tallboy 2019 XXL that I just got to replace my 2018 XL (same exact frame design) is so much more capable. The only difference is the bigger frame. Although I’m at 120 and 110 travel there is nothing in rocky Nashville this new frame doesn’t eat. Also, I find whether it’s my multiple mountain bikes or road bikes my saddle setup is exactly the same. The rest of the bike is fitted around that!

    My last bike was a 2018 YT Jeffsy with a 140mm Pike and I’m currently riding a 2018 HTLT with a fox 36 160mm fork. I do have to say that my jeffsy climbed quicker and that the front end of the HTLT tends to wander a bit on steep technical climbs. I actually am putting on a new 44mm offset fox36 with 150mm travel today to see if I can tighten up the front end a bit and reduce some of the lift from the front end during some of these steep climbs. I do notice the front tire can wash out a bit during the fast right switchbacks on my single track trails if I’m not careful. It’s not bad, but does require a bit more rider input than I was used to with the jeffsy. I still have a 2019 YT Jeffsy on order, BUT, if this fork changes the geometry enough for me then I am going to keep this bike. It pedals the flats amazingly well, it demolished downhill stuff, and everything about the bike feels absolutely rock solid. There are no weird creaking noises, no chain slap, and it’s totally silent on the ride, something that I feel like the jeffsy didn’t have exactly down perfectly So awesome bike, hoping the 150mm on the front climbs a bit better and maybe a shorter offset makes it steer a bit tighter on the short fast switchbacks.

    Ghosty - welp, I ended up canceling the YT Jeffsy order. The new 44mm offset fox 36 150mm travel changed the bike entirely. It made it far faster in the right switchback turns on my trails and somehow made it climb easier without the front end lifting In fact I’ve been beating all my old PRs I had on the jeffsy and the bike is freaking perfect. I’m gonna ride this HTLT for a couple years before trying something else

    Why would it be too much travel if you have adjustable dampening/lockout?

  • @jctrails

    @jctrails

    5 жыл бұрын

    If your local trails are like a pyramid meaning you pedal up the mtn and then bomb down then your travel does not matter as much because you can lock out your suspension. On trails like I was riding in the video you can’t do that because you’re constantly pedaling over the undulating trails. A short travel bike just works better on these kind of trails with the suspension open.

    Hey, was that a test bike? I couldn’t tell. geez- you think they put enough stickers on that thing!! Lol. Conclusion I am coming to is that I like longer travel 27.5 bikes for trails like what you just rode, and shorter travel 29ers for less gnarly trails. I just get too damn tired riding long travel 29ers in gnarly pedal trails and I hate how they wander and having to fight to get them back on line once they get off line But, I am 47 and dont get out nearly as much I would like. So people in better riding shape might feel differently. I probably also have a bias coming from bmx and 26 wheels. The long travel 29ers are so sweet on long decents though where you can really take advantage of that rolling speed and their ability to just eat gnar at speed. I just don’t have enough of that kind of riding. Great vid as usual. Ride on.

    The Hightower LT was only ever a stop gap measure for their ews team to get a bit more travel out of the hightower and this really shows. It was never the refined bike that santa cruz wanted to build. The comments above were from an interview with Nick Anderson the santa cruz engineering manager.I have ridden a friends hightower lt, it is ok on the downhill but very in efficient pedalling up hill and when you ramp the speed up on the flat. I would say it is terrible in this respect. When you see these reviews you do have to wonder how much the reviewer is being paid by santa cruz to do the review. The fact that this model was only around for such a short period before being quit would suggest even in the manufacturers eyes it was not that good.
